GREAT EVENTS OF THE BIBLE -- THE CALL OF MOSES. Introduction: A. In Our Last Two Lessons We Saw The Birth Of Moses, The Courage Of His Parents To Save His Life From Pharaoh s Evil Decree, And God Preparing Him To Lead Israel Out Of Egyptian Bondage. B. Tonight -- God Calls Moses To Be The Leader Of Israel. C. The Text: Ex. 3:1-10 D. Song: We Are Standing On Holy Ground! I. (Slide #2) The Call Of Moses. Ex. 3:1-10 A. Text: Now Moses was tending the flock of Jethro his father-in-law, the priest of Midian. And he led the flock to the back of the desert, and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. 2 And the Angel of the LORD appeared to him in a flame of fire from the midst of a bush. So he looked, and behold, the bush was burning with fire, but the bush was not consumed. 3 Then Moses said, I will now turn aside and see this great sight, why the bush does not burn. 4 So when the LORD saw that he turned aside to look, God called to him from the midst of the bush and said, Moses, Moses! And he said, Here I am. 5 Then He said, Do not draw near this place. Take your sandals off your feet, for the place where you stand is holy ground. 6 Moreover He said, I am the God of your father--the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. And Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look upon God. 7 And the LORD said: I have surely seen the oppression of My people who are in Egypt, and have heard their cry because of their taskmasters, for I know their sorrows. 8 So I have come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians, and to bring them up from that land to a good and large land, to a land flowing with milk and honey, to the place of the Canaanites and the Hittites and the Amorites and the Perizzites and the Hivites and the Jebusites. 9 Now therefore, behold, the cry of the children of Israel has come to Me, and I have also seen the oppression with which the Egyptians 1

oppress them. 10 Come now, therefore, and I will send you to Pharaoh that you may bring My people, the children of Israel, out of Egypt. B. ( ) The Reason For The Call -- God Needs A Leader To Motivate And To Guide Israel To Exit Egypt And To Trek To The Promised Land That He Had Promised To Abraham And To His Descendants! C. The Call: 1. (Slide #3) The Circumstances when Moses was called: a. Moses was tending Jethro s sheep. 1. Jethro was his father-in-law. 2. Jethro was the priest of Midian. b. ( ) Moses had led the sheep to the back of the desert, near mount Horeb. 1. Back of the desert -- this was the west side of the desert. 2. Horeb -- this is either Mt. Sinai in particular or the mountain ranges around Mt. Sinai. 2. (Slide #4) The supernatural nature of the call: a. The Angel of the LORD appeared to Moses in a flame of fire of a bush that appeared to be on fire but was not consumed! 2,3 b. Moses was intrigued to see a bush that appeared to be on fire but was not being consumed. 3. (Slide #5) God s Message in the call: a. God s Message: I have seen the oppression of My people in Egypt; I have heard their cry; I have chosen YOU to go to Pharaoh and to lead My people out of bondage! b. I have surely seen the oppression of My people who are in Egypt, and have heard their cry because of their taskmasters, for I know their sorrows. 8 So I have come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians, and to bring them up from that land to a good and large land, to a land flowing with milk and honey, to the place of the Canaanites and the Hittites and the Amorites and the Perizzites and the Hivites and the Jebusites. 9 Now therefore, behold, the cry of the children of Israel has come to Me, and I have also seen the oppression with which the Egyptians oppress them. 10 Come now, therefore, and I will send you to Pharaoh that you may bring My people, the children of Israel, out of Egypt. 7-10 4. ( ) Moses reactions to the call: a. ( ) At first, he responded Here am I. 4 b. ( ) Then awe: 1. Moses is warned not to approach: Do not draw near this place. Take your sandals off your feet, for the place where you stand is holy ground. 5 2. Imagine his reaction. 2

