Pilgrim s testimonies Holy Land Just a word of thanks to all at Marian for a wonderful week in the Holy Land. Our guide was excellent and we felt very safe in his hands. For me it was the trip of a lifetime and my fellow pilgrims were such a lovely bunch of people - I know a lot of us will remain friends for life. Mary - October 2016 Shrines of Italy We have just returned from our wonderful trip to San Giovanni! Everything went like clockwork. It was a wonderful spiritual experience. Our Spiritual Director was truly inspirational and our guide was highly organised, supportive and helpful and the hotel was, as always, perfect. Alphonsus & Deirdre - September 2015 Medjugorje I returned yesterday, from what was a most enjoyable and thoroughly rewarding first visit to Medjugorje. The owner and staff in our house couldn t have done more for me. Really, really lovely people. The schedule of events and times were very well balanced and just right, to allow adequate free time. David Parkes and his team were so professional, good humoured and helpful, and our guide was absolutely wonderful, with perfect English and her impeccable knowledge and love of the whole Medjugorje story added immensely to the week. Thanks a million to all at Marian Pilgrimages. Seamus - September 2015 Lourdes I would just like to thank your organisation for the wonderful Pilgrimage. My sister in law and I have just returned from Lourdes. Eamonn was a great leader, everything was so organised and everything ran so smoothly. He was so informative and helpful. Fr John Brown was a lovely priest, his Masses and sermons were so spiritual, it was a joy to be there at them. We both enjoyed the experience, thank you again for organising a great Pilgrimage. Catherine & Betty - June 2016

Introduction Marian Pilgrimages is an Irish owned family run business with offices based in Dublin, London and Boston. The company was founded in 1991 by the late Tom Glynn while visiting The Marian Shrine of Medjugorje with his wife and four sons. Tom had been extensively involved in Sun Holidays for over 30 years previous, but recognised the importance of religious travel to the Irish and enlisted the help of his good friend and experienced colleague, Tom Field, to help in the set up of the new company. The next few years were extremely tough, as the Croatian War of independence made travelling to Medjugorje out of the question for many Irish pilgrims. However, through the loyalty and dedication of our pilgrims, the company continued to organise small group pilgrimages to the Marian Shrine. Eventually, in 1995 the war ended and all the hard work, perseverance and devotion accumulated with Marian Pilgrimages becoming the biggest tour operator to Medjugorje in the world, coordinating over 15,000 pilgrims each year from five different countries to this special site. Over the years Tom s sons joined, and the family business grew to where it is today, bringing tens of thousands of pilgrims to shrines all over Europe, the Middle East and North America. With a network of offices in 8 countries and over 50 members of our own staff on the ground, Marian Pilgrimages are in a unique position to ensure that every aspect of your pilgrimage is looked after. We have a commitment to providing successful pilgrimages and a belief in the messages and meaning of the Shrines, Marian Pilgrimages offers not only a spiritual pilgrimage but an extensively professional programme. At Marian Pilgrimages we believe that a pilgrimage should help deepen our focus, renew our spirit of love, forgiveness and peace and overall replenish our faith. A pilgrimage is a deeply individual experience and we believe that we provide the spiritual environment accompanied with like-minded pilgrims and a structured programme to make sure that you receive the most out of your pilgrimage. Pilgrims, either as part of a group or travelling by themselves will see that this belief has continued not only into our extensive programme but also into our professional guides and services, both on the ground and in our offices. We pride ourselves on the quality of our guides, who will bring each step of your journey to life with their intimate knowledge of the local culture and history. By travelling with Marian Pilgrimages you will benefit by being part of the Family that is Marian Pilgrimages. Receiving complete support both here in Ireland and on the ground, we will endeavour to ensure your pilgrimage is a rewarding and fruitful experience. We look forward to the opportunity of assisting you as you embark on your pilgrimage. Marian Pilgrimages 4

Jerusalem & Bethlehem Jerusalem The Via Dolorosa is known as the road that Jesus carried the Cross to Calvary. It starts were Jesus was tried, convicted and condemned to be crucified. The 14 Stations of the Cross are based on events that occurred while Jesus was carrying the Cross to Calvary. We will walk the Via Dolorosa to the site where He was crucified on the Hill of Golgotha. Situated here stands the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Known as the holiest place in the Christian world, the church stands on the site where Jesus was crucified and the tomb in which He was buried. The room of the Last Supper is located above the Tomb of David and Mount Zion. It is believed to be the room where Jesus and His Disciples shared His last supper the night before His capture. Garden of Gethsemane Located next to the Church of All Nations lies the Garden of Gethsemane. According to Christian 6 tradition it is where Jesus spent His last night. After the Last Supper, Jesus and His disciples left Jerusalem and travelled here where they prayed until the guards, led by Judas, came to arrest Jesus. Bethlehem 5 miles from Jerusalem lies the town of Bethlehem. One of the oldest surviving churches in Bethlehem is the Church of the Nativity. Built over a grotto, it is believed to be the site where the Virgin Mary gave birth to Jesus. Located 2km from Bethlehem, lies the Shepherds Fields. Traditionally it is said that the Angels of the Lord visited the shepherds in these fields to inform them of Baby Jesus birth.

