Choosing Your Saint: Prayer Partner for Life What is the purpose? Historically, in the Church the notion of a name being changed is associated with a change of life. When, God makes his covenant with Abram, he tells Abram that his name will be Abraham (Genesis 17:4) because God is making him the father of a host of nations. When Jacob struggles with the angel, he is told his new name is Israel (Genesis 32:29) because he has contended with the divine and human beings and prevailed. When Jesus told Simon that his new name was now Peter (Matthew 16:18), it was because his role was changing and he was going to be asked to take on a role of leadership. So to take on a new name at Confirmation also carries with it the idea that you are asking for the Lord to change you. To take ownership and to live your faith more fully and with more life than you ever could ve imagined. Prayer Partner for Life The name of the saint should have some significance to you, and that particular saint is an example of the type of holiness you would like. Some people take St. Francis because they want to be kind to animals, or some people take St. Joseph because they want to be as holy as he was, or some people take St. Monica because she had such patience with her children, and the list could go on. The idea is to pick somebody who says something about you. And when you stand before the Bishop the day of your Confirmation and you tell him your name, say it with pride, with conviction and with the knowledge that the Holy Spirit is going to change you forever. Check out www.americancatholic.org. Click on SAINTS. You can look up Saints by name, date, patron, etc., under the saints tab.

Things to consider when choosing your Confirmation sponsor. Are they active and practicing the faith? Are they committed to living the Catholic faith throughout their lives? How do they demonstrate their commitment to the Catholic faith? Are they someone you are close to and you can talk to them about your faith struggles? How are they a spiritual role model to you? Have they encouraged you to grow in your faith life? How long have they been confirmed? A year or less does not necessarily make them the best choice. Whoever you choose as your sponsor, make this decision wisely and with forethought. This is not just an honor you grant your good friend or relative because they are available and they fit the requirements. The role of your Confirmation sponsor is to be a guide and witness to you as you continue to grow in your faith. Your sponsor should be someone you can talk with about the spiritual things in your life. They don t need to be great theologians or church historians. They need to have a love for the Sacraments, the Traditions, and be engaged in deepening and strengthening their own faith life through prayer and involvement in the life of the Church. Ideally, if your godparents are still active and practicing the faith, they should be the people you consider first as your Confirmation sponsor. They were witnesses to your entrance into the life of Christ through your baptism, and promised to help your parents guide you in the faith.
