The Law of Abundance Dr. M. W. Lewis San Diego, 4-27-58 Everybody s interested in abundance. "The Law of Abundance. The law of abundance is based on the recognition of the inadequacy of human means as compared to Divine Sufficiency. Things of human nature do not last. We cannot depend on them. But, if we turn to the Divine, then we will never be wanting in anything, because God is the Cause and End of all things. He has made all things. From Him all things have come. And we should realize, that far from being impractical to think that, or to doubt, that we can take God into every action, we should realize that even taking Him with us in material things, to find, and attain our material necessities, is the commonsense way to act. Now even the great Babaji spoke of this. And in the Autobiography [of a Yogi] (AY), we read this, these following words, Few mortals know that the kingdom of God includes the kingdom of mundane fulfillments, Babaji said. So you can readily see how important it is to take God with us in every action, even in the making of money, or the fulfilling of our necessary necessities in this worldly existence. Because God is in everything, and when
one like the great Babaji says that, we should never doubt again, that even our slightest wish as to our needs will be fulfilled, if we can make the contact with God, and thereby know that He hears us, and will answer us. And so, even in times of disaster let us never forget that God s devotee and lover is watched over. Understand that. If God notes the sparrow s fall, certainly He will take note of, and protect, and watch over His true devotee, and one who really loves Him. That s perhaps the key sentence this morning in this talk on The Law of Abundance. Realize that. And in order to have true wealth, we must recognize God as the source. Not outward things. Not things of mundane consciousness. But we must see the Pure Beam behind the projection of light and shadow of this worldly existence, and understand God is the source of prosperity and abundance, and then do something about it. Then act not sit down and wait for God to give it to you. That s why many people do not receive abundance. They do not do their part. We must do something about it. We must act. We must do the best we can. But never forget that God is the real Giver. Now our Master s definition of the law of abundance, or prosperity, is this. He said We must have a balanced life, or a life of all- round development.
In the first place we must have meditation, because we re not only physical beings, but we re spiritual beings. And we must have that meditation for what purpose? To contact God that we receive abundance. If all things come from God, which I m sure we all realize that they do, must we not make contact with Him? So meditation is perhaps the most important thing in an all- round development, or a balanced life. Meditation is necessary, because we must feed the spiritual side of us, and we must make the contact with that which gives us abundance, or gives us all things. Secondly, intellectual studies are necessary. Not just book learning, but intellectual studies are necessary. That you apply those studies, and experience things, and know things in a...an empirical way. That is, take for instance, the SRF lessons Self-Realization Fellowship lessons. They re theoretical. But, when you study them, and then experience the truths in them, then you have changed that intellectual knowledge into realization, which is very important. If you read a book on yoga, you read the AY, unless you follow through, and through meditation and God contact realize the truth, then it still remains theoretical knowledge. And so intellectual studies are necessary, that we convert them into experience, you see, into realization.
Now another thing is health. Health is important. Many of you know that, if the body is not healthy it s difficult to carry on as well as when it is perfectly well. But, we should realize this as far as health goes that there are two main things. First, have those foods which are vital, simple and vital, and natural. And the second thing is, take those foods which you can handle, and digest, and utilize. This is not a lecture on food and health, but we have to say one or two things, because this is one of the requisites of a balanced life. Have the vital food, and use those foods, which you can handle. Keep the body clean, inside and out, so that you can receive the baptism of the Holy Ghost. You cannot receive the spiritual Light, if the body is filled up with toxins. God consciousness being of a spiritual nature cannot be received; you will reflect it. But, if you keep the body clean, inside and out, and meditate properly, then, you receive the spiritual Light, and from that Light you will receive all you need all the abundance that you need. Now another point the Master has brought out is this; is do and act, that we attain happiness true happiness. In other words, we must have not only outward happiness, pleasurable happiness, but we must have that Bliss of the soul, because of our spiritual nature. So true happiness is what? Not just pleasure. True happiness is the Bliss of God s presence within you as you enjoy the gifts which He
has given to you. Understand the difference between ordinary happiness, and true happiness. And finally, the last point is making money. Why not? Why not make money? God has put the money here. The only thing is, when you make the money, use it. Use it to serve God, and His children. That s all. And, if you do that, there ll be no attachment. It s the attachment to the fruits of money, or the things which money produces, that causes all the disturbance. But, if you use the money to serve God, and His children, without attachment, then money is useful, and will bring you great happiness. Understand that. And the key is, as I said in the beginning, work only to please God. Make money. Yes, make money. For what purpose? To please God by helping others, and help yourselves at the same time. Work for God. Work to please God. I don t care what business you are in; what profession you are in; or whether you stay at home and make beds; or what you do; work to please God. Make the bed to please God, then nothing but the highest will come to you. There ll be nothing standing in the way, in the way of attachments, to prevent the flow of God s great consciousness through you in a conscious way. Realize that. That s the surest way is to work. Make the money to please God, and take care of Him, His children, also.
