February 1, 2015 Preparation for Worship Sunday Early Service Prelude Oh, How Good It Is Oh, how good it is when the family of God dwells together in spirit, in faith and unity; where the bonds of peace, of acceptance and love are the fruit of his presence here among us. So with one voice we ll sing to the Lord, and with one heart we ll live out his Word, till the whole earth sees the Redeemer has come, for he dwells in the presence of his people. Oh, how good it is on this journey we share to rejoice with the happy and weep with those who mourn; for the weak find strength, the afflicted find grace when we offer the blessing of belonging. Oh, how good it is to embrace his command to prefer one another, forgive as he forgives. When we live as one, we all share in the love of the Son with the Father and the Spirit. Words and Music by Keith and Kristyn Getty, Ross Holmes, and Stuart Townend. A Call to Worship Call to Worship Sing to the LORD a new song, for he has done marvelous things; his right hand and his holy arm have worked salvation for him. The LORD has made his salvation known and revealed his righteousness to the nations. He has remembered his love and his faithfulness to the house of Israel; all the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God. Shout for joy to the LORD, all the earth, burst into jubilant song with music; make music to the LORD with the harp, with the harp and the sound of singing, with trumpets and the blast of the ram s horn shout for joy before the LORD, the King. Psalm 98:1-6 Invocation The Welcome of God Worship in Praise Come, Ye Sinners Come, ye sinners, poor and wretched, weak and wounded, sick and sore; Jesus, ready, stands to save you, full of pity, joined with power. He is able, he is able; he is willing; doubt no more. Come ye needy, come, and welcome, God s free bounty glorify; True belief and true repentance, every grace that brings you nigh. Without money, without money come to Jesus Christ and buy. Come, ye weary, heavy laden, bruised and broken by the fall; If you tarry til you re better, you will never come at all. Not the righteous, not the righteous; sinners Jesus came to call.
Let not conscience make you linger, nor of fitness fondly dream; All the fitness he requireth is to feel your need of him. This he gives you, this he gives you, tis the Spirit s rising beam. Upon a Life I Did Not Live Upon a life I have not lived, upon a death I did not die; Another s life, another s death, I stake my whole eternity. Not on the tears which I have shed, not on the sorrows I have known; Another s tears, another s griefs, on these I rest, on these alone. O Jesus, Son of God, I rest on what thy cross has done for me; There both my life and death I read, my guilt, and pardon there I see. Lord, I believe; O deal with me, as one who has thy Word believed! I take the gift, Lord, look on me, I take the gift as one who has thy gift received. O Jesus, Son of God, I rest on what thy cross has done for me; There both my life and death I read, my guilt, and pardon there I see. O Jesus, Son of God, I rest on what thy cross has done for me; There both my life and death I read, my guilt, and pardon there I see. Lord, I believe; Words by Horatius Bonar. Alternate words by Kevin Twit. Music by Kevin Twit. Worship in Confession & Repentance Prayer of Corporate Confession Dear friends, let us love one another, because love comes from God. Whoever loves is a child of God and knows God. Jesus Christ, life of the world and of all creation, forgive our separation and grant us peace and unity. The peace that Christ gives is to guide us in the decisions we make, for it is to this peace that God has called us together into one body. Jesus Christ, life of the world and of all creation, forgive our separation and grant us peace and unity. With his own body he broke down the walls of separation. By his death on the cross Christ destroyed our divisions. Jesus Christ, life of the world and of all creation, forgive our separation and grant us peace and unity. Worship Sourcebook S.2.2.5. Based on Ephesians 2:14-22; 4:3-6; Colossians 3:15; 1 John 4:7. Silent Confession
Assurance of Pardon You are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God s own people, in order that you may proclaim the mighty acts of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. Once you were not a people, but now you are God s people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. People of God, all of us together have received God s mercy in Christ. In Christ we are forgiven, redeemed, and made to be a community united in faith. Thanks be to God. Worship Sourcebook S.2.4. Based on 1 Peter 2:9-10, NRSV. Gracious Spirit, Dwell With Me Gracious Spirit, dwell with me, I would gracious be; help me now thy grace to see, I would be like thee; and, with words that help and heal, thy life would mine reveal; and, with actions bold and meek, for Christ, my Savior, speak. Truthful Spirit, dwell with me, I would truthful be; help me now thy truth to see, I would be like thee; and, with wisdom kind and clear, thy life in mine appear; and, with actions brotherly, speak Christ s sincerity. Holy Spirit, dwell with me, I would holy be; show thy mercy tenderly, make me more like thee; separate from sin, I would and cherish all things good, and whatever I can be give him who gave me thee. Mighty Spirit, dwell with me, I would mighty be; help me now thy pow r to see, I would be like thee; gainst all weapons hell can wield, be thou my strength and shield; let thy Word my weapon be, Lord, thine the victory. Gracious Spirit, dwell with me, I would be like thee! Music by K.Lee Scott. Children ages 4 - K5 may be dismissed to Worship Center following the choral response. Worship in the Preaching & Hearing of the Word Scripture Reading Ephesians 2:11-22 (page 976-977) Sermon Peace on Earth But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. For he himself is our peace, who has made us both one and has broken down in his flesh the dividing wall of hostility. Ephesians 2:13-14
Giving of Tithes and Offerings The Church s One Foundation The church s one foundation is Jesus Christ, her Lord; she is his new creation by water and the Word. From heaven he came and sought her to be his holy bride; with his own blood he bought her, and for her life he died. Elect from every nation, yet one o er all the earth, her charter of salvation, one Lord, one faith, one birth; one holy name she blesses, partakes one holy food, and to one hope she presses, with every grace endued. The church shall never perish! Her dear Lord to defend, to guide, sustain, and cherish, is with her to the end; though there be those that hate her, and false sons in her pale, against all foe or traitor she ever shall prevail. Yet she on earth hath union with God the Three in One, and mystic sweet communion with those whose rest is won; O happy ones and holy! Lord give us grace that we, like them, the meek and lowly, on high may dwell with thee. Words by Samuel Stone. Music by Brian Moss. Peace on Earth Ephesians 2:11-22 February 1, 2015 The first ten verses of Ephesians 2 are all about making right our relationship with God. We saw last week that such an outcome was initiated by God, since our spiritual deadness rendered us completely unable to do anything about our condition. Paul moves this week from the vertical to the horizontal, from talking about the reconciliation of our relationship with God to the reconciliation of our relationships with one another. He is talking about how the universal desire for peace on earth actually comes about. God s prescription for peace on earth can be comprehended under three points. I. The Cause of a Lack of Peace v. 11-12 II. The Bringer of Peace v. 13-18 III. The Community of Peace v. 19-22
