Week of April 15, 2012 Lessons for the Leader Think of the amazing events that occurred long ago. The stone was rolled away. The disciples and the women were confused and wondered where Jesus' body was. Jesus appeared to Mary Magdalene and she ran to tell the disciples (see John 20:1-18). Read Luke 24:13-14. Notice the first few words. According to Luke, this event took place the same day the tomb was discovered empty. Jesus had shown Himself to Mary Magdalene and now was about to show Himself again. Imagine the men's conversation. When was the last time you talked about the events of Jesus' death and resurrection with someone? Read Luke 24:15-17. Jesus suddenly appeared. Do you think the men were so engrossed in their conversation that they did not hear Jesus approach? Why did God plan for the men not to recognize Jesus? Jesus walked alongside the men and joined in their conversation. Read Luke 24:18-24. Jesus asked the men to tell about the events they discussed. The men could not believe this man did not know about the events. Still, they told Jesus what had happened. Do you remember all of the events? Can you tell the preschoolers what happened? Read Luke 24:25-27. Jesus questioned the men about believing the Scriptures. Jesus then taught the men what the Scriptures said about Him. Read Luke 24:28-35. The men asked Jesus to join them for the evening. The men shared bread together. The eyes of the men were opened and they recognized Jesus. Then Jesus disappeared. The men returned to tell the disciples they had seen Jesus. They knew Jesus was alive. Do you believe Jesus is alive? Help the children understand people told that Jesus was alive. What do these symbols mean? 1aApplication Activities Format: Follow the numbers with arrows for a 30-minute, large group plus 20-minute Application Activities format. 1 Follow all the numbers for a 45- to 60-minute large group only format. Introduction to Worship 1aGreet Each Child by Name Offering container Show children where to place their offerings. 2aPlay "I Spy" Outrageous or silly sunglasses Teacher Tip Print "Glasses" (CD) onto heavyweight paper, cut apart, assemble, and decorate. Say: "Everyone stand up. I spy a friend wearing black shoes. If you do not have on black shoes, sit down!" Give additional details about the child or adult such as "I spy a friend with black shoes and pants" or "I spy a friend with black shoes, pants, and a yellow bow." Lead the children who do not fit the new descriptions to sit down. Continue adding descriptions until only one person is standing. Say: "Aha! I spy [say child's name]!" Repeat as time permits. Worship 3aWelcome Children and Pray (2 minutes) Comment: "I'm so glad you are here. It is fun to see our friends! The men in our Bible story today were not looking for their friend, Jesus. The men knew Jesus had died on the cross and was placed in the tomb. We'll learn later what happened to these two men." 4aSing "I Saw" (DVD, 2 minutes) 5 Sing "Tell Me the Stories of Jesus" (DVD, 2 minutes) 6aPresent Offering and Pray (2 minutes) 7aSing "Jesus Is Alive" (DVD, 2 minutes) 8 Play a Whisper Game (5 minutes) Teacher Tip Enlist teachers to lead small groups in the game. State: "Let's play a whisper game. I'll whisper something into [say child's name] ear. She will whisper it to the person next to her. The next person will whisper the same thing to the child next to her. Everyone will get to be whispered to and then whisper. The last person will whisper to me what he heard. Remember to whisper." Whisper "Jesus is alive" into the first child's ear. Restate the words as needed while kids whisper. Say aloud what the last child whispers. Comment: "I whispered 'Jesus is alive.' People told that Jesus was alive. The men in our Bible story told that Jesus was alive." 9 Practice Bible Skills (5 minutes) Print "Matthew," "Mark," "Luke," "John," and "Acts" (CD). Lead kids to name the Gospels in order as you display the titles (Matthew, Mark, Luke, John). Display Acts title. State: "Acts is the next book in the New Testament after the Gospels. Acts tells us about Jesus' followers after they learned Jesus was alive. Let's say all of these books in order." Lead in saying the names Matthew through Acts. Point to the Luke title. Say: "Our Bible story is in the Book of Luke. Open your Bibles to Luke 24." Help the children as needed. 10aTell the Bible Story (7 minutes) Tape Print "Bible Story Footprints" (CD). Tape the pages of footprints around room or church, spacing them as far apart as you desire. Teacher Tips Hide footprints and invite children to hunt for them. Allow children to sequence the footprints and then tell the story. Print sets of footprints, place kids in groups, and assign adults to lead kids through the story. Say: "The disciples in our Bible story walked a long way. The men walked 14 miles in one day!" Two Men Saw Jesus Page 2 of 23

