The Priority of Family Worship! Deuteronomy 6:1-9! Commander Rick Husband was a United States Air Force Colonel, an astronaut with NASA, and the space shuttle commander of the Columbia and was among the seven astronauts who were killed when the craft disintegrated after reentry into the Earth's atmosphere.! In the book, High Calling, which is the biography of his life written by his wife Evelyn Husband, she said that he wanted to be an astronaut since his fourth birthday. It was the dream of his life, but there was something more important to him. More than anything in the world, Rick Husband was a committed disciple who prized time with his children. His work sometimes took him away for extended periods of time, but he always managed to create ways to bridge the gap created by the time and distance. He was committed to leading his family to worship, so much so that on one momentous trip, which would be his very last, Rick created a videotape with 18 daily devotions on it one for each day he'd be gone.! "I can at least talk to them over the videotape and let them know I'm praying for them," he said. There was nothing he could think of that was better than telling them about Christ.! His devotional from February 1, 2003, included the following words to his daughter, Laura.! It's Landing Day and hopefully, if the weather's good, I'll be landing today in Florida. I'm certainly looking forward to seeing you, Matthew, and Mama. Rick read from Laura's devotional book and when he finished, he prayed for her. Okay, Laura, it won't be long before I see you! I love you very, very much I'll see you in just a little while! I love you. Bye, Bye!! Rick wanted both of his children, Laura and Matthew, to have a daily relationship with God. It's what had changed Rick's life, and he knew it would sustain Laura and Matthew

for the rest of their lives. Leading his family to worship and follow Christ was Rick's highest calling.! That day, February 1, 2003, Captain Rick Husband and the crew of the Space Shuttle Columbia died when the shuttle broke apart over north Texas during re-entry. His life was tragically lost, but the legacy he left behind for his children still lives on.! Before worship will ever become powerful and life-changing in the church, it must first be prioritized in our individual lives and in our homes. There is nothing more important that we can do as families than to worship together and teach our children to follow Jesus Christ. As goes the home, so goes the church.! I read where the Puritans saw family worship so foundational that they would prevent a man from taking communion if he failed to lead his family in worship. Family worship is the foundation of Christian parenting. As family worship goes, so will go the family. The Puritans thought family worship was the whole backbone of society. In a day where society seems to be coming apart at the seams, we need to look deeper than just the surface issues. The real problem can be traced to a breakdown of the home and a failure to lead our families to follow Christ in discipleship.! Perhaps much of this stems from the poor job we have done within the church of coming alongside parents and teaching them how to lead their families to worship God.! Never before has there been such a huge need for a biblical focus on what family worship is and why it is essential.! The Bible has so much to say about the importance of family worship in the home and the responsibility that parents have to instruct their children in the truth. One of the most foundational passages where this is emphasized is here in Deuteronomy 6.! The word Deuteronomy literally means second law or repetition of the law. Here in this fifth book of the Old Testament, Moses reviews the law originally given at Sinai and applies it to Israel s life in the Promised Land which they were about to enter. The book of Deuteronomy records a series of addresses that Moses gave to the second

generation of Israelites as he sought to equip their generation for their new life in the Promised Land. The older generation is to teach the younger generation principles for godly living.! The best place where this occurs is in the context of the home.! In these verses, the Bible shows us that family worship is a priority in the believer s home. There are four principles of family worship that I want to draw from this text.! 1. Parents must TEACH their children to worship God! Now this is the commandment the statutes and the rules that the Lord your God commanded me to teach you, that you may do them in the land to which you are going over, to possess it, that you may fear the Lord your God, you and your son and your son s son, by keeping all His statutes and commandments, which I command you! Moses was very clear in teaching the importance of worship to this second generation of Israelites. They needed to know all that God had done on their behalf so that they could teach their children. In the first four chapters of Deuteronomy, Moses basically summarized all that the Lord had done for His people:! In chapter 1, he reminded them of how God had given them victory over the Moabites and of the former generation s refusal to trust God and enter the land! In chapter 2, he reminded them of how God sustained them during forty long years in the wilderness and how they had lacked nothing! In chapter 3, he reminded them of the victory that God had given them over Og the king of Bashan and all of his land and territory! In chapter 4, he reminded them of the need for their uncompromising obedience to God, and of how God had revealed Himself to Israel! In chapter 5, he reminds them of the ten commandments, the basic principles of God s law!

