YOUR ITINERARY ISRAEL & PALESTINE Divided Holy Land OCTOBER 7-16, 2018 SUNDAY, OCTOBER 7: ARRIVE IN ISRAEL Depart by air for Tel Aviv on an overnight flight. MONDAY, OCTOBER 8: TEL AVIV / JERUSALEM Arrive at Ben Gurion International Airport this afternoon and transfer to the American Colony Hotel to check in for a five-night stay. Dinner tonight is at the hotel, with a specially invited legal adviser for the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs. D TUESDAY, OCTOBER 9: JERUSALEM Spend the morning in the Old City of Jerusalem, guided first by members of the far-right Ateret Cohanim movement and then by representatives of the left-leaning Ir Amim organization. Uncover the layers of the city s history from the time of the First Temple until the present day. Go beneath the Old City s maze of buildings at the Western Wall Tunnels, stopping for a falafel lunch en route. Walk along the Via Dolorosa, ending at the Church of the Holy Sepulcher to learn how different Christian sects share responsibility for the structure s upkeep. Continue through the Cardo, the Ramparts and the Four Quarters of the city. Our welcome dinner this evening is presided over by Jewish, Muslim and Christian religious leaders. WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 10: JERUSALEM / ISRAEL-GAZA BORDER After a breakfast session with an Israeli Defense Forces spokesperson and authority on security issues, proceed south to the Black Arrow Memorial at the Gaza border for a briefing. Tour Sderot and meet with residents at the Netiv Ha Assara Moshav to discuss life on the border and their hopes for a peaceful future. Return to Jerusalem to meet with members of the Parents Circle-Families Forum (PCFF), a grassroots organization of Palestinian and Israeli families who have lost immediate family members due to the conflict. The PCFF operates under the principle that a process of reconciliation is a prerequisite for achieving a sustained peace. Dinner tonight is at leisure. B, L THURSDAY, OCTOBER 11: JERUSALEM / WEST BANK Arrive in Bethlehem, perched on a hill at the edge of the Judean desert. Visit the Church of the Nativity, one of the holiest places in Christianity and a major pilgrimage destination. Look out over an Israeli settlement and learn about the international community s response to Israeli outposts in the occupied territories. Return to Jerusalem for a tour of the Yad Vashem Holocaust Museum, followed by time at leisure. You may wish to see the famed Dead Sea Scrolls at the Israel Museum or explore the lively markets. Reconvene this evening for a journalists panel moderated by Newsweek, followed by dinner.

Visit the family-run Taybeh Brewing Company, the region s first micro-brewery, and learn about the challenges of brewing and exporting beer in the West Bank. B, L SATURDAY, OCTOBER 13: JERUSALEM / HAIFA / UPPER GALILEE Join a young professor at the Instituto Superior de Arte (ISA), Travel north to the Arab Israeli town of Baka El Garbiyah. Meet with the Director of Al-Qasemi College for Science and Engineering, a tireless promoter of Arab society in Israel and women s leadership. Continue to Haifa, Israel s third largest city and home to both Jews and Muslims. The shared society can be best experienced at the Technion, Israel s leading technical research institute where researchers from all faiths work together. Stop for views of the dramatic terraced gardens of the Bahá í faith. Gather for a cooking workshop and early dinner at the home of Druze residents in the village of Julis. The Druze community has preserved their traditions and secret beliefs for centuries, in spite of being cut off from their fellow believers in Syria and Lebanon. SUNDAY, OCTOBER 14: UPPER GALILEE / TEL AVIV Drive along the border to Metulla, Israel s northernmost town, to meet with a former Israeli Defense Forces commander, who will outline the current security concerns regarding Hezbollah forces in Lebanon and the civil war in Syria. Board jeeps for a ride through the foothills of the Golan Heights and the battlefields of the 1973 Arab-Israeli War. Visit the bunkers at Mount Bental just across from the Syrian town of Kuneitra. Drive to Tel Aviv to check in at the Carlton Tel Aviv for a two-night stay. Dinner is at leisure to explore the city s excellent dining scene. B, L MONDAY, OCTOBER 15: TEL AVIV Join the EU Ambassador to Israel who will speak on perceptions of Israel abroad from both a political and a societal standpoint. Then visit the United States Embassy for a presentation and special lunch. Take a graffiti tour of Tel Aviv; as in many cities, graffiti has become an important medium for local artistic expression. Toast an exciting and enlightening journey at our farewell dinner at one of Tel Aviv s excellent restaurants. TUESDAY, OCTOBER 16: RETURN Depart the hotel for the flight home.
