Psalm 77 Unison Prayer Loving God, at this time, we remember that going up to Jerusalem cost Jesus his very life. So we come before you, conscious of the way religious words and holy phrases can slip so easily from our lazy lips and our hardened hearts. What do we really know of your mountainous truth, your rock-hard integrity, the depth of your suffering for love of us all? Forgive us for the shallowness of our faith, and the timidity of our following: forgive us for the ready excuses we make for going our own way and claiming it as yours. Turn us around again, we pray, by your Holy Spirit, active within us and among us. Show us how to be open again to your faithfulness and to your freedom, that we may live new lives and be again bearers of the seeds of the Kingdom of Jesus. Amen. Reading It was on the Monday Anthem God, Stir the Soil Choir by Roland E. Martin God stir the soil, Run the ploughshare deep, Overturn the hard, dry ground. God, God, stir the soil, Run the ploughshare deep, Overturn the hard, dry ground, Spare no strength nor toil, Even though I weep. In the loose, fresh mangled earth Sow new seed. Free of withered vine and weed, Bring fair flowers to birth, God, stir the soil, Bring fair flowers to birth. God, stir the soil.
Reading It was on the Tuesday Anthem A Lenten Prayer Choir by Hal H. Hopson Lord, who throughout these forty days for us did fast and pray, teach us with thee to mourn our sins, and close by thee to stay. Jesus walked this lonesome valley, he had to walk it by himself; oh, nobody else could walk it for him, he had to walk it by himself. We must walk this lonesome valley, we have to walk it by ourselves; oh, nobody else can walk it for us, we have to walk it by ourselves. You must go and stand your trial, you have to stand it by yourself, oh, nobody else can stand it for you, you have to stand it by yourself. And through these days of penitence, and through thy Passiontide, yea, evermore, in life and death, O Lord, with us abide. Reading Offertory It was on the Wednesday Take My Hands Take my hands, oh, take my hands. Take my hands, oh, take my hands. Let them bless; let them open wide. Take my hands, O God. Guide my feet, oh, guide my feet. Guide my feet, oh, guide my feet. Help them move; help them lead the way. Guide my feet, O God. Tune my heart, oh, tune my heart. Tune my heart, oh, tune my heart. Make it sing; make it full of love. Tune my heart, O God. Bless my soul, oh, bless my soul. Bless my soul, oh, bless my soul. I am yours; I am in your hands. Bless my soul, O God. Reading It was on the Friday Anthem They Crucified My Lord Choir by Michael Burkhardt Unison Prayer They crucified my Lord, and he never said a mumbalin word. They nailed him to a tree, and he never said a mumbalin word. They pierced him in the side, and he never said a mumbalin word. He hung his head and died, and he never said a mumbalin word. Savior of the world, what have you done to deserve this? And what have we done to deserve you? Strung up between criminals, cursed and spat upon, you wait for death, and look for us, for us whose sin has crucified you. To the mystery of undeserved suffering, you bring the deeper mystery of unmerited love. Forgive us for not knowing what we have done; open our eyes to what we are doing now, as, through wood and nails, you disempower our depravity and transform us by your grace. Amen. *Hymn Ah, Holy Jesus Choir and Congregation arr. John Ferguson Choir Men Ah, holy Jesus how have you offended, That mortal judgement has on you descended? By foes derided, by your own rejected, O most afflicted! Who was the guilty? Who brought this upon you? Alas, my treason, Jesus, has undone you. Twas I, Lord Jesus, I it was denied you; I crucified you. Women Lo, the Good Shepherd for the sheep is offered; The slave has sinned, and the son has suffered; For our atonement, while we nothing heeded, God interceded.
All All For me, kind Jesus, was your incarnation, Your mortal sorrow and your life s oblation, Your death of anguish and your bitter Passion, For my salvation. Therefore, kind Jesus, since I cannot pay you, I do adore you, and will ever pray you, Think on your pity and your love unswerving, Not my deserving.
