TERM 3 Session 8: Labels Names that stick Aims for this session To understand how much our words can hurt. To use God s words for us to remove that hurt. To ask God for words to describe us. TERM 3: Session 8 - Labels Names that stick 1/6

Labels Names that stick God spot Memory verse Fix these words of mine in your hearts and minds. Deuteronomy 18:11a (NIV) Resource: Yellow mat Use your yellow mat. Ask the children what good things God has been doing in their life this week and ask them to come and share on the God spot while everyone else listens. (This is based on teaching from Session 6, Term 1. If you haven t done this session then refer to the teaching notes from that term.) Last week we asked you to take your balls home to remind you to give a word or a picture to someone in your family. What happened when you did that? Catch up (10 mins) Refer to the teaching notes for this term for guidance on how to run this section. Healing (This is based on teaching from Session 9, Term 2 of the curriculum. If you haven t done this session then see the teaching notes from this term.) Is there something you would like healed? Or is there someone you know who is sick? If the answer is, Yes, just put your hand up. Can the people around them please pray. Remember to remind them to: ask, tell it to go, wait, see what God did and pray again. Allow the children time to do this. Then ask what God did. TERM 3: Session 8 - Labels Names that stick Introduction Resource: YouTube clip from Shrek: https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=mzlejzvygye In this clip, Shrek and Donkey called each other names. Did you notice how Shrek describes himself at the end of the clip as a big, stupid, ugly ogre? Game 1 Balloons x10 per team Permanent marker Bin bags x1 per team XL T-shirt x1 per team (See Resources section for full details.) Divide your children into teams and have one volunteer put on the extra-large T-shirt. Place their set of balloons in a bin liner at a distance from the team. Each person in the team runs and gets one balloon from the bin bag and then stuffs it under the T-shirt of the volunteer for their team. The aim is for all 10 balloons to be stuffed into the shirt in 5 minutes. The team to get the most balloons in the T-shirt wins. 2/6

Labels Names that stick Bible story (3-5 mins) Talk (5-7 mins) Our Bible passage today is taken from a letter that James, the brother of Jesus, wrote. James was telling people how they should live their lives if they are choosing to follow Jesus. 5-7yrs Based on James 4:1-11 Do you know where your fights and arguments come from? They come from being selfish and only wanting the things you want. When you don t get them, you are jealous of others so you argue and fight. You don t ask God or, when you do ask, you ask for selfish things so you don t get anything. You want things just to make you happy. You aren t following God when you do this. You re loving stuff instead of God. The Bible says God is in you because He wants you to be His. God is against the proud but kind to those who are kind. So give yourselves to God. Come near to God and He will come near to you. Don t say anything against each other. If you call them names to their face or behind their back, you aren t following God s law. 8-10yrs Read James 4:1-11 in an age-appropriate Bible. 1 Psalm 139:14 ESV I praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are Your works; my soul knows it very well. 2 Jeremiah 1:5 (ESV) Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations. 3 Philippians 4:13 (ESV) I can do all things through Him who strengthens me. 4 2 Corinthians 6:18 And, I will be a Father to you, and you will be My sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty. (NIV) 5 Isaiah 43:4 Because you are precious in my eyes, and honored, and I love you, I give men in return for you, peoples in exchange for your life. (ESV) 6 Romans 9:26 In the very place where it was said to them, You are not my people there they will be called children of the living God. (NIV) All age White sticky labels, some with crosses on and some with ticks. Ask two children to volunteer to help you. (Jack and Jill) Jill has been upset because Jack borrowed her pencil without asking. To get back at Jack, Jill calls him a name. (At this point put a cross sticker onto the front of Jack.) Now Jack wasn t hurt up until now, but that name really hurt him, and some other children laughed when it was said too. That made Jack think they thought it too. (Add another couple of x stickers to Jack.) Jack s angry and hurt so he doesn t think and calls Jill a name too. (Put a x sticker on Jill.) Now Jill is hurt too; it s no longer about the pencil. Jill s hurt so she calls Jack another name. (Add a x sticker to Jack.) Now they are both even more hurt and angry and words start flying back and forth. (Add x stickers to both.) Then a teacher comes and breaks up the fight. The teacher makes them both say sorry to each other; that helps a bit and a couple of the names get forgotten (take a couple of x stickers off both children) and they both sit down calmly. The problem is; names aren t so easy to take off. Can you see some of these names have stayed on Jack and Jill? Those names are still causing hurt. They will remember some of those names and start to think they are part of who they are; that s not a good thing because it pulls them down. Remember the clip from earlier? Shrek had started to use the names people called him to describe himself. It was like him adding the stickers to his heart again and again. Did you know that God knows your name? That He has words that describe you that are a million times better than any name someone can call you? These words make you feel on top of the world, they can help you take off all the other names. God says things like, You are beautiful 1, you are unique 2, you are strong 3, you are my child 4, you are precious 5, you are a prince/princess 6. (As you say these things take off the x labels and put on tick labels.) God can help you take off those x labels so they are forgotten and so they don t hurt you anymore. TERM 3: Session 8 - Labels Names that stick 3/6

