Philip Payne February 3rd TRUE PROPHETS In Deuteronomy today we hear that God s very words will fill the mouth of a true prophet, but a false prophet will, in a manner of speaking, put mere mortal words into God s mouth. In Mark s Gospel, we see Jesus teaching and healing as a true prophet, one filled with the authority of God s own voice. The whole history of our church is filled with both true and false prophets. Some false prophets were extremely popular and quite well-versed in scripture, and even held positions of authority. But in today s Gospel we learn that Jesus fame spread because he taught with authority; he wasn t an authority because he was popular or famous. Elsewhere, we also learn from him, in his desert temptation confrontations with Satan, that anyone can quote scripture, even against God s purposes. Today we hear that his authority was not like that of the scribes, who held the official positions of religious authority in his day. Our work is to do our best to discern the true prophets in our midst, and to be true prophets as well. The psalmist tells us how to do this: by not hardening our hearts when God speaks. UNITED IN FAITH What is this? A new teaching with authority. Last week, Jesus told the people about his kingdom and conditions to be a member of his kingdom:" The Kingdom of God is at hand, repent and believe in the Gospel." So, who is Jesus? Who is he whom we have to believe in? Who is he whose word we have to believe? That Jesus is a man with authority. People looked at him and his works and said: He taught as one who has authority. He taught differently from the Scribes and the Pharisees. He commands and the demons must obey him. He is the one whom the demon said: We know who you are, you are the holy one of God and other time: You are the Son of God. In the Gospel today, the demon said: What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth. When Jesus healed the possessed man, the demons told him: We know who you are, why do you come to destroy us. As we all know Jesus made the miracles to prove who he is and to prove his mission that he is the one the Father sent to the world. He is the one, whom everybody has to believe: "No one can come to the Father, except through me." He is the Son of God and he, however, is equal to his Father. "My Father and I are one" or " My Father works and I also work". He is the Lamb of God as St. John the Baptist introduced him: Behold the Lamb of God, behold him who takes away the sins of the world... Blessed are those who come to the supper of the Lamb. He is the savior of the world: In order to finish his mission on earth, he accepted suffering and a terrible death on the Cross. He gave his life as ransom for many. Do we believe in the Lord Jesus and join with his kingdom? Let us repent and believe in Jesus, our savior. Fr. Quinn DIVINE MERCYCHAPLET Starting the first Sunday of January, 2018, and every first Sunday, thereafter, the Divine Mercy Chaplet will be recited right after Mass. Please join us! DECISION FOR EACH WEEK Each member of the parish prays to the Lord once a day: Jesus, you are my savior and my God. 2018 MASS BOOK Mass Book for 2018 is open.
