Picture # 1 was a Roman temple located in Rome, Italy in the 2 nd century. It was built to honor the Gods. Romans were accepting of many gods. Among the most popular were the gods of Greece. Picture # 2 is a masterpiece of Renaissance sculpture created by Michelangelo from 1501 to 1504. The marble statue portrays the Biblical King David in the nude. He chose to represent David before his victory over Goliath. Picture # 3 according to legend, a giant horse in which Greeks hid to gain entrance into the city of Troy in 600s BC. That night Troy opened its gates allowing the Greek army to enter and destroy the city. Homer later wrote about the accounts in the Odyssey.

4 Picture # 4 was the French king during the French Revolution. Popularly known as the Sun King, his reign was the longest document in European history. He was beheaded during the rebellion. Picture # 5 was the English and Irish Queen in England from November 1558 until her death in 1603. She was the last of the Tudor family. She is most notably known for defeating the Spanish Armada and establishing Great Britain as the Royal power of the Sea. Picture # 6 was the French method of beheading people in opposition to the French Revolution. It was perhaps one of the more brutal methods of revolution. King Louis XIV and Marie Antoinette were amongst ones beheaded. Picture # 7 are water supply or navigable channels constructed to convey water during the Roman Empire in the 1 st and 2 nd century. In ancient times it was just a water bridge. In modern engineering, it is used for any systems of pipes, ditches, canals, tunnels, and other structures. Picture # 8 was an amphitheatre in the center of Rome, Italy, in the first century. It is the largest ever built in the Roman Empire. It is one of the greatest works of Roman engineering and used for gladiator and public speaking events. Picture # 9 is the subject in Christian art depicting the Virgin Mary cradling the dead body of Jesus, most often found in sculpture. The sculpture was created by Michelangelo. It is a masterpiece of the Renaissance. Picture # 10 Bonaparte was a military and political leader of France in the early 19 th century. His actions shaped European politics. The French invasion of Russia marked the end of Napoleon s fortunes as Emperor. Picture # 11 in Greek and later Roman mythology, is a member of a primordial race of giants in the first century. Each has a single eye in the middle of its forehead. Many writers have depicted several this person. Picture # 12 is any one of a number of non-handheld mechanical devices used to throw or hurl a projectile a great distance without the aid of explosive substances. The catapult has been used since ancient times and is proven to be one of the more effective mechanisms during warfare. It was appeared to be created in 399 BC in the city of Syracuse by the tyrant Dionysius. Picture # 13 is a style of architecture which flourished during the high and the late medieval period. It evolved from Romanesque architecture and was succeeded by Renaissance architecture. Picture # 14 is a 16 th century portrait painted in oil on a popular panel by Leonardo da Vinci during the Italian Renaissance. The work is owned by the government of France, and is on the wall in the Louvre in Paris. It is perhaps the most famous and iconic painting n the world. Picture # 15 is the best-known chapel in the Apostolic Palace, the official residence of the Pope in the Vatican City. It is famous for its architecture and its

decoration which has been frescoed throughout by the greatest Renaissance artists including Michelangelo. He painted 12,000 square feet and the Last Judgment was perhaps his greatest achievement. 5 Picture # 16 are defensive structures symbolic of the Middle Ages. They were private fortresses built for protection from foreign invaders, usually non Christian. Castles led to the feudal and manorial systems in medieval Europe. Picture # 17 are manufacturing plants or industrial buildings where workers manufacture goods of supervise machines processing one product into another. Most factories have large warehouses. Typically factories gather and concentrate resources: workers, capital, and plant. Picture # 18 were gentlemen soldiers, members of a warrior class during the Middle Ages in Europe. Knights in Medieval Europe were associated with horsemanship. They also were experts in jousting. Picture # 19 are aircraft capable of flight using forward motion that causes air to pass over its wings to generate lift. The Wright Brothers made their first successful test flights in December 1903. Charles Lindberg was the first to fly across the Atlantic Ocean. Picture # 20 in the Christian Gospels, was the last meal Jesus shared with his 12 Apostles and disciples before his death. The last supper has been the subject of many paintings, perhaps the most famous by Leonardo da Vinci. Eat bread and drink from this cup and do it in remembrance of me. Which essay am I? The Ancient Greeks made several contributions to society, including in government, philosophy, literature, architecture, and art. Athens developed the world s first democracy. Classical thinkers like Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle laid the foundations of western philosophy. Hellenistic thinkers founded new schools of learning. Historians tried to record history impartially, Athens wrote the world s first tragedies and comedies. Ancient Greeks built majestic temples. Sculptures and painters created pieces that represented daily life. Essay # 2 The Ancient Romans made several contributions to society. Engineering and architecture techniques influenced later building practices. Art and literature influenced how people thought and wrote for centuries. Latin developed into the Romance languages and influenced English. Roman civil laws is the basis for many of the world s modern law codes. Essay # 3 Europe is traditionally one of the seven continents. It is the northwestern peninsula of the larger landmass known as Eurasia. The southern region of Europe contains high lands like the Alps mountains and the north is made up of the Northern European Plain. Major countries include England, France, Spain, Italy, and Germany. There are many different cultures and different climates in Europe.

Essay # 4 Their were short term and long term causes of the French Revolution. Short term: poor harvest, lack of food, massive government debt, fall of the Bastille, King Louis XIV refusal to accept financial reform. Long term: great inequalities in society, spread of enlightenment ideas, weak leadership. Their were short and long term effects as well. Short term: a written constitution for France, end of the monarchy and execution of the king and queen, European alliance against France, reign of terror. Long term: Napoleon s seizes power, growth of nationalism throughout Europe, congress of Vienna. Essay # 5 Gothic Architecture is a style of architecture which flourished during the high and the late medieval period. It evolved from Romanesque architecture and was succeeded by Renaissance architecture. It replaced traditional church architecture. Essay # 6 Explorers from countries throughout Europe set out in search of new routes to Asia. Instead of Asia, many explored wound up in America. Europeans established colonies in the lands they discovered. The Spanish conquered Native American tribes to build an empire. The Portuguese settled Brazil. The French, Dutch, and the English established colonies in North America and the Caribbean. New economic systems began to emerge Mercantilism. Essay # 7 Feudalism agreement between Lords and Vassals. Lords provide a fief, offer protection, and resolve disputes between knights. Vassals provide military service, remain loyal and faithful, and give money on special occasions. Manoralism agreement between Lords and Peasants. Lords own manors and provide protection form attacks and provide farming lands. Peasants live on the land, give a portion of their crops to the lord and farm the land. Essay # 8 This was a cultural movement that spanned roughly the 14 th to the 17 th century, beginning in Florence in the Late Middle Ages and later spread to the rest of Europe. It encompassed a resurgence of learning and better one s self. It also led to the reformation of the Catholic church. Essay # 9 Catholicism is a broad term for the body of the Catholic faith, its theologies and doctrines. Refers to continuity back to the earliest churches. Catholicism can include a monastic life, religious orders, a religious appreciation of the arts, a communal understanding of sin and redemption, missionary activity, and always "communion the Bishop of Rome" and the degree or form of primacy that what he calls the Communion of Catholic Churches attribute to his chair or office. Essay # 10 It was a Christian reform movement in Europe which is generally deemed to have begun with Martin Luther's Ninety-Five Theses in 1517 although a number of precursors such as Jan Hus predate that event. The Reformation is considered to have ended with the Peace of Westphalia in 1648; [1] however, many of the denominations that arose during that period continue to exist and Protestantism constitutes one of the branches of Christianity toda 6
