TORAH, GOD'S INSTRUCTIONS GENESIS 19 - GOD RESCUES LOT FROM SODOM GENESIS 20 - ABRAHAM AND ABIMELECH Say - Welcome to Sabbath School class. Let's bow our head and ask God for understanding as we continue to study the great story of Abraham, Lot and King Abimelech. Genesis 19 Say - In verses 1-5 below, Lot meets the two angels/men, Genesis 18:2, 16. Also God did not consider Lot an evil person. Here is what the Bible tells us, " 6 And turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrha into ashes condemned them with an overthrow, making them an ensample unto those that after should live ungodly; 7 And delivered just (righteous) Lot, vexed (distressed)with the filthy conversation (conduct) of the wicked" 2 Peter 2:6-7. 1 And there came two angels to Sodom at even (two of the three from Genesis 18:2, 16 there they were called "three men" who were commissioned by God to do judgment on Sodom); and Lot sat in the gate of Sodom (means flaming, burning, this also shows that Lot was a real citizen of Sodom): and Lot seeing them rose up to meet them; and he bowed himself with his face toward the ground (Lot understood it was God); 2And he said, Behold now, my lords, turn in, I pray you, into your servant's house (in contrast, remember Abraham dwelt in a tent declaring this was not his home), and tarry all night, and wash your feet, and ye shall rise up early, and go on your ways. And they said, Nay; but we will abide in the street all night (didn't have streets, they would just pitch their tents and sleep outside). 3And he pressed upon them greatly; and they turned in unto him, and entered into his house; and he made them a feast, and did bake unleavened bread, and they did eat (kind of like today's fast food). 4But before they lay down, the men of the city (Josephus says were rapists), even the men of Sodom, compassed the house round, both old and young, all the people from every quarter: 5And they called unto Lot, and said unto him, Where are the men which came in to thee this night? bring them out unto us, that we may know them. Say - Verses 6-9 below, Lot objects to showing them the visitors, he says, 6 And Lot went out at the door unto them, and shut the door after him, 7 And said, I pray you, brethren, do not so wickedly. 8 Behold now, I have two daughters which have not known man; let me, I pray you, bring them out unto you, and do ye to them as is good in your eyes: only unto these men do nothing; for therefore came they under the

shadow of my roof. 9 And they said, Stand back. And they said again, This one fellow came in to sojourn, and he will needs be a judge: now will we deal worse with thee, than with them. And they pressed sore upon the man, even Lot, and came near to break the door (break the door). Say - Verses 10-13 is the protection of Lot and the announcement of the destruction of Sodom. 0 But the men put forth their hand, and pulled Lot into the house to them, and shut to the door. 11 And they (the two angels/men) smote the men that were at the door of the house with blindness, both small and great: so that they wearied (could not find the door) themselves to find the door (the blindness was from God). 12 And the men said unto Lot, Hast thou here any besides? son in law, and thy sons, and thy daughters, and whatsoever thou hast in the city, bring them out of this place: 13 For we will destroy this place (we are about to destroy Sodom), because the cry of them is waxen great before the face of the LORD; and the LORD hath sent us to destroy it (Remember these two were God's angels or messengers. The Bible tells us, " 7 Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication (the outcome of pride), and going after strange flesh (bestiality which is from a different nature than mankind), are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire (from God)" Jude 7.). 14 And Lot went out, and spake unto his sons in law, which married his daughters, and said, Up, get you out of this place; for the LORD will destroy this city. But he seemed as one that mocked unto his sons in law (Remember Lot chose to pitch his tent towards Sodom and made his home there so when he finally made a stand for God nobody wanted to listen to him and thought he was "mocking".). Say - Verses 15-17 below, God is merciful to Lot. 15 And when the morning arose, then the angels hastened Lot, saying, Arise, take thy wife, and thy two daughters, which are here; lest thou be consumed in the iniquity (judgment) of the city. 16 And while he lingered (Lot "lingered" because he was thinking, I am going to lose all this land), the men laid hold upon his hand, and upon the hand of his wife, and upon the hand of his two daughters (they had to force him to bring him out); the LORD being merciful unto him: and they brought him forth, and set him without the city. Say - God gave Lot three commands and God tells us the same today, get out of Babylon., 17 And it came to pass, when they had brought them forth abroad, that he said, (1.) Escape for thy life; (2.) look not behind thee (don't go back in mind or thought even), (3.) neither stay thou in all the plain; escape to the mountain, lest thou be consumed (Go now, no ifs ands or buts! God gave Lot time to tell his family and then he was to get out of Babylon/Sodom). Say - Verses 18-20 below, Lot talks with God.