So, just like our bodies have the different parts, and they all work together, so our lives have these different parts. And when they work together, and are balanced, then we have, as the Master says, the balanced life; all- round development, and then we are truly God s children. And so, a practical way to set in motion the law of abundance, if you really...if you already have not done so I m sure that most of you have is to regularly, and daily, meditate, and contact God. That s the important thing. We must regularly meditate, and contact God. Because by so doing, we attain God communion. That s your greatest insurance. God is the greatest insurance policy. And, if you contact Him, you immediately set up a spiritual estate, which nothing can equal. The moment you contact God understand this in your meditations, no matter if it seems just a little slim contact never mind. If you hear the Cosmic Sound; if you see the Cosmic Light; if you feel God s Love in your heart; you have made the contact; you have immediately created within yourselves a spiritual estate. In this worldly existence we create a material estate by various means. Sometimes we re left the money. Other times we take out insurance. But the estate is there to protect you. And so with spiritual things. You can make the same estate on the spiritual side by contacting God. Now, you say Well...perhaps I
have to wait and work...meditate years before I get that estate. No. The moment you contact God, the moment you make up your mind, and within your heart you feel that you want God and contact Him, you have made up that spiritual estate. Right then. Now the scriptures attest to this, and there s one verse I like to read, and I never tire of reading it. And it is in Daniel, the 10 th Chapter, the 12 th verse, Fear not, Daniel, for from the first day that thou didst set thine heart to understand, and to chasten thyself before thy God, thy words were heard, and I am come for thy words. Isn t that abundance? Isn t that, doesn t that mean that the moment you set your heart to know God, and then do something about it, meditate regularly, get the contact, right then, it says, God has come to you? You ve created within yourselves a spiritual estate, and nobody can take it away from you. Nobody can disturb it. So realize, realize, God is your greatest insurance policy. He s the greatest thing that you can have, because all things come from Him. Make the contact by regular, and daily meditation. Keep the contact, and do not doubt God. This is spiritual law. We read in the scriptures, all scriptures, from the Vedas to our Bible, and our Master s teachings, these eternal truths. Make the contact with God. Why not trust Him? Why not trust God? He gives us everything; all things we have; those near and dear
to us; our existence is because of Him. Why not trust Him? Then we will have all abundance. Then we will fulfill the requisites of the law of abundance. Now also pray to God in secret. When you make the contact with God in secret, he will not answer you. He won t say, Well here. I ll give you the money now, you ll be alright. No. He won t say that at all. Make the contact in secret, following what we read in the scriptures. Meaning...meaning business with God. Feel His presence. Make the contact, and He will answer you openly, and you will see His hand working. You will see things come to you which you need. You will realize that the law of abundance is something real, and tangible, and that you are fulfilling the requisites necessary for its operation. Understand that. Pray to God in secret. But like planting a seed, don t begin...don t dig up the seed to see if it s growing. But it takes that faith in God, and the realization that when you contact Him He hears you, and He will answer you, and give you all things that you need. You will see His hand working, without question of a doubt. He will not forget His devotee, and those that love Him. That s one thing He has not got, is your love. He wants that. He has everything else, universe upon universe, but not your love. He wants that. Don t you think you should trust Him enough to give it to Him, and receive abundance?
