Services and Notices Sunday 5 th July 2015 Fifth Sunday after Trinity A very warm welcome to all our visitors today. Please feel free to introduce yourself to one of the clergy after the service. Please let us know if you are new and would like to join our regular congregations or would like to know more about how we can support you in your faith. Please, take this Pew Slip away with you so that you can refer to the notices contained in it. Please, also use it to prompt prayers for this Cathedral and all that we seek to do in God s service. Large print versions of the Order of Service and this notice sheet are available. Please ask a member of Select Vestry or a Verger if you would like one. An induction loop system is also in operation for hearing aid users. A Note from the Dean Welcome to the Cathedral. A special welcome if you are joining us for the first time. Please, complete a Welcome Card if you would like to give us your contact details. Our new Canon Evangelist It is very good to have the reside tiary c ergy tea back up t fu u bers, f wi g Ca Ruth Hi d s i sta ati ast Su day. P ease, d ake every eff rt t make yourself known to Ruth and help to make her feel at home. I would like to thank those people who helped to provide and serve the refreshments following the service of collation and installation; we are enjoying a very busy time at the moment and your support is very much appreciated. School Leavers and Church Schools On Wednesday we filled the Cathedral twice (one service in the morning, a second in the afternoon) with Year 6 School children who are about to leave Church of England Primary Schools across the region. They came to thank God for their time at their existi g sch s a d t pray f r G d s c tinued guidance as they look forward to the future. There really were wonderful services that they will remember for their rest of their lives. The afternoon service ended in a dramatic way as the thunder and lightning accompanied the final prayers and blessing. Please, do pray for these children and for the pupils and staff of our diocesan schools; along with Richard Noake, the Diocesan Director of Education, and his staff. Choristers Leaving and the Installation of Canon Wendy Wilby as Honorary Minor Canon I am delighted that during the 3.30pm Choral Evensong today we will be doing two very important things. The first is to thank the Cathedral Choir for its contribution to the life of this community and its worship, and to say farewell to those choristers who are leaving the choir at the end of the academic year. The second delight is to install Canon Wendy Wilby as an Honorary Minor Canon. This is partly in recognition of the wonderful support that she has given us over the past 9 months and also to mark her ongoing involvement with ministry here at the Cathedral. Everyone is very welcome to join us for this service; after which there will be a reception with wine and canapés.
Ordinations of Deacons and Priests Please pray for those who were made deacon here yesterday by Bishop Nick. Andrew Howorth Sue Jennings Tracey Raistrick Nick Lattimer Olasupo Ogunyinka Caroline Harrison Phil Maries Craig Tomlinson Evelyne Barrow Marcus Bull John Dracup Linda Maslen Jack Parkes Jonathan Cain Nick Morgan Claire Renshaw Alison Stewart-Smith Archdeacon to become Bishop in Ripon Cathedral It was announced by 10 Downing Street recently that the Ven Paul Slater, Archdeacon of Richmond and Craven, is to become the first Bishop of Richmond in almost a hundred years (the See of Richmond has been dormant since 1921). The role of the Bishop of Richmond will be to support Bishop Nick, taking a special interest in the Leeds Episcopal Area. Just before the announcement, Archbishop Sentamu offered Ripon Cathedral the privilege of hosting this significant event. We accepted with enthusiasm, knowing that this is an important development for the life of the whole diocese, and wishing to support the Archbishop, Bishop Nick and Archdeacon Paul. Archdeac Pau s c secration will take place here in the Cathedral on Sunday 19 th July at 4pm. Interestingly, this will be the first consecration in this cathedral since 1293. In his The Story of Ripon Minster Lucius Smith wrote, I the year 1293 we have the instance of Ripon Minster being used as one of the cathedral churches of the diocese of York. On August 15 th Archbishop Romanus of York consecrated Thomas of Da t at Rip t be Bish p f Ga way. Please, do pray for Paul as he prepares for his consecration and for Archbishop Se ta u wh wi preside; a s f r Pau s wife Bever ey a d their fa i y, a d f r Bish p Nick and the diocese. Time Capsule The Chapter has agreed to incorporate a time capsule in the stonework repairs on the north east corner of the Cathedral; there is a convenient space that will be walled up. We will include a letter to the future from me, information about the stonework project along with a letter from the Chancellor of the Exchequer (if he agrees) since he provided the 20million for the World War I Centenary Cathedrals Repair Fund; and objects reflecting the life of the Cathedral community, the City of Ripon, the diocese and the nation. We will involve children from local schools and the Cathedral; and will include something that celebrates the Quee s g reig. With my very best wishes Dean John
