REASON & RELIGIOUS BELIEF: AN INTRODUCTION TO THE PHILOSOPHY OF RELIGION BY MICHAEL PETERSON, WILLIAM HASKER, BRUCE REICHENBACH, DAVID BA PDF Reason and Religious Belief, now in its fifth edition, explores perennial questions in the philosophy of religion. Drawing from the best in both classical and contemporary discussions, the authors examine religious experience, faith and reason, the divine attributes, arguments for and against the existence of God, divine action (in various forms of theism), Reformed epistemology, religious language, religious diversity, and religion and science. Revised and updated to reflect current philosophical discourse, the fifth edition offers new material on neuro-theology, the "new Atheism," the intelligent design movement, theistic evolution, and skeptical theism. It also provides more coverage of non-western religions--particularly Buddhism--and updated discussions of evidentialism, free will, life after death, apophatic theology, and more. A sophisticated yet accessible introduction, Reason and Religious Belief, Fifth Edition, is ideally suited for use with the authors' companion anthology, Philosophy of Religion: Selected Readings, Fourth Edition (OUP, 2009). I have really enjoyed reading some other philosophy of religion textbooks, but this one was a drag, and it didn't seem to do as good a job of presenting the arguments/reasons for positions as other books. Oftentimes it seemed like the authors were trying to do too much in a limited amount of space, and so important parts of the arguments were left out. Instead of a thorough analysis of the issues, it sometimes reads much more like a list of views that people hold. This is less than ideal, in my mind, for any textbook, but is particularly unfortunate for a philosophy book, as what really matters are the arguments, less-so the various positions held. (It may be worth speculating that there is a companion anthology that is occasionally referenced--the authors may have assumed that their readers were working through original work alongside the textbook, and thus the arguments for positions would be given there. If the case, then they expects students to a) shell out a whole lot of money than they should have to, and b) read much more than anyone in an intro class will read. Particularly when some of the selections are as dull as this one. But again, this is merely speculation.) As a final complaint, there are a surprising number of typos, given that the book was published by Oxford University Press. Without those, it might have warranted 3 stars, but with all of the basic mistakes, two is the most that seems justified. 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A Great Introduction By Stephanie Morgan Miller A great introduction into the world of Christian philosophy in a considerate and well articulated book.
Reason & Religious Belief is easily understood by those without a philosophical background but still intellectually challenging in the way that it calls the reader to investigate the relationship between reason and faith. I strongly urge others to read this book as way to better relate to the world around us while still maintaining the integrity of Christianity. 3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Gets the job done. By Erika Langford I purchased this book for my Philosophy of Religion class. Neither philosophy nor religion are two of my favorite subjects, and this is not a very exciting book, but it does help you understand religions other than your own as well as make you think about your own views of religion in different ways.
