In the future we might have both an assistant pastor and a resident priest, much like when Fr. Steve Emmanuel was here, so we will be updating the house next door to the pastor s home. Under the expert direction of Mr. Bill Heese, we will transform the current one bathroom, three bedroom house into a home with two bathrooms and two two-room suites. There will also be an extra bedroom for a guest priest. Mr. Heese is looking for volunteers who are able to provide advice and to work in the following areas: electrical, plumbing, wood floor refinishing, insulating, framing, dry walling and painting. It would be nice if you were available to assist Mr. Hesse during the day, but it might also be possible to work on your own during evenings and weekends. Please consider sharing your gifts for this project. Please feel free to contact Bill at bheese@saintcolumbkille.org or by calling him at (402) 616-4740. Pax, Fr. Dave

Reeson s Ramblings There is no shortage of generous young people in our Church today who are answering God s call. We are sometimes disheartened by the shortage of young people entering convents and seminaries today. I know for a fact this is not because our young people are selfish. In 1988, I was assigned to Andrews AFB as a chaplain. A young Lt. Colonel and his wife had two children, and their daughter, Kelsey, must have been in the third grade. Years later when I was at Offutt, they were here and Kelsey, now in HS helped her Mom in the Religious Education Program. Fast forward again and I connected with her father, who was now a General in the USAF and assigned in Baghdad with me (or perhaps I was with him). During a Skype session I learned that Kelsey was about to graduate from college and had an interest in volunteering with a Catholic organization called, Heart s Home USA. As a sponsor I get regular reports from the field where she describes her experiences. Below is an excerpt about what she s up to. My dearest family and friends, I write to you all from Argentina, where I am for a few weeks after leaving behind my dear Uruguay. These last two months in Uruguay were marked by an emotional goodbye shared with Carole, culminating with a beautiful farewell party and Mass. The most beautiful part of the sunny afternoon with homemade Uruguayan snacks and traditional songs was the packed Mass celebrated by our Bishop, Father Eduardo, and other priest Friends. We shared the Mass with many friends from all over the city and the neighborhood, some arriving for the first time to our home or to Mass! All of our friends entered into a beautiful atmosphere of prayer and Christ was truly in the center, where we tried to place Him especially during this last month of mission during our last visits. Many of these friends will forget me and I, too, will surely forget some of them, but that does not matter. Our encounter was real, a real encounter with Christ. After all, our mission is to be God s Presence to our friends. What a consolation that, though I am no longer there, Christ remains with our friends. They must seek Him, not me. Just as so many of them presented Christ to me! Of all the places I miss, Cottolengo must be the place I miss most (pictured below left). It became a second home for us as we went at least once a week and had freedom to wander through the whole home. So many of these 200+ men became incredible friends. This place of apparent pain and misery was a place of such joy and peace for me, a place of profound encounter with Christ, where I heard the Lord s voice and became my true self. Julieta came to comfort me as I thanked our friends at the end of the Mass Kelsey is not alone. You have heard and supported a number of these young folks right here at St. Columbkille parish. God has called and inspired many wonderful young people from our parish and faith communities everywhere. We have four young people serving as FOCUS missionaries on college campuses: Shannon Zurcher, who is in her 7 th year as a missionary and is now Director of Collegiate Outreach for the Southern Plains Region, Rob Cargill, who is in his 3 rd year and now serves as a Team Director, David Cargill, who spend 2 years as a FOCUS missionary, 1 year in seminary, and is now back with FOCUS, and Molly Dejka, who serves at West Virginia University. Allison Dethlefs is serving the people of Bolivia through a Franciscan Mission. Minh Tran, a seminarian from our parish, is in Theology I at Assumption Seminary in San Antonio. Chris Dethlefs raised money through Notre Dame s Boxing Club for a mission trip. Kara Harvey went on a medical mission trip to the Dominican Republic. These are just a few examples of the young people from our parish who follow God s call to service. Many others participate in short and long missionary trips to Central and South America or give a year or more of their time with Heart s Home USA, the Jesuit Volunteer Corp, Mercy Volunteer Corp, Franciscan Volunteers, and other organizations. Once a month at our Masses we say a prayer for vocations. When I say this prayer, I often think of vocations to the religious life and priesthood but as I reflect, I am convinced that God is answering our prayers with some awesome young people like Kelsey and the many you have heard from after Masses at St. Columbkille. At this time, they publicly declare their intention to continue this journey of discernment. This rite places the catechumens, those who are not yet baptized, and candidates, those who are baptized, in a formal relationship with the universal Church. During the rite, members of the parish community were asked to affirm that they are ready to help and support the RCIA candidates and catechumens seeking to follow Christ. Am I caring for and cultivating God s creation? The feast day of St. Francis of Assisi is this Wednesday, October 4th. We encourage all parishioners to follow the examples of both St. Francis and Pope Francis in caring for and cultivating all of creation. On October 7th we will have the annual blessing of the animals. Pope Francis calls on us to respect the natural laws of the world, offering the land and animals alike a chance to rest, helping and assisting both neighbor and livestock when need arises, and caring even for the birds when they have fallen to the ground (Deut.22:4, 6). The Bible does not support the idea that humans are allowed to plunder and destroy other creatures. Saint Francis, faithful to Scripture, invites us to see nature as a magnificent book in which God speaks to us and grants us a glimpse of his infinite beauty and goodness. Through the greatness and the beauty of creatures one comes to know by analogy their maker (Wis. 13:5). Please join us in signing the St. Francis Pledge to care for creation, either online at http:// www.catholicclimatecovenant.org/pledge, or in person during the Blessing of Animals on October 7th at 10:00 in the church courtyard! 100 TH ANNIVERSARY MASS AND ROSARY FOR FATIMA On Friday, Oct. 13, at 7:30pm in the church there will be a Mass followed by the Holy Rosary led by the Legion of Mary in honor of the 100 th anniversary of the Miracle of the Sun that occurred in Fatima, Portugal. Father Dave will be celebrant. The Blessed Virgin implored the daily praying of the Rosary in each of her six appearances. During the final apparition October 13, 1917, she finally revealed her identity: I am Our Lady of the Rosary. Although she appeared in Portugal during the time of World War I, Our Lady s message of hope and peace remains the same poignant and substantially necessary message for today. It can be summed up in six essential requests: Live good, holy Christian lives; stop offending God. Pray especially for the conversion of sinners. Pray the Rosary every day (the only request made in all six appearances). Make sacrifices for sinners. Make reparation for the offenses by which God (and Our Lady) are offended, thus saving souls. Develop proper devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Please join us in celebrating this special 100 th anniversary, and to thank God for his goodness is giving us our good and most loving a mother, Mary! ARCHBISHOP S ANNUAL APPEAL Envelopes for the Archbishop s Annual Appeal can be found at all entrances of the church, and you also should have received on at your home address. Please mail these envelopes back to the Archdiocese of Omaha, as opposed to leaving them in the collection at Mass. Thank you! Date: Thursday, October 19, 2017 at 6:30pm Place: The Stave - 320 North Washington St. Please join us for our annual kick-off party to see how YOU can help participate in our parish s largest fundraiser. Ceili is a fantastic way to get your service hours as there are multiple jobs that need to be done and some that can be done from the comfort of your own home.