c. ( ) Then terror! 1. God informs Moses who He is! I am the God of your father--the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. 6 2. Moses reaction -- He was terrified! And Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look upon God. 7 II. (Slide #6) Moses Response To God s Call. Ex. 3:11-21 A. Text: But Moses said to God, Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh, and that I should bring the children of Israel out of Egypt? 12 So He said, I will certainly be with you. And this shall be a sign to you that I have sent you: When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you shall serve God on this mountain. 13 Then Moses said to God, Indeed, when I come to the children of Israel and say to them, The God of your fathers has sent me to you, and they say to me, What is His name? what shall I say to them? 14 And God said to Moses, I AM WHO I AM. And He said, Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, I AM has sent me to you. 15 Moreover God said to Moses, Thus you shall say to the children of Israel: The LORD God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you. This is My name forever, and this is My memorial to all generations. 16 Go and gather the elders of Israel together, and say to them, The LORD God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Jacob, appeared to me, saying, I have surely visited you and seen what is done to you in Egypt; 17 and I have said I will bring you up out of the affliction of Egypt to the land of the Canaanites and the Hittites and the Amorites and the Perizzites and the Hivites and the Jebusites, to a land flowing with milk and honey. 18 Then they will heed your voice; and you shall come, you and the elders of Israel, to the king of Egypt; and you shall say to him, The LORD God of the Hebrews has met with us; and now, please, let us go three days' journey into the wilderness, that we may sacrifice to the LORD our God. 19 But I am sure that the king of Egypt will not let you go, no, not even by a mighty hand. 20 So I will stretch out My hand and strike Egypt with all My wonders which I will do in its midst; and after that he will let you go. 21 And I will give this people favor in the sight of the Egyptians; and it shall be, when you go, that you shall not go empty-handed. 22 But every woman shall ask of her neighbor, namely, of her who dwells near her house, articles of silver, articles of gold, and clothing; and you shall put them on your sons and on your daughters. So you shall plunder the Egyptians. B. ( ) Moses Responses/Reactions To God s Call: 1. ( ) I am a NOBODY! 11 a. Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh, and that I should bring the children of Israel out of Egypt? 11 b. Moses immediately goes into self-deprecating mode; he feels unable for such a mighty task and for the accompanying responsibility! c. God s response: 3

1. I will certainly be with you. And this shall be a sign to you that I have sent you: When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you shall serve God on this mountain. 12 2. God s message: Trust Me! I will be with you! 2. ( ) How will I convince the Israelites to follow me? How will I convince them that I have leadership authority? 13 a. Indeed, when I come to the children of Israel and say to them, The God of your fathers has sent me to you, and they say to me, What is His name? what shall I say to them? 13 b. God s response: 14-21 1. Tell them I AM WHO I AM has sent me! 14 a. God is affirming His everlasting nature and authority! b. The ETERNAL GOD is going to deliver you! c. I will be known to you by this name forever! 1. This is My name forever, and this is My memorial to all generations. 15 2. I am the ETERNAL God! 2. Tell them The LORD God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you. 15 3. Give a message to the elders of the people: a. Tell them about My appearance to you. 16 1. The LORD God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Jacob, appeared to me 2. Moses is to tell them about the unconsumed burning bush. b. Inform them that I have seen their affliction in Egypt! 16 1. I have surely visited you and seen what is done to you in Egypt. 2. God KNEW about their oppression -- Pharaoh s demand to kill the babies, their enslavement, and their oppression. c. I am going to deliver them out of bondage and take them to the Promised Land! 17 1. As I have promised, I will bring you up out of the affliction of Egypt to the land of the Canaanites and the Hittites and the Amorites and the Perizzites and the Hivites and the Jebusites, to a land flowing with milk and honey. 2. The time has come for Israel to go to the land promised to them for since the days of Abraham! a. Abraham: Gen. 12:1; 13:12,15,16; 15:13,18; 24:7 b. Isaac: Gen. 26:2,3 c. Jacob: Gen. 28:4,13,15; 35:12; 48:4,21 d. Joseph to Israel: Gen. 50:24 4. After you inform the people and the elders of my message, you and the elders of Israel are to go and speak to Pharaoh. 18 4

a. Tell him, The LORD God of the Hebrews has met with us; and now, please, let us go three days journey into the wilderness, that we may sacrifice to the LORD our God. b. Moses and Aaron would be God s messengers to give His Message to Pharaoh. 5. God told Moses about subsequent events -- Pharaoh s reactions, God s response, God s command to the Israelites. 19-22 a. Pharaoh will not let Israel leave! (Not even by a mighty hand) 19 b. I will perform amazing miracles; then he will let you go! 1. So I will stretch out My hand and strike Egypt with all My wonders which I will do in its midst; and after that he will let you go. 20 2. When God working miraculously in Egypt, Pharaoh would be humbled and would allow Israel to leave. c. The people will curry favor with the Egyptians; you ask for assistance; they will give it to you! 21,22 1. And I will give this people favor in the sight of the Egyptians; and it shall be, when you go, that you shall not go empty-handed. 22 But every woman shall ask of her neighbor, namely, of her who dwells near her house, articles of silver, articles of gold, and clothing; and you shall put them on your sons and on your daughters. So you shall plunder the Egyptians. 2. God would providentially help the Israelites to get the favor of the Egyptians in order to gain wealth and clothing. By doing this, they would plunder the Egyptians. 3. ( ) What if Israel doesn t believe that you have called me? 4:1 a. Then Moses answered and said, But suppose they will not believe me or listen to my voice; suppose they say, The LORD has not appeared to you. 2 So the LORD said to him, What is that in your hand? He said, A rod. 3 And He said, Cast it on the ground. So he cast it on the ground, and it became a serpent; and Moses fled from it. 4 Then the LORD said to Moses, Reach out your hand and take it by the tail (and he reached out his hand and caught it, and it became a rod in his hand), 5 that they may believe that the LORD God of their fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has appeared to you. 6 Furthermore the LORD said to him, Now put your hand in your bosom. And he put his hand in his bosom, and when he took it out, behold, his hand was leprous, like snow. 7 And He said, Put your hand in your bosom again. So he put his hand in his bosom again, and drew it out of his bosom, and behold, it was restored like his other flesh. 8 Then it will be, if they do not believe you, nor heed the message of the first sign, that they may believe the message of the latter sign. 9 And it shall be, if they do not believe even these two signs, or listen to your voice, that you shall take water from the river and pour it on the dry 5