Labels Names that stick Talk continued Use a personal example can you think of a name you ve been called in your life that has affected you long after the argument finished? If you are happy to and it is age-appropriate, share this story with the children. Have you overcome it or does it still affect you sometimes? Be honest. The ideal example would include a story of how God removed this label (lie) from your life and what new name (truth) He gave you to replace it. (If a name is still affecting you, have prayer ministry as preparation for this module to deal with it so you can close off the hurt and any after-effects.) Response (10 mins) Blank labels and pens We are going to spend some time thinking about names we ve been called in the past and then we are going to let Jesus come and take off those labels. We are going to ask God to give us some new words to replace those labels: words that describe who we really are to Him. Have the children move into small groups with a leader to discuss what names they have been called in the past and how these names made them feel. After 5 minutes, say to the children that we are all going to pray for each other to ask Jesus to come and take off any of those old labels and for God to give them some new names. Ask everyone to use all of their bodies and minds to see what they can catch from God while they pray. Explain we are going to use a very simple prayer: Jesus, come and take these old names off (insert child s name). Then we are going to wait while Jesus comes and takes these names off. Once we ve waited, we will pray a second prayer; God, give us new words for (child s name). As God gives them words, write them down on labels and stick them on the child you are praying for. TERM 3: Session 8 - Labels Names that stick Reflect and share How did it feel to have the old labels taken off? How will you remind yourself of the new words God has given you? Action Sticky labels and pens Ask the children to write a word like Beautiful, Strong, Special etc. onto a sticky label. Tell them, when they go back into church, God will show them someone to give this label to. Then have them (while supervised) give it to this person. If necessary, arrange with your church leader to return to church 5 minutes early to facilitate doing this. Craft (5-10 mins) Scratch art hearts from http://www.bakerross.co.uk/ scratch-art-heart-magnets-1 Have the children scratch the memory verse around the edge of the heart. (Fix these words of mine in your hearts and minds.) Then have them add the words they received during the prayer time to the middle of the heart. 4/6

Labels Names that stick Game 2 Resource: Print Appendix 1, cut up the labels on page 2 and place them in a bag or box Divide your children into two teams then ask each a question in turn. The child who answers correctly comes and picks a label out of the bag/box. The point for the correct answer gets retained by their team if it says keep it or gets given to the other team if they choose a give it away label. After five minutes the team with the most points wins. God spot: Yellow mat Introduction: Game 1: Resources for this session Clip from Shrek - https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=mzlejzvygye For each team, a set of balloons in a bin liner with one of each of the following words written on the balloons (Fix these words of mine in your hearts and minds) and an extra-large T shirt Bible story: 8-10yrs: Age-appropriate Bible Talk: White sticky labels with crosses and ticks drawn on different labels Response: Blank labels and pens Action: White sticky labels and pens Craft: Scratch art hearts from http://www.bakerross.co.uk/ scratch-art-heart-magnets-1 Game 2: Appendix 1 Bag or box to put the labels in TERM 3: Session 8 - Labels Names that stick 5/6

Labels Names that stick Parental communication Dear Parent/Guardian, This week we thought about labels that others can give us when they call us names, based on James 4:1-11. We learnt that God doesn t want these labels to stick, but that He has words that describe us that we should keep in our hearts instead. In our response time we asked Jesus to come and take off any labels other people have given us that weren t nice. Then we asked God to give us new words to replace them. If you would like to explore this idea with them, we d suggest you play a word game with your child like Pictionary or Scrabble (whatever is appropriate to their age). After you ve played the game and are having a snack, talk about a time when words have hurt you. Ask your child what labels they would like to give you to replace these words (you ll need some sticky labels and pens for this). Write down the words and then let your child stick these on you. Next week we will be thinking about how we are all priceless in God s eyes and what that means for how we treat other people, based on the story of David and Jonathan in 1 Samuel 18:1-4.
