Rev. Dr. Jerry A. Moore, Jr. The Rev. Dr. Jerry A. Moore, Jr., one of five children born to the late Jerry A. Moore, Sr. and Mae Dee Moore, was born in Minden, Louisiana on June 12, 1918. He received his early education in Minden. After graduating from high school, he enrolled in Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia and earned the Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in English and a minor in music. While at Morehouse, his rich baritone voice earned him a position as soloist in its glee club. By the end of his senior year, he was persuaded that God was calling him to the Christian ministry. In obedience to the call, he enrolled in the Howard University School of Religion. While there he was assigned to the Nineteenth Street Baptist Church as a student assistant to the pastor, Dr. Walter H. Brooks. Rev. Dr. Moore subsequently received the Bachelor of Divinity and Master of Arts degrees from Howard University. He later received numerous honorary doctorates and he earned a Ph.D degree from LaSalle University. After graduation from Howard University, Rev. Dr. Moore returned to New Orleans, LA and was employed as assistant manager of the Poydras Street USSO and then as a boys work secretary of the YMCA, and finally as personnel officer in the Port of Embarkation. In early August 1944, Rev. Dr. Moore received a request to return to Washington, DC to assume the duties as assistant to the pastor of Nineteenth Street Baptist Church, Dr. Walter H. Brooks. He remained in this position until Dr. Brooks passed on to glory in 1945. Following Dr. Brooks death, Rev. Moore was asked to become the acting pastor of the Nineteenth Street Baptist Church. He served in this capacity until the church elected him Pastor on April 5, 1946. He was officially installed on the fourth Sunday of May, 1946. Favorite Scripture: A BRIEF SUMMARY OF REV. DR. JERRY A. MOORE, JR. S LIFE: Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct thy paths. (Proverbs 3:5) Favorite Song: My Heavenly Father Watches Over Me ( I Trust in God ) The Reverend Dr. Jerry A. Moore, Jr. served as the Pastor of Nineteenth Street Baptist Church in the District of Columbia for over 50 years. In addition to the leadership of his congregation, he had an esteemed record of public service in the District of Columbia. Reverend Dr. Moore was appointed to the DC City Council by President Richard M. Nixon in 1969 and elected as an At- Large Councilmember in the first Council election after Home Rule was established in 1974 where he served until 1984. Family In 1946 Rev. Moore and Ettyce Hill of Washington, DC were married. They remained in matrimony for 68 years until Ettyce s death in 2014. In addition to their two sons, grandchildren and great grandchildren, Jerry and Ettyce saw the entire church membership as their family. Service to the Government Rev. Moore served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Washington Metro Area Transit Authority (WMATA) for three terms where he spearheaded a Minority set-asides program and pushed for establishing handicapped street and curb accessibility. The city s subway system began during his leadership. He represented the United States at the Independence of Belize and the flag-lowering ceremony from 300 years of British colonial presence. Rev. Moore served as a delegate to three National Republican Conventions and was nominated by President George H. W. Bush to be ambassador to Lesotho, Africa. Service to the Community Rev. Moore founded the Conference of Minority Transportation Officials (COMTO) and the Morehouse College Alumni Association (DC and Vicinity Chapter). GOD CALLS by Rev. Dr. Jerry A. Moore, Jr. Out from sin I am called, To go to men of low degree And lift them higher Where God doth reign. By His word I am called. Servant am I to great and small; Denying to none His grace so rich That saves the souls of sinful men. By His love I am called, To do unto others as he would do--- Restore the fallen, raise up the weak. Life and hope, He would have me bring. His call I ll answer with my life. To Him I ll give my very best; As long as breath will last, For God, I ll try any task. (April 7, 1956)