18And Lot said unto them, Oh, not so, my LORD (Lot is still trying to stick around Sodom instead of total obedience): 19 Behold now, thy servant hath found grace in thy sight, and thou hast magnified thy mercy, which thou hast shewed unto me in saving my life; and I cannot escape to the mountain, lest some evil take me, and I die (totally forgets God is protecting him; don't let this happen to us): 20 Behold now, this city is near to flee unto, and it is a little one: Oh, let me escape thither, (is it not a little one?) and my soul shall live (Lot asks God can't I just go to this city instead of the mountain or can't I get by with just a little sin but it doesn't work that way with God; we must come out of sin and walk away from it). Say - Verses 21-26 God's consent with Lot and the destruction of Sodom. 21 And he said unto him, See, I have accepted thee concerning this thing also, that I will not overthrow this city (the little city), for the which thou hast spoken. 22 Haste thee, escape thither; for I cannot do anything till thou be come thither (God is going to wait until Lot comes out). Therefore the name of the city was called Zoar (means little or smallness). 23 The sun was risen upon the earth when Lot entered into Zoar. 24Then the LORD rained (not water but fire) upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the LORD out of heaven (shows God's power, glory and majesty); 25 And he overthrew those cities, and all the plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which grew upon the ground. 26 But his wife looked back (She had salvation but lost it and went back with intentions of staying for she longed to stay) from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt. 27And Abraham gat up early in the morning (was still in Mamre) to the place where he stood before the LORD (it was a sleepless night for Abraham for he knew what was going to happen): 28 And he looked toward Sodom and Gomorrah (with grief), and toward all the land of the plain, and beheld, and, lo, the smoke of the country went up as the smoke of a furnace (Abraham only saw the smoke, there was no city for God is a "consuming fire" Deuteronomy 9:3 to the wicked and He will again in the tribulation when He returns, Isaiah 13:19.). 29 And it came to pass, when God destroyed the cities of the plain, that God remembered Abraham, and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow, when he overthrew the cities in the which Lot dwelt (The ultimate reason why God delivered Lot was because of the righteousness of Abraham and his prayers for Lot's safety and God would keep the oath which He had sworn unto your fathers...deuteronomy 7:8). 30And Lot went up out of Zoar, and dwelt in the mountain, and his two daughters with him; for he feared to dwell in Zoar: and he dwelt in a cave, he and his two daughters (The Bible does not tell us why he did not go to Abraham, his uncle.). 31 And the firstborn said unto the younger, Our father is old, and there is not a man in the earth to come in unto us after the manner of all the earth:

32 Come, let us make our father drink wine (Where did they get wine? They used to harvest grapes and make wine and preserve it in caves so maybe this is how they had wine), and we will lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father (preserve the bloodline). 33And they made their father drink wine that night: and the firstborn went in, and lay with her father; and he perceived not when she lay down, nor when she arose. 34And it came to pass on the morrow, that the firstborn said unto the younger, Behold, I lay yesternight with my father: let us make him drink wine this night also; and go thou in, and lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father. 35And they made their father drink wine that night also: and the younger arose, and lay with him; and he perceived not when she lay down, nor when she arose. 36 Thus were both the daughters of Lot with child by their father. 37 And the first born bare a son, and called his name Moab (Moab means from father): the same is the father of the Moabites unto this day (remember the "Moabites" for future study; they were from Lot and his daughters. Also remember Ruth was a Moabitess woman who married Boaz and they begat Obed, Obed begat Jesse and Jesse begat David and from this came Matthan who begat Jacob and Jacob begat Joseph, husband of Mary, and the adopted father of Jesus, of whom was born Jesus who is called Christ the Annointed, Matthew 1:5-6, 15-16.). 38And the younger, she also bare a son, and called his name Benammi (means the son of my people): the same is the father of the children of Ammon unto this day (remember the "Ammonites" for future study for they were from an Lot and one of his daughters). Genesis 20 Say - This is the chapter of Abraham's sojourn in Gerar or the southern border of Canaan where it was very rich and well-watered pasture land for his cattle and flocks. 1And Abraham journeyed from thence toward the south country, and dwelled between Kadesh and Shur, and sojourned in Gerar (Remember God was leading Abraham so God inspired Abraham to leave this place). 2And Abraham said of Sarah his wife, She is my sister: and Abimelech king of Gerar sent, and took Sarah (to be one of his wives, but we will see God intervened, read on). 3But God came to Abimelech in a dream by night, and said to him, Behold, thou art but a dead man, for the woman which thou hast taken; for she is a man's wife

