St. Michael s Episcopal Church Weekly Newsletter Grosse Pointe Woods, MI April 2, 2017 Interim Rector - Father Ed Hunt Evening prayer during Holy Week Morning and Evening Prayer were originally conceived in the Book of Common Prayer as the primary services for each day, including Sunday. It is based on a monastic practice of keeping the hours. Thomas Cranmer, ever the monastic, incorporated Morning and Evening prayer ( Matins and Vespers ) as the standard form of worship for the Church in England. Those days have passed. We are now a Eucharistically centered church, and the practice of saying Morning and Evening Prayer is out of fashion. It is important for us to remember and participate in this devotional practice. With that in mind, I will offer Evening Prayer to the members of St. Michael s during Holy Week. Evening Prayer Rite II will be said on Monday and Wednesday of Holy Week, and Rite I Evening prayer will be said on Tuesday of Holy Week. We will assemble for prayer at 6:00 PM. I hope to see you there Easter Services The Easter Season planning is in full swing as we approach Holy Week. Here are the service times: 8:00 a.m. & 10:30 a.m. Evening Prayer- Mon, Tues, Wed 6:00 p.m. Maundy Thursday 6:30 p.m. (Foot Washing, Agape Dinner & Stripping of the Altar) Good Friday 12 Noon & 7:00 p.m. Easter Vigil 7:00 p.m. Easter 8:00 a.m. & 10:30 a.m. Overnight Vigil Keepers Thursday, April 13 th Anyone who would like to participate in the overnight vigil, can sign up in the information center. There are a few times still available. ECW Coffee Hour, April 9 th The Episcopal Church Women will be hosting a coffee hour after the 8:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. service. Hot cross buns will also be served. Please join us on this special day in Yeoman Hall.

A Note from The Little Thrift Shop The Thrift Shop is in need of tools to sell. Today, Sunday, April 2 nd we are asking everyone to bring one or two tools. Bring us your old, new, used, unused duplicates or seldom used tools. Your donations will be greatly appreciated. A box will be outside of Parish Office for drop off. The Thrift Shop will continue to be open the 4 th Sunday of each month after both services. Dates are as follows: April 23 rd, May 28 th, and June 25 th. Spring Cleanup Saturday, May 5th Spring is the time for the annual Church cleanup. Please bring your rakes, and misc. garden tools to help spruce up the outdoors! The rain date is May 13 th. A third book we will discuss is Yesterday, I Cried by Iyanla Vanzant. We have not yet chosen a date for this book discussion. Further, Richard Simonds has offered to lead a summer series entitled Christianity and World Religions: Wrestling with Questions People Ask. The series is authored by Adam Hamilton. Bryan Thompson suggested this program for St. Michael's, and it will be an excellent and interesting program - for sure. We do not have the exact dates for Christianity and World Religions but Richard Simonds is thinking of holding the class every other Thursday evening at 7:00 pm, starting in early June. Last summer's series on The Prophets followed this time and pace and it worked out well. We have good programs and discussions ahead. Feel free to invite anyone you like to come along. The Spiritual Journey Programs are open to everyone. NEW from Kroger Community Rewards As of 3/22/2016 Kroger will be suspending the re-enrollment process from the program for this year. This means members will NOT need to re-enroll their Kroger Plus card to continue to earn for the charity they have chosen. If for any reason a member does re-enroll they will just continue to earn as they were. As always new members will be able to join the program at any time. Book Group from Spiritual Journey May 6 th & June 17 th & Summer Series On Saturday, May 6th at 10:00 a.m. we will discuss Searching for Sunday by Rachel Held Evans. On Saturday, June 17th at 10:00 am we will be discussing Ordinary Grace by William Kent Krueger. All members who would like to START earning and join Kroger Community Rewards for St. Michael s must sign up by going to www.krogercommunity rewards.com. This is a great way to earn money for the church as well as earn gas points and savings for you! Participants must have a valid online account at Kroger.com and must sign up online. Anyone who has questions signing up contact Karen McCarthy at 313-505-0996.

Diocese News Online Presence in Churches One of the items to come out of the 2012 General Convention in Indianapolis was a resolution prodding all churches to get online in various forms. This included useful (and up-to-date) websites and a social media presence. St. Michael s online presence is through our Website, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.
