September 24, 2017 Twenty-Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time ST. GABRIEL THE ARCHANGEL CATHOLIC CHURCH Stewardship Reflection on Readings IS 55: 6-9; PS 145: 2-3, 8-9, 17-18; PHIL 1: 20C-24, 27A; MT 20: 1-16A In our First Reading from the Book of Isaiah, God reminds us that He does not think in the same way that we do. For my thoughts are not your thoughts. That is quite clear in our Gospel today from Matthew, which relates the Parable of the Workers in the Vineyard. In the Gospel parable, God (who is represented by the landowner ) does something which from our human perspective may seem unfair and unjust. What we must keep in mind is that the landowner did not treat anyone unfairly. He may have seemed more generous to some than to others, but again that is from our perspective. We can be absolutely certain that God will never be unfair to us. The Lord may bestow greater blessings on others, some of whom again from our perspective may seem less deserving. God is a righteous God. Through stewardship we acknowledge that everything comes to us from God. All our blessings may seem to be more or less than we deserve, but if we are grateful for what we have and what we are, we will then recognize God s generosity and His grace. The important thing to us should not be and cannot be whether we are first or last. What is central is that we are part of the Kingdom of God. That should be sufficient for us. We get into trouble when we conclude that God should think the way we do. Weekly faith topic Eucharistic Processions Paul Turner The Body of Christ under the form of bread may be carried in solemn procession through public streets. The practice, more frequent in past generations and among certain ethnic groups, is still encouraged. A eucharistic procession forms after mass or after a period of adoration. It is especially appropriate on the solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ. Usually a priest places a large, unbroken, consecrated host inside a glass protector called a lunette. He then inserts the lunette into a monstrance. A monstrance is a beautifully crafted vessel that draws attention to the host. The priest, vested for Mass or wearing a white cope, holds the monstrance aloft. Ministers carrying lights and incense join him. Additional ministers may carry a canopy above the priest and the monstrance. The faithful join the procession, singing hymns and offering prayers as they walk. The procession may pause at stations decorated for the occasion, where the priest blesses the faithful with the monstrance. Ideally, the procession begins at one church And ends at another, where the priest gives a final benediction and reposes the Blessed Sacrament in the tabernacle. Alternatively, the procession may return to the church from which it began. Eucharistic processions evangelize the civic community, as Catholics witness to their faith. Throughout the 20th century the faithful began sharing communion at Mass more frequently than they did before, and many eucharistic devotions faded. The main reason Jesus gave his body and blood was for us to take, eat and drink. Although some eucharistic devotions are rarely seen, it is more important to see the faithful sharing communion at mass. Copyright 2012 Resource Publications, Inc., 160 E.