Shrines of Italy Italy The beating heart of the Catholic faith As the cradle of Catholicism, Italy is a land of pilgrimage, brimming with places of devotion. Millions of pilgrims each year visit the quaint town of San Giovanni Rotondo made famous by Padre Pio, the medieval town of Assisi - the birthplace of both St. Francis and St. Clare and the town of Loreto - home to the Basilica of the Holy House of Nazareth, one of the most important pilgrimage sites for centuries. The ultimate destination is undoubtedly Rome, the capital of Christianity. With a history steeped in the Catholic faith combined with a wealth of art and some breathtaking scenery, your pilgrimage to Italy can be a life-changing event. Rome Rome, the Eternal City, has a history and an appeal like no other city in the world. Ancient structures such as the Coliseum, Roman Forum and Pantheon recall Rome s time as the fearsome hub of the Roman Empire, while the catacombs and impressive churches hark back to the early days of Christianity. Since the arrival of Christians, Rome s abundance of ancient temples, churches and shrines make it one of the best cities to explore the holy places of a variety of religious traditions. Being the cradle of the Catholic Church, Rome has a large number of valuable, sacred places of worship. St. Peter s Basilica, one of the most sacred places 12 in Christendom contains a unique collection of artistic and architectural masterpieces. Erected over the tomb of St. Peter the Apostle, it is the greatest of the city s monumental basilicas, the largest religious building in the world and seat of the Pope, the Vicar of Christ. Loreto The most treasured and venerated Shrine of our Lady throughout the world is that of the Holy House of Nazareth in the Basilica in Loreto. And rightly so, for according to tradition, the Holy House of Nazareth is the same walled chamber that existed in Nazareth where the Blessed

2018 marks the 100 th Anniversary of the Stigmata & 50 th Anniversary of the death of St. Pio of Pietrelcina. Described by St. John Paul II as a living image of Christ suffering. 50 years since his death, the faithful arriving in San Giovanni Rotondo is testament of the life and works of this great saint of our time, a devotion that continues to flourish. Virgin Mary was born, brought up and received the gift of the Annunciation. Tradition recounts that the house was miraculously transported by angels to Teresatto, then to Recanati before settling in the town of Loreto. Lanciano The medieval town of Lanciano is the site of the first Eucharistic Miracle of the Catholic church. The miracle dates back to the 8 th century and took place in the Church of St. Legontian as a Basilian monk was struggling with his faith, doubting the real presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. At the two-fold consecration the bread turned into real flesh and the wine into real blood, restoring the monk s faith. Since 1713 the Host-Flesh has been preserved in an artistic silver Ostensorium and is now kept on display for veneration in the Church of San Francesco in Lanciano. Assisi The town famous as the birthplace of the Franciscan Order continues to attract pilgrims who come to pray at the tombs of St. Francis and St. Clare. In addition to its fine basilicas boasting breath-taking works of art and the picturesque s c e n e r y surrounding the medieval town, one can understand why Assisi is often referred to as the Green Heart of Italy and why so many pilgrims make the journey from the world over. Monte Sant Angelo Located on the southern slopes of Monte Gargano the town of Monte Sant Angelo is home to the Sanctuary of St. Michael the Archangel where according to legend, St. Michael appeared in 490, 492, 493 and 1656. It has been the site of many famous pilgrimages, which started from Mont Saint-Michel with many popes and saints making the pilgrimage over the centuries. www.marian.ie - tel (01) 878 8159 13

