The unclean spirit in Mark s Gospel tries to do just that, crying out, Jesus of Nazareth... the Holy One of God (Mark 1:24). But Jesus has the authority of God and this triumphs over the unclean spirit. Mark portrays Jesus as the prophet promised to Moses and the people in the first reading, I will raise up for them a prophet... and will put my words into his mouth (Deuteronomy 18:18). This gives Jesus the authority to drive out unclean spirits, as well as to teach with authority in the synagogue. The passage from Saint Paul s First Letter to the Corinthians can be understood in the light of his belief that the Second Coming was imminent. Considering the importance of this event, Paul wanted the faithful to spend less time worrying about the day-to-day concerns of this world. We don t hear what Jesus taught in the synagogue, but Mark tells us that he taught them as one having authority and not as the scribes (Mark 1:22). What would the scribes have said about a man with an unclean spirit in the synagogue? Probably that he was corrupting the place with his presence and that he should be cast out. But Jesus chooses to cast out the unclean spirit, not the person. He is not concerned, as the scribes would be, of becoming unclean himself.
