TWENTY NINTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME, OCTOBER 16 TH 2016 GOSPEL SUMMARY Like a relentless child, the widow in Jesus parable wouldn t give up. She continually begged the judge for justice against her opponents. Not because the judge wanted to see justice done, but because he grew tired of the woman s pleading, he granted her request. The point Jesus wanted to make with this story is how much our loving God will answer our prayers if we persist in our asking. REFLECTION FOR FAMILIES What happens when our children pester us long enough for something? If it s not life threatening and they ve bugged us long enough, we usually find a way of giving in without losing face. We know just how the judge in Luke s Gospel felt! Let the story of the persistent widow strengthen your prayers. Even if they are not answered in just the way we ask, God hears our prayers and cares for us. BRINGING THE GOSPEL INTO YOUR FAMILY Be faithful praying with your children. Teach them simple prayers for starting their day, grace before meals, and prayers at bedtime. Say prayers every day. Here are some suggestions: A Morning Prayer: Dear God, We offer this day to you and all we think and say and do. Amen. A Table Grace: Bless us O, Lord; and these thy gifts which we are about to receive from thy bounty. Through Christ, our Lord. Amen A Bedtime Prayer: Angel of God, my guardian dear, to whom God s love commits me here. Ever this night be at my side, to light, to guard, to rule and to guide. Amen. DISCUSSION STARTERS God answered my prayer in a way that totally surprised me when... The best part of praying with my family is... I have never given up asking for... FAITH AND SCRIPTURE CLASS Our next class will be on Wed. Oct. 19, at 7:30 pm in the Parish Hall. Our discussion will be on questions 566 to 575 of the Compendium. Our Scripture consideration will be Proverbs 11. Please note that there is no class on Oct. 26. PARISH MOVIE NIGHT On Sat. Oct. 22nd we will be showing the movie, The Assisi Underground which is about the difficult and dangerous role of the Catholic Church and the people of Assisi in rescuing Italian Jews from the Nazis in 1943. The movie will be shown in the Parish Hall at 6:15 pm. The movie is free, pizza and pop will be available for $5. Donations, in advance, for the Pizza will be greatly appreciated. Please note that the Legion of Mary will have religious books available for you to borrow. NOVEMBER 6 WALKING PILGRIMAGE TO CEMETERY AND INDULGENCES Right after the 1:00 pm Mass on Sunday Nov. 6th you are invited to walk with Fr. Steven to Pine Hills Cemetery and back (4.5 km each way). November is dedicated to the Holy Souls; the faithful departed. From Nov. 1 to 8 a plenary indulgence can be gained for your departed loved ones by visiting a cemetery and offering prayers. The usual conditions for gaining a plenary indulgence apply; namely, detachment from all sin, perform the indulgenced act, sacramental confession (any time within a period of 8 days before or after), receive Holy Communion, and pray for the pope s intentions. If not fully detached from all venial sin, a partial indulgence is gained. OUR PARISH Recently subscribed to a website called www.formed.org, which is a digital gateway to some of the world's best Catholic content, teachers, and presenters. It is an excellent way to grow in your Catholic faith. You can sign up at the parish office. To cover the cost of the program, we are asking for a $5.00 donation.

WELCOME NEW PARISHIONERS We are happy you decided to worship with us today. Please introduce yourself to one of the priests following Mass in the Gathering Area in the back of the church. If you would like information about registering as a new parish member, please call the office, 416-759-9359 for a registration form. ALL PARISHIONERS SHOULD BE REGISTERED And are asked to support the parish and the needs of the Church by using Sunday Offertory Envelopes. COLLECTION COUNTERS Volunteers are needed to count the Sunday collection on Monday mornings following the 8:30 a.m. Mass and make bank deposits. Confidentiality is vital in this ministry. A time commitment of about 4 hours once a month is required. Contact Fr. Roy by email fr.roy@rogers. com or by telephone 416 759 9359 if you are interested. WORLD MISSION SUNDAY Is observed on October 23, 2016. World Mission Sunday is a day set aside for the Catholic Church throughout the world to publicly renew its commitment to the missionary movement. It was created by Pope Pius XI in 1926 as the day of prayer and propaganda of missions. Next weekend a special collection will be taken up following communion. LIFE CHAIN 2016 The Knights of Columbus wishes to thank all parishioners who attended this event on Sunday October 2 nd. This year we had approximately 150 people, despite the weather warnings. Our Life Chain, the longest in Scarborough, extended almost from Kennedy Rd to Birchmount Rd. We had our traditional group picture outside of the Church and light refreshments afterwards in the hall. The collection of funds for Campaign Life Coalition was better this year compared to the previous year.

OCTOBER 29 TH ROSARY To end the month of October on a high note, the Knights of Columbus are organizing a Rosary prayer service. It will be on Saturday October 29 th, immediately after the 5:00 pm Mass. Participants will be provided a finger rosary. At the end of the rosary people are invited to join in the hall for light refreshments. Please plan to attend and strengthen our prayers "WEEKdays (Women Encouraging Excellence in Kids) Tutoring program is now accepting both elementary female student registrations and high school female tutor applications. WEEKdays tutoring program will be held in 2016 2017 every Monday from from 4:30 5:30 pm in the parish hall of St.Lawrence starting October 17. Inviting single Catholic men 18 years and older, to cultivate a deeper prayer life and relationship with Jesus Christ; leading to a better discernment of God s call for their lives. Time for prayer, reflection and information on the process of becoming one of Christ s disciples as a Catholic priest. Please contact (the Parish Priest ) or the Office of Vocations at: 416 968 0997; email : vocations@archtoronto.org THE ROSARY Is a powerful weapon to put the demons to flight and to keep oneself from sin If you desire peace in your hearts, in your homes, and in your country, assemble each evening to recite the Rosary. Let not even one day pass without saying it, no matter how burdened you may be with many cares and labors. Pope Pius XI THE ROSARY Is the most excellent form of prayer and the most efficacious means of attaining eternal life. It is the remedy for all our evils, the root of all our blessings. There is no more excellent way of praying.~pope Leo XIII