San Giovanni Rotondo Located in the heel of Italy, the town of San Giovanni Rotondo was made famous by the humble friar Padre Pio of Pietrelcina. The gift of the stigmata which he received 100 years ago transformed San Giovanni Rotondo from a remote town to a place of pilgrimage which attracts millions of pilgrims each year who come to pray at the tomb of the saint. In addition to the 100th anniversary of the stigmata we will also commemorate the 50th anniversary of the death of this great saint of our time, making 2018 a very special year for the faithful. The 100 th Anniversary of the Stigmata In this corner, on this barren hill the Lord planted a flower in which the perfume has spread throughout the church and throughout the world. The barren hill was the location of the once remote friary at San Giovanni Rotondo. The Lord chose Padre Pio, the humble capuchin friar, so He could reveal all His Graces, granting him many gifts; the most visible one was that of the stigmata. The treasures of graces which God gave Padre Pio used to serve the many men and women who flocked abundantly to him and produced an immense multitude of spiritual sons and daughters that led to the birth of the prayer groups throughout the world. The 50 th Anniversary of the Death of St. Pio On the day of the 22 nd of September 1968 Padre Pio celebrated Mass a final gift to his prayer groups who had assembled in San Giovanni Rotondo from all parts of the world for the 50 th anniversary of the stigmata. As the day ended the humble friar raised his hand, as always, to bless the crowd. As the light went out the crowd dispersed. It seemed a night like any other but instead was the last night of the life of the humble friar. At 2.30 am on the morning of the 23 rd of September, shortly after renewing his vows and receiving the sacrament of the sick Padre Pio gave up his soul and flew peacefully to Heaven, with his rosary beads in his hand, with the words Jesus and Mary on his lips, the signs 16

shrines of italy of the stigmata no longer visible. His life on earth was over; his earthly sufferings endured had ended. One of the many legacies of Padre Pio were the prayer groups which have now spread throughout the world. The growing number of prayer groups and the increasing number of faithful arriving in San Giovanni Rotondo is proof that the story of Padre Pio continues. Medjugorje Our Lady s mission is one of peace and love Since 1981, in a small village in Bosnia-Herzegovina named Medjugorje, the Blessed Virgin Mary has been appearing and giving messages to the world. In her own words she tells us, "I have come to tell the world that God exists. He is the fullness of life, and to enjoy this fullness and peace, you must return to God". The following is an account of the beginning of the Apparitions; On the 24 th June 1981, on the hill known as Podbrdo (Apparition Hill) six children, Ivanka Ivankovic, Mirjana Dragicevic, Vicka Ivankovic, Ivan Dragicevic, Ivan Ivankovic and Milka Pavlovic saw a beautiful young woman carrying a little child in her arms. They were frightened at what they saw and did not come closer, even though the woman beckoned them closer. They knew this woman was Our Lady. The following day, the 25 th of June 1981, the children went to the same place where Our Lady had appeared the previous day in hope of seeing her again. However, the group of children had changed somewhat; Ivan Ivankovic and Milka Pavlovic were replaced by two others, Marija Pavlovic and Jakov Colo. With the flash of a light, the six children looked up and saw Our Lady, this time without the child. When they reached her, they fell to their knees and began to pray with Our Lady. Before Our Lady left the children, she said, "God be with you my angels!" There has been only 5 days where no apparitions occurred. Medjugorje has been a place of peace, hope and inspiration for so many. The Word of God is alive in Medjugorje as well as conversion. Fatima Our Lady was brighter than the sun shedding rays of light Fatima, a world famous Marian shrine located in Portugal, saw the beginning of apparitions to Francisco, Jacinta and Lucia in 1917. Our Lady s appearance was preceded by an angel, who appeared to the three children a number of times in 1916. The Blessed Virgin appeared on the 13 th day of every month between May and October at Cova de Iria. She delivered messages from God, the overriding message was for all mankind to return to God and to make reparation for their sins. She also revealed three secrets to the children and stressed the importance of praying the Rosary in each of her apparitions. In her June appearance, Our Lady told Lucia that she would take Francisco and Jacinta to Heaven soon but that Lucia was to stay on earth to make Our Lady better known and loved. The people of Fatima, local authorities and even some of their families did not believe that such apparitions were taking place. On the 13 th August, on their way to Cova de Iria, the children were captured by the local authorities and held in jail. The local authorities demanded that they reveal the secrets. However, even though they were interrogated and threatened with death, the children refused to disclose any information. That month Our Lady appeared to the children at Valinhos on the 19 th, after they returned from prison. In October at the last apparition, Our Lady said she was the Lady of the Rosary and a chapel was to be built in her honour. As promised to the 3 children in July and September the miracle of the sun took place. As Our Lady was about to leave, the sun began whirling in the sky and seemed to plunge towards the ground. Thousands of spectators, who were present during the apparition, suddenly became terrified and fell to their knees in prayer. It was reported that numerous healings took place during this time. Today Fatima is a worldwide place of pilgrimage, thousands of people flock here every year to pray to Our Lady and Our Lord. 22