And so, finally, be in business with, and for God. Be in business with, and for God. I remember back home...there was a politician back in Massachusetts, and he was a smart politician. And he was the governor of the state, he was a senator and he...someone asked him So-and-so, how, what do you attribute your success to as a politician? He said these words, and we can apply those to this law of abundance. He said, "Politics is a business, and that s my business. And so, let us apply that. Attaining God is a business, and let us make that our business. Let us make the contact by regular and daily meditation, and then we will know all that s necessary. God will work through us, and give us the things which we need. And so, if you re in business with, and for God, ask Him. Ask Him to give you the necessary things for those who depend upon you, and those near and dear to you, and also to give you the happiness, which you must have. Don t think that necessary things will satisfy you. You must have that happiness. You must have the Peace and Bliss of the soul to have abundance. You may have all things you need, but not that. You will not be satisfied. So ask God to give you those two things: the necessary things for those who depend upon you, and above all, to give you that happiness, which you must have, and which comes by knowing that you are one with Him, and that He is with you, and is watching over you, and that finally that there is no difference
between your consciousness, and His Consciousness. Do that. And above all, ask Him, ask God not to let delusion overtake you. This is the greatest danger. Ask Him not to let delusion overtake you, that will take away your consciousness of Him. Your consciousness of Him is so important. And if you lose that, you lose your greatest benefactor. God is the greatest thing we can have. We can have plenty of money, and property, and such things. We may lose it like that [Doctor snaps his fingers]. But, if we have God, we have the greatest Thing. Remember, God is our greatest Benefactor. Have Him, and you ll have all the abundance you need. No matter what you do, where you are, if God is with you, you have abundance. And finally, whatever material and spiritual riches He gives you, utilize those to serve Him, and His children. You cannot fail. Whatever He gives you, don t be afraid to help others. Utilize that to serve God, to please God, and to serve His children. You cannot fail. And all things will be added unto you, even eternal life, which is the greatest abundance. What good is a little money in this existence? What good is a little property in this existence, if we do not have God, and know we are eternally going to be with Him? You will not be satisfied. Understand that.
And so, do that. You will have, as I have said, even eternal life. Why? Because you trust Him. That s all. I will keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed in Thee, because he trusteth in Thee. So that s the law of abundance, is to make the contact with God. Having made it, trust in God. Do not oscillate. Then God will never let you down. He will never let you go. As the [Bhagavad] Gita says, He who loses sight of Me, I never lose sight of him. Now you can keep sight of God by being in contact with the Holy Ghost, the Holy Vibration, the great Comforter of which Jesus spoke, by following the techniques, which have been left to you by God, through the channel of the Master. Having that, you will have abundance, and all things. And, I ll close by reading excerpts from two letters, which the Master wrote to me quite some time ago. I know you ll enjoy them. Apply them to the subject this morning, The Law of Abundance. First, he says about freedom. Freedom is a factor in abundance. If you have all things, but are not free, you haven t abundance. And so he has written this: Financial freedom can bring spiritual freedom only to those who are constantly trying to be spiritually free, and are on the watch. Otherwise financial freedom is the cause of bondage, the harbinger of all false happiness and sense pleasure. Is that the abundance you want? No. You want that spiritual freedom along with the
financial freedom, and if you ve got to sacrifice one, sacrifice the financial freedom, attain the spiritual freedom of the presence of God. Then he says, A certain amount of worries...a certain amount of worries, if they don t get too fresh, he wrote, are stimulants to our soul. Well, we all agree with that, if it doesn t come too hard. Then he goes on, Besides, Dear One, financial freedom...besides financial freedom, other freedoms have to be sought... This is the mistake we make. Freedom from disease, accidents, misfortune, separation, and lastly death... Those are the things we must be free from to have abundance. You have to work fast. Of course, he says, financial freedom plays an important part, and spiritual freedom plays the most important part, for then you are free even though in a cage. Stone walls and disease do not a prison make, nor iron bars a cage, minds innocent, God protected, take that for a heaven, a hermitage. And finally one other letter. He says, realize that, lay up abundance in heaven, that s the greatest thing. This life is short. Sometimes it seems long, but in God s great consciousness it s a moment. And so he says about abundance in heaven, these wonderful words. He says, Be not afraid, child of eternal lightning... We re light, we re made of light. We re not this body that seems so real. In your meditation you will see the Light of God. And,
if you persevere, and penetrate the Light at the Christ center, you will see the all-comprehensive Light of the Infinite. So he says, Be not afraid, child of eternal lightening. March on with unperturbed steady steps, elbowing through a million darknesses. Why, what is the body? What is this passing show? Soon they are gone. But the candles that you are lighting and burning in your Father s house will show you your path here and hereafter. {Daily meditations}