Now that the foundation had been laid in their hearts and minds, here in chapter 6 Moses turns his focus to the proper motives for obedience and why the people should honor God s law. If they wanted God s blessing on their lives once they entered the Promised Land, they needed to know that it would be based upon their love and obedience to God and whether or not they were leading their families to worship God faithfully.! Moses begins chapter 6 by calling on the Israel to teach their children to worship God.! Tedd Tripp - One of the most important callings God has given parents is to display the greatness, goodness, and glory of the God for whom they are made. Parents have the opportunity, through word and deed, to show children the one true object of worship the God of the Bible.! Worship must first be taught at home.! Before you say amen to what I just said, stop and think about how hard this is in our current generation. One of the greatest challenges a committed disciple of Jesus will face in our day is raising sons and daughters who worship God while surrounded by a cultural climate that is godless and increasingly pervasive.! Many Christian parents in the church today have allowed their home life to be determined by more of a cultural worldview than a biblical one.! Worship is just one more area of an already compartmentalized life rather than being central to the family itself. The end result is a home life that looks no different from the average home in today s society, with the exception of church on Sunday.! If you don t believe that today s average Christian family has bought into cultural norms, just consider at least three things that are often deemed more important for our children than their own personal relationship with Christ.! Making the grade! Making the team!

Making the date! All of these are fine and dandy in their own proper place, but far too many Christian parents end up put their child s relationship with Jesus Christ on the back burner while pursuing lesser things. This must be addressed in the church today, and the only way we can see positive change is by being intentional worshipers who teach our children.! Charles Spurgeon - To neglect the instruction of our offspring is worse than brutish. Family religion is necessary for the nation, for the family itself, and for the church of God Would that parents would awaken to a sense of the importance of this matter. It is a pleasant duty to talk of Jesus to our sons and daughters, and the more so because it has often proved to be an accepted work, for God has saved the children through the parents prayers and admonitions.! This is far cry from where we are today in our generation where the spiritual upbringing of children is neglected or outsourced.! Robert Dabney - The education of children for God is the most important business done on earth. It is the one business for which the earth exists. To it all politics, all war, all literature, all money making ought to be subordinated; and every parent especially ought to feel, every hour of the day, that next to making his own calling and election sure, this is the end for which he is kept alive by God this is his task on earth.! Parenting not politics, not the classroom, not the science lab, not even the pulpit is the place of greatest influence. Perhaps you've heard it said, The hand that rocks the cradle rocks the world.! We must intentionally teach our children to be worshipers of God. Never take for granted the influence that you have in their lives. Men, what our sons and daughters come to learn about God, they largely see it modeled in the example that we put before their eyes.! Joshua would echo this same sentiment:!

Joshua 24:15 - Choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.! Notice in these first three verses how Moses tells the people of Israel to be intentional in their worship and how they were to show multigenerational faithfulness to God. The commandment was for them, their children, and their children s children.! Parents who teach their children to worship God understand the importance of three things in their home the Word of God, the fear of God, and the blessing of God.! The WORD of God! Now this is the commandment, the statutes and the rules, that the Lord your God commanded me to teach you, that you may do them in the land to which you are going over, to possess it.! Moses saw the home as the principal delivery system for the transmittal of God s truth from generation to generation. There is no mention here of Moses encouraging the people to rely on the professionals to teach the Word of God to their children.! The responsibility rests squarely on mom and dad s shoulders. God intends for our homes to be saturated with the truth of His Word. Just consider what said just a few verses later:! 6:7-9 - You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.! The Word of God is to occupy a prominent place in our homes. The primary place where God s Word is to taught and practiced is in the home.! Voddie Baucham - Just a few generations ago a man was considered spiritually responsible if he led his family before the throne of God in prayer, read and taught the

Scriptures at home, and led family devotions (among other things). Today parents are considered responsible if they find the church with the best-staffed nursery and the most up-to-date youth ministry.! But unfortunately the biblical responsibility of parents to teach the Word of God to their children has been left behind. The average family spends more time with the remote control in their hand than they do gathered around the Word of God for family worship and instruction.! Our minds are to be informed by God s truth, our decisions must be filtered in light of God s truth, and our hearts must be passionate about God s truth.! Psalm 119:9 - How can a young man keep his way pure? By guarding it according to Your word.! Dad, do your children see you reading your Bible? Do you read the Bible to them? Every Christian home needs to practice at least three disciplines:! Daily instruction in the Word of God! Daily prayer before the throne of God! Daily singing of the praises of God! The FEAR of God! that you may fear the Lord your God, you and your son and your son s son, by keeping all His statutes and His commandments, which I command you, all the days of your life, and that your days may be long.! The intention behind the law was fear and reverence for God. The word fear used in this sense is not the fear that we are most familiar with, as in the fear of something that will harm. Rather, it is the fear that is associated with a a healthy and reverential respect for something. This type of fear is the opposite of a nonchalant and disrespectful attitude.!

