Dioscorides sits wrighting in a codex on his lap. In front of Dioscorides is an artist, seated at a lower level, painting an illustration of the mandrake root held by Epinoia.

ANICIA JULIANA 462-527 Imperial Princess in Constantinopel

The oldest dedication miniature in existence. Anicia Juliana in the middle Magnanimity with gold coins and Prudence with a codex. «Gratitude of the Arts» with the feets. She and a putto have the dedication copy. In outer spandels putti working as masons and carpenters.

THE CHURCH OF ST. POLYEUCTUS The church was built 512-13 by Anacia Juliana. It was the largest church of Constantionpel before the construction of the Hagia Sophia. The site of the church was rediscovered during excavations in the 1960s.

The building survived until the 11th century, after which it fell into decay, while several architectural elements were removed and reused in Constantinople and other cities. The sculptures have been removed to the Istanbul Archaeological Museum.
