Interweaving the Threads of Practice Welcome This year B. K. S. Iyengar will celebrate his 95th birthday. He has spent his life exploring, corroborating and illuminating the Yoga Sutra s, Patanjali s treatise on Classical Yoga. He himself describes his system as Patanjala Yoga. Sutra means thread! Over these four days we will gather together many of the threads of technique and meaning in Iyengar s teaching on asana and pranayama that contribute so exceptionally to the vast tapestry of Yoga. Iyengar Yoga Association of Canada Participation in the Conference To attend the full and long weekend conference you must have at least 6 months experience with a certified Iyengar yoga teacher. Special Teacher Training Opportunity IYAC/ACYI will be presenting a dynamic beginners class to students new to Iyengar yoga. Conference registrants are encouraged to attend the class, space permitting, without charge. A Q & A session will follow for Iyengar yoga teachers or teachers in training who are attended the class - as students/helpers. Please see page 8 for the conference schedule. Working with a specific condition All students are expected to participate actively and independently in the asana classes. Students working with restrictions will be expected to know how to modify appropriately for their needs and be able to take those alternative asanas when needed. This conference is about yoga, but also about community. We encourage you to bring information about any Iyengar classes, workshops or events & to leave it on display on the Community table. Your Teachers Ann Kilbertus Ann has been a student in the Iyengar Tradition since 1984. She began her studies in Victoria and continues to study with Shirley Daventry French. Ann has been teaching since 1988. Her first trip to Pune, India was in 1992 and she returns regularly to study with B.K.S. Iyengar and his family. Her training and practice as an occupational therapist provides a valuable contribution to further understanding of this work. Ann has served locally for many years in the training of teachers and nationally on the Iyengar Association of Canada s Professional Development Committee. She shares her understanding of this vast body of work with joy and with seriousness of purpose. Certification: Intermediate Senior II Marlene Miller Louie Ettling In the eighties Louie came into contact with Iyengar yoga in a community centre class with Wende Davis. Since then she has studied with the Iyengar family in Pune and in North America on a regular basis. Louie is the Director of The Yoga Space, an active Iyengar yoga studio in Vancouver, BC. She serves on IYAC s professional development Marlene became a student of Iyengar Yoga in 1975 and has taught since 1979. She studies regularly with Shirley Daventry French and other Canadian and international senior teachers. Marlene s commitment has taken her to India to study and practice under the guidance of Yogacharya B.K.S. Iyengar, Geeta and Prashant Iyengar. Marlene is active in the Iyengar yoga community of the Victoria area and on the Peninsula, a training teacher, and an involved member on the Professional Development Committee of IYAC/ACYI. Certification: Intermediate Senior II committee as a trainer of teachers and an assessor. She considers herself an ongoing practitioner of yoga in the first place, both on the mat and in daily life. Your Teachers cont. Leslie Hogya Leslie has traveled to India many times, most recently in Dec 2010. Leslie has also studied with Guruji and Geeta in conferences when they were visiting British Columbia, Colorado, Las Vegas, Portland, Toronto and more. Leslie does teacher training in Victoria and various out reach communities. She serves as a moderator and assessor for the national Association of Canadian teachers. Internationally Leslie has had the opportunity to teach in the U.S, Mexico, Hong Kong and in Thailand. Certification: Intermediate Senior I Teddy Hyndman Teddy began studying yoga in India in 1969, did Zen training in Japan for three years and continues her yoga practice and study in Edmonton, Alberta. As well as regular classes in the community and at the University, she teaches those who have multiple sclerosis. Teddy was the president of the Yoga Association of Alberta and is now a training teacher for the YAA and for the Edmonton Iyengar teacher training programs. Certification: Intermediate Senior I Judith Mirus Judy teaches in Edmonton. She s been fortunate to study regularly with the Iyengars in classes and intensives in Pune and Canada, the first time in Edmonton in 1990. Her first teacher was Liz McLeod. Besides regular classes, she also teaches special needs programs. These include classes dedicated to students with breast cancer and chronic lung disease. She trains teachers and is an assessor. Along with just practicing, she enjoys reading Patanjali s Sutras and learning with her senior colleagues. Certification: Intermediate Senior I
Your Teachers cont. Vicky Catchpole Since 1984 Vicky has been a student and teacher of Iyengar Yoga. She has been inspired on her yogic path by her study with Geeta and B.K.S. Iyengar as well as inspirations from teacher and friend, Maureen Carruthers. She teaches students and trains teachers at The Yoga Studio in Courtenay. Vicky shares her knowledge of the discipline of yoga to impart the benefits of confidence, clarity, courage, calmness and commitment both on and off the mat. Certification: Intermediate Junior III Ty Chandler Ty has been studying Yoga since the late 80 s. She studies weekly with Shirley Daventry French and has taken workshops with many senior teachers. She continues her training by making trips to Pune to study with the Iyengars and in 2013 will make her 8th trip to Blacons France to study with Faèq Biria. In 2012 Ty became an IYAC assessor at the Introductory 2 level. To further the practice of Bhakti, Ty plays in a local kirtan group Bhavantu Sound and goes to Seattle annually for darshan with Ammachi. Ty is grateful for the inspiration she receives from students, peers, and her teachers. It is her hope to inspire confidence and encourage concentration on the work at hand. Certification: Intermediate Junior III Barbara Young Barbara is an energetic Iyengar yoga student and teacher, and has studied many times with the Iyengar family in India and North America. She s founder of Pathway Yoga in Ottawa. She is a member of Friends of Jagruti, which raises funds to support programs offered by a remarkable grassroots women s organization in a sprawling Pune slum community. She has long volunteered with the Iyengar Yoga Association of Canada, as well as with Freeing the Human Spirit, teaching yoga to women prisoners. Certification: Intermediate Junior III
