The Importance of Praying the Rosary St. Louis De Montfort tells us in his timeless book on Our Lady, True Devotion, that the safest, easiest, shortest and most perfect way of approaching Jesus is through Mary. The Rosary is the tool that Mary gave to St. Dominic to help us grow in our relationship with her, to recognize her mysterious role in the story of salvation. In the same way that Jesus came to us through Mary, so do we come to him through her divine intervention as the Mother of all Christians and the Queen of Heaven and Earth. It is through her Rosary that we are tied to God s grace and as faithful benefactors of such blessings, we are better equipped to carry out the personal missions God gives us to complete. This book was written to help parents complete their mission of raising Christ-like children by helping them come to know, love, and serve Jesus through the love of his Mother. The Rosary, then, becomes the lifeline that unites us with the Holy Family, engaging our hearts and minds with the mysteries that each decade represents. For each mystery, I have provided two components: The first is an image of the mystery taken from sacred art over the past two millennia. These serve as a focal point to ignite our imagination and place ourselves in the scene of each mystery. The second component is a description of each mystery in child-like simplicity. The words were chosen deliberately to identify with children 10 years old and younger so that they can comprehend the basic fruits of each mystery. This will serve as a solid foundation for their faith. As they grow in strength and wisdom, they can be exposed to the sacred scriptures when they are mature enough to understand them. The Rosary has been called the "epitome of the whole Gospel (CCC 971) and as such, it teaches children the greatest story ever told. It is recommended that the Rosary be prayed together with your children at a determined time each day so that the seeds of the Rosary can be planted, tilled, watered, and nourished through the repetition, contemplation, and imitation of the virtues it promotes.

How to Pray the Rosary The structure of the Rosary is as follows: The Rosary begins on the short strand: The sign of the cross on the Crucifix; The Apostles' Creed, still on the Crucifix; The Lord's Prayer at the first large bead (for the intentions of the pope and the needs of the Church); The Hail Mary on each of the next three beads (for the three theological virtues: faith, hope, and charity); and The Glory Be on the next large bead. The praying of the decades then follows, repeating this cycle for each mystery: Announce the mystery, then read the Rosary in Kid Speak selection The Lord's Prayer on the large bead; The Hail Mary on each of the ten adjacent small beads; The Glory Be on the space before the next large bead; and the Fatima Prayer to conclude each decade To conclude: Hail, Holy Queen The Rosary Prayer The sign of the cross. If you need a reminder on how to pray these prayers, head over to the appendix and you ll find them all there. Also in the appendix, you ll find a schedule on which days the Church recommends you pray each mystery.

The First Joyful Mystery The Annunciation Fruit of the Mystery: Humility One day, Mary was praying alone in her room. All of a sudden, the Angel Gabriel appeared and said, Hail, Mary! She was afraid at what the Angel told her. The Angel said, Don t be scared. God has chosen you. You will have a baby who will become the King of the world and you will name him Jesus. The Holy Spirit will come over you and you will become the Mother of God. Mary said, I am the handmaid of the Lord. I will do whatever God asks of me.

The Second Joyful Mystery The Visitation Fruit of the Mystery: Love of Neighbor When Mary was pregnant with Jesus, she went to visit her cousin, Elizabeth, who was also pregnant. She had the baby John the Baptist in her tummy. When Mary arrived, Elizabeth shouted, Blessed are thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb! This meant that she knew that Jesus was God and that Mary was very blessed to be Jesus mother. Elizabeth then said, When I heard your voice, my baby jumped for joy in my tummy! Mary replied, My soul brings honor to God. My spirit is so happy because He loves me. He cares so much for those who are poor. Mary stayed with Elizabeth for three months.

The Third Joyful Mystery The Nativity Fruit of the Mystery: Poverty, Detachment from the things of the world, Contempt of Riches, Love of the Poor Mary and Joseph returned to his hometown of Bethlehem. It was a busy time of the year and there was no place for them to stay. Mary was about to have her baby, so Joseph looked for a place for them to stay the night, but all he was able to find was a tiny stable. There, surrounded by animals and the darkness of night, Jesus was born. Shepherds and wise men from far away countries came to visit Jesus and they knelt before him calling him their King. Mary kept all of these memories in her heart and mind while Joseph protected her and Jesus.

The Fourth Joyful Mystery The Presentation of Jesus Fruit of the Mystery: Gift of Wisdom and Purity of mind and body (Obedience) After Jesus was born, Mary and Joseph took him to the temple to be blessed. Simeon, the priest of the temple, saw Jesus and said, I have been waiting my entire life to see this boy! God told me that before I died, I would see the King of Kings, and here he is! He will suffer a lot, and so will you Mary, but he will become the ruler of all people in the end. Taking the child and lifting him up toward God, Simeon said, This is the Messiah, the one you who have sent to save your people.

The Fifth Joyful Mystery Finding Jesus in the Temple Fruit of the Mystery: True Conversion (Piety, Joy of Finding Jesus) When Jesus was twelve, Mary, Joseph, and Jesus were traveling to celebrate Passover. When they began their journey home from Jerusalem, Jesus stayed behind, but he didn t tell his parents. Mary thought Jesus was with Joseph and Joseph thought Jesus was with Mary. After a while, they couldn t find Jesus. With great sorrow, they walked back, hoping they would find him again. When they reached the temple, there he was praying and asking questions of the priests, who were amazed at how smart Jesus was. Mary said, Why did you leave us? Jesus said, Didn t you know that I would be in my Father s house? Mary kept this memory in her heart. Jesus went back home and was obedient to them.
