FAITH UNITED METHODIST CHURCH Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother when he sins against me? Up to seven times? Jesus answered, I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven. Matthew 18:21-22 (NRSV) At that point Peter got up the nerve to ask, Master, how many times do I forgive a brother or sister who hurts me? Seven? Jesus replied, Seven! Hardly. Try seventy times seven. (from The Message) On Forgiveness Why is it we love the idea that Christ forgives us? Why is it so easy, to go easy on ourselves when we want it, need it, seek it from Christ or others? Why can t others just forgive us and let it go? Why do they have to keep bringing it up, reminding us, reminding others, when they have said they forgive us? Why is it so hard when we need to forgive others? Why do we think it would be easier to forgive someone if they would just prove to us they are truly sorry for what they have done to offend or hurt us- as if they could ever prove that enough to satisfy and ease our wound? The answer Jesus gave to Peter, I am sure, is not what he wanted to hear. I have a feeling Peter felt he was going far above and beyond the norm in extending forgiveness seven times. But Jesus response seems to reveal the reality that forgiveness is seldom quick and easy, or that we are all too ready to forgive a few token times and then jettison forgiveness for revenge. Seldom is forgiveness a one-time snap-of-the-finger choice by us that leads to total release. Sometimes the hurts go so deep they may require a forgiveness that lasts a lifetime; repeatedly turning to God to help us forgive again and again and again. Praise God when forgiveness comes quick and is lasting! But even healed wounds leave scars that can trigger reminders of the pain, dredge up anger, bitterness, and resentment. Lack of forgiveness has a way of spilling over as we dump and spread some of it on others. It can be contagious. I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven. Hard words Jesus. Hard words. But thank you. Lord Jesus, keep us on course, until the matter is settled within our hearts. We have experienced the taste of freedom true forgiveness brings. Thank you Jesus! Thank you! The taste is so sweet and the burden lifted so liberating! We know that when we lack forgiveness we are the ones who suffer most. Bitterness, self righteous anger and resentment eat away at our heart, mind and soul and weigh us down. Our vision gets clouded and we forget that we too are in constant need of the same forgiveness. Sometimes we forget that forgiveness may not be so much for LOVING GOD, SERVING OUR NEIGHBORS Phone: 419-447-6748 Email: office@tiffinfaith.org Website: tiffinfaith.org them, as it is for us. We all stand before you. Forgive. Not seven times, but seventy-seven. Thanks be to God for your never ending grace and mercy. Grace & peace, Pastor Jeff Small Group to begin August 28 If you make my word your home you will indeed be my disciples John 8:31 Disciple Bible Study I: Becoming Disciples Through Bible Studyled by Pastor Jeff On Sunday July 10, a signup sheet will be available. DISCIPLE is a program of disciplined Bible study aimed at developing strong Christian leaders. It is a 34 week long survey of the bible covering Genesis to Revelation with equal emphasis on the Old and New Testaments. This study requires reading significant portions of scripture each day. A participant s book will guide the daily readings and reflections as well as provide scholarly insights on the texts. Key biblical theme words; theme verses; and major persons, events and topics will be discussed each week in a two hour session. This bible survey will follow the basic chronological movement of the biblical story emphasizing the wholeness of the Bible as a revelation of God. Brief video segments will initiate the meetings discussion. What can you expect? To encounter the grace of God and be renewed, strengthened, challenged and mature in faith and service. You will become more familiar and comfortable with the bible and develop your daily devotional life. You will experience what it is like to be a part of a group of fellow disciples encouraging one another in daily reading and weekly sharing. You will gain insights through group sessions when we search the scripture together in a focused setting. The list could go on. This is for adults of all ages and for those new to or familiar with the scriptures. This would be a great study to invite a friend too! Three informational meetings will be held so you can come and find out more about what this 34 week study will entail. The first will be during the Sunday School hour (9:15) on July 17, the second on Wednesday July 20 at 10:00a.m. and the third on Sunday July 31 at 2:00p.m. Please come and find out more about what our weekly sessions will be like, review the materials more closely, and ask questions. The cost of the study is $39 for the Participants Guide. $30 of the cost will be covered by the church, so your cost is only $9. If you are unable to afford the $9 see Pastor Jeff. We believe this study is so important we don t want the cost to hinder anyone s participation. At this time a Sunday afternoon session will be offered from 2:00-4:00p.m. beginning August 28. An additional or alternative day and time will be considered if there is interest. We need at least 6-8 people for a session. Child care will be provided. A sample of the participants guide will be available during signup. Last day for sign up is Sunday August 7. Questions? Contact Pastor Jeff and also check out the Disciple Bible Study series at Cokesbury.com.

Summer Camp I m excited to say we have at this time seven young people registered for camp. One has just recently finished and the other six will be going in July. We are asking for your help to provide the much needed clothes and food items and non -food items. Copies of the wish list can be found on the table at the Mission Corner. You may take the items to the Salvation Army at 505 E. Market St. Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. or place items in the box in the Narthex. If you have large items and no way of getting them delivered you can call Linda Lonsbury at 419-447-2811. Please make sure that your food items are not out-of-date. The Salvation Army also provides lunch-time meals and can always use help, especially on Tuesdays beginning at 9:30 a.m. Call ahead to schedule date and time. We also want to thank those who have given their time and money to support our many missions these past months. God has blessed us and we must help others in their time of need. Thank you for your support. "Strength for Service to God and Country" books are at the Mission table for anyone to take and give to someone in the military or anyone who would enjoy the daily devotions that may make a difference in your outlook on life and might become your "Light" shining in the darkness". The Pilgrims Class had the honor and privilege of paying for a paver stone for Rev. H. Joe and Maxine Grimm, Rev. Marshall and Pat Peterson, Rev. Dr. Robert and Doris Buckley and Rev. C. Scott and Peggy Hayward. Thanks to the persons responsible for beginning and maintaining such a wonderful garden. We would enjoy having any adult join us as we share, learn and laugh during our 31 lessons on prayer. Books are furnished. Everybody brings something to this class. Love, Judy Munn
