We are responsible for how we live our lives, and practice our faith. Teachers, parents, mentors and elders encourage us, challenge us, and sometimes plead with us to work up to our potential. Use it or lose it as the saying goes. Potential can t be measured until it s tested. Great writers have to write, great artists have to paint, great athletes have to practice, and great Christians have to practice their faith. A secret genius may be sitting next to us, but we d never know it, or benefit from it, unless it is shared. Todays gospel parable is about potential that unfolds and multiplies when it is invested. A charism, gift, or talent given to an individual will find its fulfillment in the community. Someone with less talent but who is willing to risk, what she or he has and work with others, comes out ahead of someone with greater talent who keeps it hidden. Why hold back? It is the fear of competition or the possibility of failure? Excuses, excuses, Jesus would say. Even small potential can have large results when it s shared generously. Today we have one of Jesus best-known parables and the most misunderstood. It s not about money or investing but it s about untapped potential. That s what the third servant suffered from. He was timid, didn t want to take a chance, and was more afraid of failing than he was excited about succeeding. Afraid of what? The Masters character, personality, or temper? Must be, because he replies: you are a demanding man. If this Master were God do we regard Him in the same way? Demanding, tough, judgmental, merciless? Well haven t you heard the Good News? God loves you and all He desires is for your best all of the time and not just when things are going your way. God made an investment in you that s the meaning of this parable. It s not just Jesus saying that God has given each of us particular talents to use for His glory. This is true but it s more than that. Everything that we are, and have, is a gift from God and it s to be enjoyed and shared. Life and our faith are not to be squandered nor hidden. We are to live our faith boldly and creatively. At our recent Ministry Weekend over 120 of you decided to live this parable and offer your talents to our community. How that develops all depends upon you and God what a team! Serving with you and the Lord, 3

ORIGINAL ORDER OF THE SACRAMENTS OF INITIATION Questions and Answers 2. Are children ready to be confirmed in Grade 2? The Church believes they are just as ready to receive Confirmation as they are to receive First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion in Grade 2. What are some things the child has begun to understand about Holy Communion? (Examples : the priest asks the Holy Spirit to change the bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Jesus; I am receiving Jesus, not ordinary food; receiving Jesus helps me to be like him and to be one with him and his Body in his mission.) If your child is ready to be nourished by the Precious Body and Blood of Christ, your child is ready to be confirmed. Confirmation is not a rite of passage to adulthood or about confirming of faith in God. It is about God confirming his love for us as he does in Baptism. As a sacrament of initiation, Confirmation, received in its proper theological order ( Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist) opens the door to receive Holy Communion. These donations will be shared with a local food bank. So please be charitable and bring such items as can goods, rice, cereal or our always favorite Spam. Remember we can t outdo God s generosity but let s try. Stewardship Corner Stewardship at Holy Trinity Catholic Church Lesson 73 Unanswered Prayers Has God rejected His people? (Romans 11:1-2) This rhetorical question posed by St. Paul, in our current vernacular, might be phrased Why have You not answered my prayers, O, Lord? We can t see the future, nor can we know how God is working in our lives, but His work continues; we need to trust in Him. Praying is an act of Stewardship, and when we pray, we pray for others and for ourselves and this will bring us closer to God. We can rest assured that God delights in allowing us to be part of His grand plan.
