(page 1) Jesus Walks on Water WHAT S THE POINT? BIBLE CONNECTION Matthew 14:22-33 (page 1046) CHARACTER WORD Confidence Trust; a feeling of assurance or certainty TEACHING OBJECTIVE I can put my confidence in Jesus power. MEMORY LINK Matthew 14:33b Truly You are the Son of God. (KBC Study Bible pg. 1046) SUPPLIES NEEDED THIS WEEK GET CONNECTED None MEMORY LINK ACTIVITY Option 1: Paper in various colors Option 2: Tape, poster boards BIBLE CONNECTION None SURF TEAM LEADER Memory Link cards, index cards, pens, Hang 10 pages MAKE-IT-STICK REVIEW GAME Option 1: Various small items, clear container, water Option 2: Paper in various colors, tape, bucket Peter had spent time with Jesus. He saw Jesus heal the sick and feed the multitudes. When he realized it was Jesus walking on the water, he eagerly climbed out of the boat and began to walk toward Him. Then, taking his eyes off of Jesus, Peter looked at the wind and waves around him and became afraid. He suddenly began to sink. Those of us who know Jesus know His power. Yet, there are times when we take our eyes off of Him and look at the troubles around us. When we focus on ourselves and only see our circumstances, we get fearful. Jesus is the Master of all. Colossians 1:15-16 says, He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. When Peter cried out for Jesus to save him, Jesus stretched out His hand immediately and saved Peter. He will reach out His hand and rescue us every time. We can put our confidence in His power. GET CONNECTED Worship Tip 10-15 10-15 Minutes Building relationships in Surf Teams; introducing today s lesson No supplies needed Use the following conversation prompts to get to know the kids in your surf team and to introduce today s lesson. Share a highlight from your week. Today we are going to learn about confidence. What does confidence mean? (Trust; a feeling of assurance or certainty) Share a time when you lacked confidence. How did it make you feel? How does it make you feel to know that you can put our confidence in Jesus power? Guide clubbers to locate and mark today s Bible connection and memory link in their Bibles so they can find the pages quickly as directed in the session. I wanna walk, I wanna talk, I wanna live in Your power. I wanna pray, I wanna stay, I wanna move in Your power. I rely on Your power to do what You want me to. I rely on Your power to do great things for You. These are the first phrases from the song, In Your Power by Lifeway Kids Worship from Amazing Wonders Aviation VBS 2012. This song would be a great choice for today s lesson on having confidence in Jesus power. You can purchase the song at lifeway.com.

MEMORY LINK Teaching a Bible verse to clubbers; helping them to memorize the verse No supplies needed Focus on the Bible Ask the kids and volunteers to hold their Bibles high in the air. Explain that in these 66 books, God has preserved everything He wants us to know about Himself. In the Bible we can learn how He created the world and how He made a plan to rescue us by sending His Son, Jesus. In the Bible we can read about how Jesus showed His power by helping others, controlling nature and how He gave His life for us. The Bible shows us how to treat God and how to treat others. The Bible truly is a great treasure! Focus on today s Memory Link Instruct the kids to open their KBC Study Bibles to Matthew, the first book of the New Testament. Guide them to turn to Matthew 14:33b (page 1046). Ask a volunteer to read the verse aloud as the others follow along. These words were spoken by Jesus disciples. They saw Jesus do something amazing and said outloud that He truly is the Son of God. Today s character word is confidence which means trust; a feeling of assurance or certainty. We can have confidence that the stories in the Bible are true. We can have confidence in Jesus and His power. Option 1 - STAND UP AND SAY Paper in various colors Hold a piece of colored paper in the air. Ask all the kids who are wearing that color to stand up and say the memory link aloud together. For example, hold up a piece of blue paper. Every child wearing the color blue will stand and recite the verse. Continue play until every child has recited the verse several times or until time runs out. Option 2 LAND, BOAT, WATER Tape, poster boards 10-15 Prepare Use the tape to make a line on the floor long enough for the kids to stand on it in single file. Ask a couple of leaders to hold a poster board and be ready to create wind by waving the poster board up and down. Call for the kids to stand on the line facing you. Explain that they are standing on land. Tell them that when you call boat, they must hop to the right of the line and when you call water, they must hop to the left of the line. When you call land, they will hop onto the line. In random sequence, call land, boat and water. Tell the kids that when they feel the wind, they must freeze and say the memory link in unison. Continue to play, pausing as the wind comes to allow the kids to recite the verse together. (page 2) Matthew 14:33b Truly You are the Son of God. (KBC Study Bible pg. 1046) Instead of using colored paper for the memory link activity, you can use a game board spinner, a colored die, or a beach ball. You could also ask the Surf Team leaders to take turns calling out colors. Feel free to use any available item to make the activity work. Use words from the story or lesson such as the character word, book of the Bible, or story character names to make a word search at www. puzzlemaker.school. discovery.com. Use the word search as an arrival activity. Allow the kids to work at their own pace or call out a word for them to locate. As they search for the word, discuss how that word relates to the lesson.