Explain: "We will walk around as a group looking for paper footprints on the floor. The footprints are numbered. We will start at 1 and walk to each set until we reach set number 4." Line kids up and walk to the first set of footprints. Read aloud the story on the footprints (#1). Ask the question. Encourage children to respond. Continue to move to each set of footprints. Two Men Saw Jesus Based on Luke 24:13-35 Two disciples walked along the road from Jerusalem to Emmaus (eh MAY uhs), a village seven miles away. The men talked about Jesus' death. While they talked, Jesus appeared and walked beside them. The men did not know He was Jesus. Jesus asked the men to tell Him what they were talking about. Ask: "What do you think the men told Jesus?" Move to next set of footprints (#2). One of the men, Cleopas (KLEE oh puhs), asked if Jesus was the only person who did not know what happened. Jesus told Cleopas to tell Him. The men told about Jesus dying and being put in the tomb three days before. The men explained that some of the women went to the tomb and it was empty. Some disciples went to the tomb and found it empty, too, but they did not see Jesus. Angels told the women that Jesus was alive. Quiz: "How do you think the two men walking with Jesus felt?" Move to next set of footprints (#3). Jesus asked the men if they did not believe what was written in the Scriptures and was supposed to happen. As Jesus walked with the men, He helped them understand what the Scriptures said about Him. When the men came near Emmaus, they invited Jesus to stay with them. Explore: "What do you think Jesus did?" Move to next set of footprints (#4). As the men sat down to eat, Jesus thanked God for the bread and gave some to the men. Suddenly the men recognized Jesus. Jesus disappeared from their sight. The two men were so excited they returned to Jerusalem. The men found the disciples and told them Jesus was alive. The two men explained how Jesus had walked with them and explained the Scriptures. Ask: "How do you think the disciples felt then?" 11aReview the Bible Story (3 minutes) Print "Teaching Picture 7 Two Men" (CD). Look at the picture together. Compare the men's shoes and clothing and the road to our shoes, clothing, and roads. Ask: "What happened in our story today?" Lead children to retell the story. Comment: "The events in our Bible story happened a long time ago, but we can still tell people about Jesus today, just like the men did then. People told that Jesus was alive." 12aUse Worship Guides (7 minutes) Worship Guides, pencils Distribute materials. Lead children to complete the activities. 13aLearn the Bible Verse (5 minutes) Paper, marker Print Acts 11:20 from your preferred translation. Teacher Tip Print "Acts 11:20 Paraphrase" (CD). Display and read aloud the verse. Ask: "What did the men in our Bible story do after they saw Jesus?" Encourage responses. Lead children to say the verse while standing up on every other word. 14 Make Application (3 minutes) Comment: "We know many stories about Jesus. What can we tell our friends about Jesus?" Invite responses (God's Son, born in Bethlehem, performed miracles, loves us, helped people, chose disciples, died on the cross, is alive, etc.). Direct: "Repeat after me. 'People told' [echo]. 'Jesus was alive' [echo]." Repeat a few times. Conclude: "People told that Jesus was alive. We can tell people Jesus is alive. Jesus is alive!" 15aGo to Application Activities or Wrap-Up Week of April 15, 2012 Page 3 of 23

Application Activities Select from the following choices. Each choice is designed for 20 minutes of small group time. Shaving cream, muffin pans, painting smocks, glue, children's scissors, food color, paintbrushes, spoons, heavyweight paper Print page 1 of "Great News" on heavyweight paper (1 per child). Print page 2 of "Great News" (1 set of letters per child). Print "Allergy Alert" (CD), list shaving cream, and post. Squirt shaving cream into the cups of a muffin pan. Add 1 2 drops of food color to each cup and mix. Teacher Tips Use old T-shirts for painting smocks. Cut apart letters before the session. Decorative or construction paper, glue sticks, children's scissors, embellishments (stickers, stick-on numbers, sequins, buttons, etc.) Print "Cell Phones" (CD). Print or copy 1 per child. Teacher Tip Provide old cell phones for children to use and explore. Remember to remove the batteries to prevent accidental calls. Worship Through Arts and Crafts Paint Headlines Say: "In our Bible story, the men told people about Jesus. People told that Jesus was alive. In Bible times, the only way to share good news was to say the words or to write letters. What things do we use today to tell people news? (telephone, e-mail, letters, newspapers, TV