OfferingTALK#4 TITLE: Financial Security Scripture Passage: Proverbs 19:17, NRSV We will worship God with our giving in just a few minutes. If you have not prepared your gift, feel free to do so now. If you have already given online, thank you for your generosity. We hear a lot about security these days: national security, Social Security and, especially, financial security. What if our thinking about security and money is upside down? We tend to think that the more money we save, the more secure our future will be. The heftier our financial portfolio, the better we can ride out stock market storms. That is not how God sees it. Sure, Scripture praises wise planning as a way to prepare for the future. So is something else generous giving. Solomon put it this way: Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the Lord, and will be repaid in full. (Proverbs 19:17) When we give generously to help those in need, we lend our money to God to use as God sees fit. It is as if we are investing with the Maker of all things. Imagine having God committed to repaying you for your generosity. You need no Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. for your investment with God. You need not wonder if God s promises will fail in a bank crisis. You can give generously and confidently to empower those in need because you know the God who owns it all will repay you guaranteed. Now that is what I call true security. If we would invest generously together as God would have us do, how much more could God accomplish through us? As Scripture (Ephesians 3:20) tells us, God is able to accomplish abundantly far more than all we can ask or imagine. Today, let us invest in God s work with true security, knowing that, together, we can do more.

Abbreviated VERSION TITLE: Financial Security Scripture Passage: Proverbs 19:17, NRSV We will worship God with our giving in just a few minutes, but first, let us think for a moment about security. We tend to think a lot about financial security, assuming that the more money we save, the more secure our future will be. What if God sees security differently? Solomon tells us, Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the Lord, and will be repaid in full. (Proverbs 19:17) When we give generously to help those in need, we lend our money to God to use as God sees fit. You can give generously and confidently to empower those in need because you know the God who owns it all will repay you guaranteed. Today, let us invest in God s work with true security, knowing that together we can do more.

Bullet Points VERSION TITLE: Financial Security Scripture Passage: Proverbs 19:17, NRSV Prepare to worship God with our giving. We think a lot about security: national security, Social Security, financial security. We believe that the more we save, the more secure our future will be. God sees it differently. Scripture praises wise planning, but also generous giving. Solomon tells us, Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the Lord, and will be repaid in full. (Proverbs 19:17) Giving generously to those in need is lending money to God to use as God sees fit. We can give confidently because God repays our generosity guaranteed. That is true security. Invest generously today in God s work, so that, together, we can do more.

GIVING SPOTLIGHT: Choose a way your local church is investing in God s work and highlight it. Remind your congregation of God s promise to repay them with blessings far greater than any earthly treasure. Connect this illustration with God s global interests by sharing how your church s local giving multiplies through connectional giving with The United Methodist Church.