BIBLE CONNECTION Teaching today s character word through a gospel-centered Bible story 10-15 (page 3) No supplies needed Introduce the Story Pick a partner. In a moment I want you to stare at one another. You can blink, but don t look away. Are you ready? Go. Allow time for the clubbers to play for a minute or two then discuss the point of the exercise. Some of you found it easy to stay focused on your partner. Some of you were easily distracted. This was just a simple game to illustrate that sometimes it s hard to stay focused. What kinds of things distract us from the things we are supposed to be doing? What distracts us in the classroom? What distracts us at home from our chores? What distracts us from being focused on God? Today we are going to talk about a man named Peter who, when he kept his eyes on Jesus, was safe. When he got distracted and took his eyes off of Jesus, he was in danger. Jesus has power over all things. We can have confidence in His power. Matthew 14:22-24 Direct the kids to open their BIbles to Matthew 14:22 (page 1046). Guide kids to read the section heading to identify something Jesus has the power to do (walk on water). Ask a volunteer to read aloud Matthew 14:22-24 as the others follow along. Talk About It Jesus made it a priority to spend time alone with God to pray. He sent His disciples ahead of Him to travel to the other side of the sea in a boat. The wind and waves began to toss the boat around and the disciples were in danger. Raise your hand if you have ever ridden in a boat. How would you feel if you were in a boat that was being tossed around by the wind and waves? Matthew 14:25-33 Read Matthew 14:25-27 aloud. Jesus came to them walking on the water. When the disciples saw Him, they were terrified. What did they think Jesus was? They thought He was a ghost. Why do you think they thought that? Maybe because they could not imagine a person being able to walk on water. What did Jesus say to them when they cried out in fear? He said, Be of good cheer! It s me. Don t be afraid. Read Matthew 14:28-30 aloud. Peter said, Lord, if it is You, tell me to come to You on the water. Jesus stretched out His hand and said, Come. Peter jumped over the side of the boat and began walking on the water to Jesus. But suddenly a wave distracted him. Peter took his eyes off of Jesus and focused on the dangerous circumstances and then began to sink. What did Peter say? Lord, save me! Read Matthew 14:31-33 aloud. How long did Jesus wait to save Peter? Immediately Jesus reached out His hand and grabbed Peter. You of little faith, Jesus said to Peter, why did you doubt? What did Jesus mean when He told Peter he had little faith? Peter knew Jesus. He had seen Jesus perform miracles. He heard Jesus teach. He got distracted and lost focus of who Jesus was.

What happened when they got back into the boat? The wind stopped. The disciples were amazed and marveled that even the winds and waves obeyed Jesus. Jesus has power over all things. He can even walk on water! When we remember His power, it helps us to have confidence in Him. (page 4) Memory Link Review Point out today s memory link in Matthew 14:33b. The disciples worshiped Jesus and said, You really are the Son of God! They recognized who Jesus was. They said it outloud. That is what worship is - the proper perspective of who He is. Seeing Jesus walk on the water and stop the wind gave the disciples the confidence that Jesus was God s Son. Say the memory link with me. Truly You are the Son of God. Matthew 14:33b. Gospel Connection Jesus showed us His power when He fed the multitudes, walked on water and stopped the wind and waves. He showed His power when He died for us on the cross then rose again. He has power over death! He has the power to restore the relationship between us and God. Have you ever sinned? Do you choose your way instead of God s way? That sin separates us from God. There is nothing we can do in our own power to fix that problem. Only Jesus can. We must ADMIT that we sin and ask Jesus to forgive our sin. We must BELIEVE that Jesus is God s Son and that He died to pay for our sin and then rose again. We can CONFESS Him as Savior and make Him the boss of our life. Do you trust His power today? Seeing Jesus walk on the water gave the disciples the confidence that Jesus was God s Son. Do you believe that? Will you have the confidence to put your faith in Him? Invite kids wanting to know more about becoming a Christian to move to the designated counseling area to meet with a leader one one one. Application/Transition Distractions often keep you from doing what you are supposed to be doing. Peter needed to keep his eyes on Jesus. You must keep your mind on the things that are important. When you are in school, you need to focus on your work because you understand that it is important. When you are at home, you need to focus on obeying because you understand that it is important. When thinking about Jesus you can remember who Jesus is God s Son. Remembering will help you to keep your confidence in Him. Gospel Tip When talking to a child about salvation during club, you may not be able to complete the whole process or conversation in those brief moments. It s sometimes best to continue the conversation during a home visit, or by having more conversations during club over the course of a few weeks. If your church provides a salvation or baptism class for kids, be sure to invite the clubber and his or her parent.

