Jesus Lives Today Bible Story Matthew 28:16-20; John 21:1-14; Acts 1:3-11 Teacher Challenge Before Jesus went to heaven, He assured His friends that He would not leave them alone. He would send the Holy Spirit to live in them. That is a special gift for those who believe. But even those who are not living for Him receive His benefits and blessings, for all things are created and sustained by Him. In fact, life is not possible without the presence of God. How have you experienced God s presence with you in the past? What circumstances in your life today cause you to thank God for His loving presence? Jesus promised that He would never leave you alone. He is always with you. You can move forward confidently through life, knowing that He cares for you in every situation. He is your guide as you lead young children and others to follow Him, too. Lean on Him He created you and will sustain you. Teacher s Planning 1. Choose which centers you will provide and the order in which children will participate in them. For tips on schedule planning, see page 9. 2. Plan who will lead each center, making sure to have one adult for approximately every six children. For staffing tips and ideas, see page 12. 2011 Gospel Light. Permission to photocopy granted to original purchaser only. Discovering God s Love Leader s Guide 265

Play to Learn Active Game Center: Fish Toss Bible, several pairs of old light-colored socks, yarn, scissors, marker, box; optional small wading pool. Prepare Roll each pair of socks together and tuck socks inside one cuff. Tie cuff with a length of yarn to form a tail, and draw on socks to make them look like a fish (see sketch). 1. Place box in the middle of the playing area. (Optional: Use wading pool instead of box.) 2. Children stand near container and take turns tossing sock fish into it. Talk About In our Bible story, Jesus helped His friends catch lots of fish. Jesus friends gathered their fish in nets. Let s play a game to throw fish into a box. The Bible tells us, Jesus said, I am with you always. Jesus is with us wherever we go! Luca, where are some places you have gone? Jesus was with you there! I m glad that Jesus is alive and always with us. Pray briefly, Dear Jesus, thank You for always being with us. For Younger Children Provide additional sock fish or beanbags so that children do not have to wait for a turn. For Older Children Challenge children to stand further away from the box each round. 266 2011 Gospel Light. Permission to photocopy granted to original purchaser only. Play to Learn Art Center: Cloudscape Bible, construction paper (white, black, gray and blue), scissors, cotton balls, glue, tape or stapler, string. 1. Children select a color of paper and cut out a cloud shape. Demonstrate to children how to pull apart and glue cotton balls to cloud shapes. 2. Tape or staple strings to clouds and hang them from the ceiling. Talk About In today s Bible story, Jesus rose up into the sky. Jesus rose right up into the clouds! Let s make some clouds. Before Jesus went back to heaven, He told His friends that He would always care for them. Jesus cares for us, too. Cory, where are some of the places you like to go? Jesus is with you when you go to the mall. Brianne, where do you like to go with your babysitter? The library is a fun place. Jesus is with us at the library! The Bible tells us, Jesus said, I am with you always. I m glad to know Jesus is alive and always with me! Even though we can t see Jesus, we know He is with us. Pray briefly, Thank You, Jesus, for being with us wherever we go. For Younger Children Cut out cloud shapes before class. For Older Children To increase the challenge of cutting with scissors, invite children to first draw a cloud outline on their papers (draw lines for children if needed) and try cutting on those lines to make cloud shapes. 2011 Gospel Light. Play to Learn Block Center: Train of Blocks Bible, blocks. 1. Children build cars of a train, making each car wide enough to sit inside. 2. When pretend train is finished, children take seats and pretend to ride the train on an imaginary journey. Talk About In our story today, Jesus promised to always be with His friends. Jesus is always with us, too! Let s build a train with our blocks and pretend to go on a trip. Yolanda, where would you like to go on our trip? When you go to your grandmother s house, Jesus is with you! Alex, did your family ever go on vacation? Where did you go? Did you know that wherever we go, Jesus is with us, always caring for us? He is! The Bible tells us, Jesus said, I am with you always. I m glad Jesus loves us! Pray briefly, Thank You, Jesus, for always being with us. We love You. For Younger Children On the floor, use masking tape to outline a train. Children place blocks on masking tape for train. (Note: Remove masking tape immediately after activity.) For Older Children Children build train tracks by placing narrow strips of cardboard or brown construction paper in parallel lines in front of the block train. The train tracks can be straight, curved or make a large circle in the activity area. 268 2011 Gospel Light. Permission to photocopy granted to original purchaser only. Bible, shallow baking dish, water, craft foam in a variety of colors, scissors, scoops (slotted or serving spoons, strainers, small nets, etc.), several towels; optional toy plastic fish. Prepare Pour water into baking dish. Cut craft foam into fish shapes, making several fish of each color, shape and size. Place fish shapes in baking dish. (Optional: Place toy plastic fish in baking dish.) (Note: If you have a large class, you may wish to prepare more than one baking dish with water and fish shapes.) Place baking dish on a towel. 1. Children use scoops to take fish out of the water and count as each fish is caught. Children may also sort fish by size, color and shape. 2. Use towels to clean up spills. Talk About In today s Bible story, Jesus friends were fishing. Jesus helped His friends catch many fish. Let s fish some things out of water! Some objects float on water and some sink. Hailey, what is something that floats? Cade, what is something that sinks? The Bible tells us, Jesus said, I am with you always. I m glad Jesus is alive! Jesus is always with us. For Younger Children Instead of using scoops, children use their hands to take out fish. Make sure children wearing long sleeves roll up their sleeves before putting hands in the water. For Older Children Children make sieves by using pencils to carefully poke holes in the bottoms of paper or Styrofoam cups. Children then use sieves to fish out objects. 2011 Gospel Light. Their nets were so full of fish the friends could barely lift them up from the water! That same day Jesus cooked some breakfast for His friends. Then the day came when it was time for Jesus to go back to heaven. He walked with His friends out in the country. Jesus said to His friends, Remember that I am with you always. I will watch over you and take care of you. Jesus wanted them to know that even though they wouldn t see Jesus with their eyes, He was still with them. Jesus friends listened quietly. After I am gone, Jesus said, go and tell people everywhere that I love them. Then Jesus rose up off the ground! Jesus friends must have been surprised! Jesus went up and up and UP, until He was in the clouds, and then His friends couldn t see Him anymore. They stood there, looking up. Suddenly, there were two angels standing beside the friends. The angels said, Why are you standing here looking into the sky? Jesus has gone to heaven! Jesus will come back again someday. Jesus friends were very glad! Now they knew Jesus was going to come back, just as He had promised. And they were glad because Jesus had promised to always be with them. And He will always be with us, too! 270 2011 Gospel Light.