(Remember the Law of God said if you take another man's wife you'll die, see verses 4, 7 below). 4 But Abimelech had not come near her: and he said, LORD, wilt thou slay also a righteous nation (Abimelech thought God would slay the entire nation as He had done Sodom)? 5 Said he not unto me, She is my sister? and she, even she herself said, He is my brother: in the integrity of my heart and innocency of my hands have I done this (The Bible tells us " 13 When they (Abraham, Isaac and Jacob) went from one nation to another, from one kingdom to another people; 14 He suffered no man to do them wrong: yea, he reproved kings for their sakes" Psalms 105:13-14). 6 And God said unto him in a dream, Yea, I know that thou didst this in the integrity of thy heart; for I also withheld thee from sinning against me: therefore suffered I thee not to touch her (God had intervened). 7Now therefore restore the man his wife; for he is a prophet (God's spokesman because "Abraham obeyed my voice, and kept my charge, my commandments, my statues and my laws" Genesis 26:5), and he shall pray for thee, and thou shalt live: and if thou restore her not, know thou that thou shalt surely die, thou, and all that are thine. 8 Therefore Abimelech rose early in the morning, and called all his servants, and told all these things in their ears: and the men were sore afraid. 9Then Abimelech called Abraham, and said unto him, What hast thou done unto us? and what have I offended thee, that thou hast brought on me and on my kingdom a great sin? thou hast done deeds unto me that ought not to be done. 10And Abimelech said unto Abraham, What sawest thou, that thou hast done this thing? 11And Abraham said, Because I thought, Surely the fear of God is not in this place; and they will slay me for my wife's sake (Satan had put fear and deception into Abraham's mind and Abraham had put a stumbling block in front of the spiritually blind; he should have been honest for God would have protected him.). 12 And yet indeed she is my sister; she is the daughter of my father, but not the daughter of my mother; and she became my wife (Sarah was Abraham's half sister). 13 And it came to pass, when God caused me to wander from my father's house, that I said unto her, This is thy kindness which thou shalt shew unto me; at every place whither we shall come, say of me, He is my brother. 14And Abimelech took sheep, and oxen, and menservants, and womenservants, and gave them unto Abraham, and restored him Sarah his wife.

15And Abimelech said, Behold, my land is before thee: dwell where it pleaseth thee. 16And unto Sarah he said, Behold, I have given thy brother a thousand pieces of silver: behold, he is to thee a covering of the eyes (shut your eyes to the evil I have done), unto all that are with thee, and with all other: thus she was reproved. 17So Abraham prayed unto God: and God healed Abimelech, and his wife, and his maidservants; and they bare children. 18For the LORD (Jehovah) had fast closed up all the wombs of the house of Abimelech, because of Sarah Abraham's wife. MEMORY VERSE Then the LORD rained (not water but fire) upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the LORD out of heaven. GENESIS 19:24 SABBATH SCHOOL LESSON FOR TOTS BELOW

SODOM AND GOMORRAH TWO EVIL CITIES WERE SODOM AND GOMORRAH AND THEY WERE LOCATED ON THE SOUTH END OF THE DEAD SEA; ABRAHAM'S NEPHEW, LOT, LIVED IN SODOM BUT BOTH CITIES WERE FILLED WITH PRIDE WHICH GOD HATES YOU SEE. SODOM AND GOMORRAH WERE LIKE BABYLON, THEY WERE BLESSED WITH MANY GOOD THINGS AND RICH FERTILE SOIL WHICH PRODUCED AN ABUNDANCE OF FOOD; THE PEOPLE OF SODOM AND GOMORRAH WERE BLESSED WITH AN ABUNDANCE OF TIME AND WERE "PUFFED UP" WITH TOO MANY GOODS. PRIDE FOR THE PEOPLE OF SODOM AND GOMORRAH MADE THEM HEARTLESS AND CRUEL THEY LACKED FEELINGS FOR ONE ANOTHER AND WOULD NOT HELP THE POOR AND NEEDY; THE PEOPLE LUSTED AFTER FALSE GODS AND WORSHIPPED IDOLS, FORGOT GOD'S LAWS AND PERSECUTED GOD'S PEOPLE. THEREFORE "GOD TOOK THEM AWAY AS HE SAW GOOD" BY A FIERY SHOWER FOR THEIR PUNISHMENT OF SINNERS IN THE CITIES OF SODOM AND GOMORRAH; BUT BECAUSE OF ABRAHAM'S RIGHTEOUSNESS, GOD SAVED LOT, HIS TWO DAUGHTERS AND LOT'S WIFE. UNFORTUNATELY LOT'S WIFE LOOKED BACK WITH A YEARNING TO STAY AND SHE WAS TURNED INTO A PILLAR OF SALT. ALWAYS REMEMBER SODOM AND GOMORRAH ARE LIKE MODERN DAY BABYLON OF WHICH GOD DOES NOT WANT US TO BE A PART OF THEIR SIN OF ANY KIND; AS GOD DESTROYED SODOM AND GOMORRAH SO GOD WILL DESTROY MODERN DAY BABYLON WITH DEATH, AND FAMINE AND WITH FIRE. REVELATION 18, 2 PETER 2:6 BY B. R. B.