SURF TEAM TIME Connecting with kids in small groups; applying today s Bible Connection and Character Word 5-10 (page 5) Memory Link cards, Hang 10 pages, index cards, pens Gospel Connection Before you begin, ask if there are any clubbers who would like to talk with the Bible connection Leader about praying to ask Jesus to become their forever friend. If so, let them go to the designated area. Today s Lesson What part of the story did you find the most interesting or surprising? Why do you think the disciples thought Jesus was a ghost? What did Jesus say to the disciples? (be of good cheer, it s me, don t be afraid) On the index card, guide kids to write Jesus is the Son of God. Then, on the other side of the card, ask them to write a prayer request. What was Jesus doing at the beginning of the story? (spending time alone with God) You can spend time alone with God. You can use your Hang 10 page this week. Pray Thank You, God, for the Bible that teaches us about Jesus. Thank You that He has power over all things. In His name, Amen. Use the Bible Give each child a memory link card. Review today s memory link and character word. Guide kids to use cards to mark today s story in their KBC Study Bibles. Lead them to highlight today s memory link. Hang 10 Pages Give each child a Hang 10 page. Challenge kids to hang out with God 10 minutes each day by praying and reading the Bible, using the Hang 10 page as a guide. Encourage kids to bring back their Hang 10 pages next week. Let s look at Day 2. Who would like to read Psalm 107:28-29 on page 636? God rescues us when we cry out to Him. He calms the storms. He can calm the storms in our lives as well. You can put your confidence in Jesus power. A great KBC volunteer is willing to learn - read your Bible and lesson each week. A great KBC volunteer is willing to care - care about the kids and the leaders you serve alongside. A great KBC leader is willing to give - give your time and energy. Ask God to help you be the best volunteer you can be! If you have the opportunity to talk with a child who is having trouble with obedience, use questions that build relationships such as, Does this frustrate you? Do you know why I want you to do that? What can I do to help? Avoid questions that destroy relationships such as, When are you going to learn? What were you thinking? How many times do I have to tell you?

MAKE IT STICK - REVIEW GAME Playing a game to review today s Bible Connection and Character Word Option 1 - SINK OR FLOAT Various small items, clear container, water Prepare Upon arrival at the school, fill the clear container with water. 5-10 (page 6) Ask the surf team leaders to be ready to ask the review questions and listen for the answers in their team. Call for the clubbers in each surf team to choose the sink team or the float team. From the front of the group, drop a small item into the clear container of water. If the item sinks, the sink team in each surf team gets to answer the review question. If the item floats, the float team in each surf team gets to answer the review question. Continue dropping items into the water and allowing the kids to answer the review questions. Option 2 - CHOOSE A COLOR Paper in various colors, tape, bucket Prepare Cut a small corner off of each piece of colored paper and place the corners in a bucket. Tape the papers on the wall. Call for a volunteer from each surf team. Ask each volunteer to stand in front of a color of their choice. Pull a small paper from the bucket. The clubber(s) standing in front of the paper in the color you pull gets to answer a review question. After each question, quickly dismiss the volunteers and call for another set of clubbers to come up and choose a color. Continue play until all questions have been answered. REVIEW QUESTIONS 1. Where did Jesus go to pray? (Mountain) 2. Where did the disciples go? (The other side of the lake) 3. How did the disciples get there? (In a boat) 4. What happened while the disciples were in the boat? (The wind beat against the boat) 5. What did Jesus do? (Walked on the water toward the boat) 6.