land. And the water which you take from the river will become blood on the dry land. Ex. 4:2-9 b. God gave Moses three miraculous signs to convince Israel that he was indeed God s chosen leader to lead them out of bondage. 1. His rod would become a serpent when he threw it on the ground; when he picked it up by the tail, it would again become a rod. 2-4 2. When he put his hand in his bosom and pulled it out, it was leprous! When he put it in his bosom again and pulled it out, it was restored to whole flesh! 5-8 3. He could also take water from the Nile, pour it on the land, and it would instantly become blood! 9 4. ( ) I am not a speaker! a. Then Moses said to the LORD, O my Lord, I am not eloquent, neither before nor since You have spoken to Your servant; but I am slow of speech and slow of tongue. 4:10 b. God s answer: So the LORD said to him, Who has made man s mouth? Or who makes the mute, the deaf, the seeing, or the blind? Have not I, the LORD? 12 Now therefore, go, and I will be with your mouth and teach you what you shall say. 13 But he said, O my Lord, please send by the hand of whomever else You may send. 14 So the anger of the LORD was kindled against Moses, and He said: Is not Aaron the Levite your brother? I know that he can speak well. And look, he is also coming out to meet you. When he sees you, he will be glad in his heart. 15 Now you shall speak to him and put the words in his mouth. And I will be with your mouth and with his mouth, and I will teach you what you shall do. 16 So he shall be your spokesman to the people. And he himself shall be as a mouth for you, and you shall be to him as God. 17 And you shall take this rod in your hand, with which you shall do the signs. 4:11-17 c. God was put out with Moses and his excuses! d. His provocative question: WHO MADE MAN S MOUTH? 11-12 e. The point, If I made your mouth, I can assist you to speak the right words! f. Moses begged God to send another spokesman. 13 g. God s reply: There is Aaron your brother; he will be your spokesman. You will give him My Message. 14-17 III. (Slide #7) Lessons: A. ( ) God s People Often Do Not See Themselves As God Sees Them! 1. It can hinder us mightily! 2. It can keep us from doing all we can for the Lord! 3. Commend so many men who have stepped forward in the elder/deacon nomination process. 6

4. Some of you need maturity; some of you have schedules that will not allow you to take on more responsibility now; some of you may not see what God can do with you! B. ( ) When You Approach God, Approach As If You Are Standing On Holy Ground Before Holy God! 1. Our culture has lost a sense of AWE and RESPECT for God. 2. It was an awe-inspiring event when Moses stood on Holy Ground; he went from awe to terror. 3. Sadly, many view approaching God today as common-place or just a casual event! 4. This has been trending for decades! a. Some approach God in prayer as Dear daddy. b. Casualness has been brought into the worship to the point that for some it seems like it is like going to a picnic. c. Worship is simply NOT a place to look like we are going on a hike or a picnic. d. I am not telling you WHAT to wear; I am not telling you to wear a suit or a formal dress; however, Christians wearing shorts, or even wearing immodest attire is out of place as we approach Holy God! C. (Slide #8) When You Give Excuses, Ask, How Would God Respond To My Excuses? 1. Would He say, You are right; I understand.? 2. Would He say: a. Trust Me; I will be with you! Don t you realize that I have always been with you, that I am with you now, and that I will be with you in the future? Ex. 3:12 b. Tell people about Me! Tell them that I, the GREAT I AM speaks to them! Ex. 3:14-22 c. Tell them who I am! Tell them of My mighty supernatural acts of the past that are recorded in Scripture; tell them they will see My power on the Last Day and they will TREMBLE! Ex. 4:2-9 d. Who made your mouth? Don t you realize I can use you in my cause? And if you get brain-freeze and can t talk, take someone with you! Don t use your nerves as an excuse! Ex. 4:11-17 D. ( ) It Is VITAL To Respond To God s Calls; None Are More Vital Than His Call For Us To Leave Sin And Come To Him For Salvation! Mk. 16:15,16; Mt. 28:19,20 7