2017 was an immense year for Fatima, those who travelled to celebrate its 100 th Year Anniversary witnessed a truly special event and left with a renewed love for all that Fatima has to offer. Lourdes What I have to say to you does not have to be written down 160 th Anniversary of the Lourdes Apparitions On the 11 th of February 1858, Bernadette Soubirous witnessed a beautiful apparition in a small village in France known as Lourdes. While gathering wood by the Grotto, Bernadette first saw a vision of Our Lady surrounded by brilliant light. Too frightened to approach her, Bernadette prayed the Rosary while Our Lady looked on in quiet approval. Our Lady then disappeared. It was not until her third visit to the Grotto that she spoke. She asked Bernadette to come to the Grotto for fifteen days. Bernadette did as requested and listened to the messages Our Lady delivered from God. In these messages He asks His children to pray for sinners and repent. During the apparitions Our Lady gave Bernadette a mission; She requested that Bernadette tell the priests to build a chapel and come in procession to Lourdes. During the 9 th apparition, the discovery of the Miraculous spring in the Grotto was made by Bernadette. Its waters are said to have healing powers and many miraculous healings to this day are attributed to it. Bernadette was scrutinised and questioned by hundreds of people on a daily basis. Cure Peyramale, the local pastor, accused Bernadette of lying about the apparitions and demanded that she ask Our Lady to identify herself. On the feast of the Annunciation, Our Lady declared to Bernadette I am the Immaculate Conception. It was then that people ceased accusing Bernadette of lies. The apparitions lasted until July 1858. Camino de Santiago Be overwhelmed by the joy and spirit of adventure In Santiago we follow the journey where St. James remains were carried by boat from Jerusalem to northern Spain. Known in English as The Way of St. James, the Camino de Santiago de Compostela is a collection of old pilgrimage routes where you will witness the finest examples of architecture in all of Europe. The final destination is Santiago de Compostela, located in the north west of Spain. The Road to Santiago is a very famous and popular pilgrimage walk across northern Spain, to visit the cathedral and the tomb of the Apostle James the Elder. Heading into north-western Spain, paved roads, stony pathways, wooded trails and cobbled streets all seem to lead to the medieval city of Santiago de Compostela. It has been a coveted destination for travellers from many walks of life and many levels of European society since the ninth century. Millions of people have walked, ridden donkeys and horses, or been carried to this most famous Christian pilgrimage site, after Jerusalem and Rome, often taking months or even years to reach their goal. Please see below for a description of some of the towns and villages we visit along our way. For specific dates, routes and prices have a look at the price grid on page 37 and for comprehensive itineraries for each date please contact our office in Dublin, or log on to www.marian.ie/camino. Camino de Santiago Destinations Santo Domingo In the 15 th century a German family were making the journey to Santiago. They stopped at Santo Domingo de la Calzada to rest. While there, the innkeepers daughter fell in love with the teenage son, Hugonell, however, he rejected her. As revenge, the girl framed him for theft. Once the authorities found out he was sentenced to death. Saddened, his parents continued to 30 Santiago to pray and on return they went to visit his body. However, Hugonell spoke to them and told them he was saved by St. Dominic. Elated his parents went to notify the Mayor who was enjoying his dinner. The Mayor dismissed the story and claimed that their son was as alive as the two birds on his plate. Immediately the rooster and the hen spread their wings and jumped from his plate.

Our trips on the Camino de Santiago have become extremely popular over the last few years with the Irish market. One reason for this is the service we provide is second to none. O Cebreiro Around the year 1300 a weary Benedictine priest was celebrating Mass on a cold Winter s Day. A local farmer was the only villager who attended the Mass due to the snowstorm and he arrived just as the priest was consecrating the Host. The priest had little faith that the presence of Christ was present in the Most Holy Sacrament. He ridiculed the farmer for making the journey in bad weather for a non existent miracle. Almost immediately the Host changed to Flesh and the wine changed to Blood. Today we will see the Church of the Eucharistic Miracle and also the old thatched pallozzos in O Cebreiro. Lavacolla The small village of Lavacolla sees thousands of pilgrims pass by on the way to Santiago every year. In ancient times pilgrims stopped at the stream that flowed through the village for the traditional washing before they entered Santiago. We will take part in the washing in the stream before continuing to our goal. Burgos The magnificent Cathedral of Burgos is famous for it s vast size and Gothic architecture. Built in 1221 the Cathedral is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. It was declared a world heritage site by UNESCO in 1984 and houses an impressive 19 chapels. We will see the tomb of El Cid, a Spanish national hero, the 16th century Golden staircase and the flexible crucifix. Santiago For more than 1000 years pilgrims have been making the journey to visit the Cathedral of St. James. It was built in his honour on the site where his remains were found. Legend has it that when St. James remains were being transported to Spain, the boat sank and his body was lost at sea. However, when his remains washed up on the coast they were found to be in perfect condition and covered in scallops. One of the most recognised symbols of the Camino today is the scallop. The spectacular swinging of the Botafumeiro takes place in the Cathedral of St. James. In ancient times, this was used to purify the air when crowds of pilgrims arrived in Santiago after their long journey.