news, magazines, books) Let's paint some good news." Give each child a "Great News" page, a set of letters, glue, and scissors. Instruct: "First, we'll cut apart our letters and glue them in the boxes on our newspaper. Glue the letters you cut apart to the matching small letters in the boxes." Assist children with cutting and gluing. Help children put on smocks. State: "Now, let's paint our 'Great News' papers. Dip your paintbrushes into the shaving cream and paint your newspapers." Encourage children to paint their headlines [point]. Lead children to clean the area, wash hands, and remove smocks. Say: "You did a good job making your newspaper. A newspaper is one way to tell people great news. The men in our Bible story told people that Jesus was alive. Show your pictures to someone today and tell them that Jesus is alive." Pray. Worship Through Dramatic Play Make Cell Phones Say: "We learned the men told people about Jesus. We can know people told that Jesus was alive. Let's make play cell phones. We can practice using our cell phones to tell people that Jesus is alive." Invite each child to choose a phone to make. Instruct: "Lay your phone on the paper and trace around it. Cut out the phone and glue the paper to the back. Color the front of your phone and add decorations." Assist with adding embellishments. Encourage children to pretend to use their cell phones to call people and tell them that Jesus is alive. Lead children to clean the area. State: "We learned people told that Jesus was alive. Use your phones to tell people that Jesus is alive." Pray. Week of April 15, 2012 Page 5 of 23

Scissors, construction paper, tape Print page 2 of "Great News" (CD) and cut apart letters. Tape individual letters to separate construction papers. Lay papers on floor in a grid (6 rows of 4 papers or 8 rows of 3 papers) with letters in random order. Print Jesus, is, and alive on separate papers. Teacher Tip Print multiple sets of letters (p. 2) and use. Magnifying glasses, telescope, binoculars, kaleidoscope, word magnifiers, sunglasses, colored tape, stick-on gems, heavyweight paper, neon markers, poster board, children's scissors Create eye charts using letters or shapes on poster board. Tape a line on the floor to show children where to stand in front of the eye chart. Print "Glasses" (CD) on heavyweight paper. Print 1 copy per child. Arm Attachments Tape 1 / 3 of chenille stem across the back of the top rim of the glasses and along one arm. Repeat for the other side. Arms can be folded. Tape arms to glasses. Worship Through Games Step and Spell Say: "We learned people told that Jesus was alive. We can tell people Jesus is alive. I'll choose five of you to stand on the letters I display only one person per letter. If I show a J, only one person can stand on a J. The four other players must stand on different letters." Select five children to play. Display Jesus paper. Instruct: "Go stand on these letters: J, e, s, u, s." Help children stand on the appropriate letters. Say: "This spells Jesus. You may sit down. I need two volunteers." Display is paper and let volunteers stand on these letters. Repeat process with the word alive. Invite larger groups and display Jesus and is papers. Finish by showing all three words at once. Call out random letters and allow children to stand on the letters. Challenge groups of children (two, five, or seven in a group) to hold hands and stand on the letters. Hands must be held at all times. Lead children to pick up the letters. Ask: "What happened in our Bible story? (Jesus walked with two men.) What did the men do when they realized they had walked with Jesus? (They told people Jesus was alive.) We learned people told that Jesus was alive." Pray. Worship Through Exploration and Discovery Explore Items to Help Us See State: "In our Bible story, we learned Jesus walked with two men, but they did not know He was Jesus at first. The men could see the man walking with them, but they did not know who He really was until later. They knew He was Jesus when they ate together. The men told people that Jesus was alive. Let's look at things that help us see." Name the items you gathered. Say: "We can take turns playing with the items. We can also make our own paper glasses. Here are the supplies. Cut out and decorate the glasses. Teachers will help you attach the arms." Allow children to explore the items and make the glasses. Lead children to clean the area. Comment: "We've had fun using the items to see and making our glasses. The men walking on the road saw and talked to a man. Later in the day the men saw or knew the man was Jesus. The men told people that Jesus was alive." Pray. Worship KidStyle Preschool Edition Leader Guide 2011 LifeWay Christian Resources of the Southern Baptist Convention. OK to copy. Page 6 of 23