Fearing God means having such a reverence for Him that it has a great impact on the way we live our lives. The fear of God is respecting Him, obeying Him, submitting our lives to His Word, and worshipping Him in awe.! Proverbs 1:7 - The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge.! Proverbs 9:10 - The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight.! Ecclesiastes 12:1, 13 - Remember also your Creator in the days of your youth, before the evil days come Fear God and keep His commandments, for this is the whole duty of man.! Notice that the text says, That you may fear the Lord by keeping all His statutes. Obedience is to flow out of and lead to fear of the Lord, that is, a true recognition of all that he is and an attitude of deep reverence and respect.! God desires multi-generational faithfulness.! When one generation fails to teach another the fear of God, the next generation will forget God altogether.! The BLESSING of God! Hear therefore, O Israel, and be careful to do them, that it may go well with you, and that you may multiply greatly, as the Lord, the God of your fathers, has promised you, in a land flowing with milk and honey.! If Israel obeyed the commands of God and taught their children to do so as well, it would go well for them in the land that they were about to enter.! No less than six times in the book of Deuteronomy does Moses refer to the Promised Land as a land flowing with milk and honey. This was an expression that described the richness and fruitfulness of the land.!

Milk was a staple food and honey was a sweet luxury, so a land that literally flowed with milk and honey would provide all that the people needed. It was an expression that spoke of God s blessing in the lives of His people.! Multi-generational faithfulness leads to multiplying impact.! You perhaps have never heard of Susanna Wesley. She was the mother of 19 children, 9 of which died before she did. Her husband Samuel was a clergymen in the church of England, and due to some bad financial decisions, was always in debt and even spent time in a debtor s prison. Through much adversity, Susanna dedicated her life to instilling a sense of worship and godly fear into each of her children. She developed several household rules that she held her children to, known as Susanna Wesley s Sixteen House Rules:! 1. Eating between meals not allowed.! 2. As children they are to be in bed by 8 p.m.! 3. They are required to take medicine without complaining.! 4. Subdue self- will in a child, and those working together with God to save the child's soul.! 5. To teach a child to pray as soon as he can speak.! 6. Require all to be still during Family Worship.! 7. Give them nothing that they cry for, and only that when asked for politely.! 8. To prevent lying, punish no fault which is first confessed and repented of.! 9. Never allow a sinful act to go unpunished.! 10. Never punish a child twice for a single offense.! 11. Comment and reward good behavior.! 12. Any attempt to please, even if poorly performed, should be commended.!

13. Preserve property rights, even in smallest matters.! 14. Strictly observe all promises.! 15. Require no daughter to work before she can read well.! 16. Teach children to fear the rod.! Two of Susanna Wesley s children, named John and Charles, you are probably quite familiar with, for both are the founders of the modern Methodist movement. Charles Wesley wrote more than 6,000 hymns. John Wesley was a fiery preacher who led hundred of thousands to faith in Jesus Christ. Largely because of her investment, Susanna Wesley s children went on to change the world.! 2. Parents must TELL their children who God is! Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children! This passage of Scripture was among the most important passages in Jewish life. Their confession of faith was called the Shema which means to hear and was taken from this very text. The Shema is still recited twice a day by orthodox Jews all around the world. So important was the Shema that Jewish boys were required to memorize it as soon as they were able to speak.! Israel was surrounded by nations that worshiped all sorts of gods, but God s people affirmed to them all that there was only one true and living God.! 3. Parents must TAKE their children to the cross! When your son asks you in time to come, What is the meaning of the testimonies and the statutes and the rules that the Lord our God has commanded you? then you shall say to your son, We were Pharaoh s slaves in Egypt. And the Lord brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand. And the Lord showed signs and wonders, great and

grievous, against Egypt and against Pharaoh and all his household, before our eyes. And He brought us out from there, that He might bring us in and give us the land that He swore to give to our fathers.! 4. Parents must TRAIN their children to be disciples! And the Lord commanded us to do all these statutes, to fear the Lord our God, for our good always, that He might preserve us alive, as we are this day. And it will be righteousness for us, if we are careful to do all this commandment before the Lord our God, as He has commanded us.!
