Page 2 Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Pastor s Page MANY THANKS: It s hard to put into words all that I feel about the last wonderful six years here at St. Kilian. Thank you all for your kindness, your commitment and your dedication to the parish. It has been a real privilege and honor to be part of your journey, and in spite of all the hurdles and roadblocks, we managed to complete a major part of the St. Kilian master plan with the construction of the new church. To say that it was a steep learning curve is a vast understatement, as I am living proof of the authenticity of the Peter Principle (we rise to the level of our own incompetence). At times, with all the various and sometimes conflicting constituencies, entities, interests and regulations, it felt a bit like the Mad Hatter s infamous tea party. Or maybe that was just me. In any case, it is impossible to adequately express my gratitude to each individual who contributed to bringing this vision to life. Over the last couple of weeks, people have been thanking me for building such a beautiful house of worship, and while I m not above accepting unearned credit, it truly is the case that this is your vision. When I arrived on the scene, the church designs were already approved the size, the layout, essentially everything. All I can really claim as my own are the decorations the artwork, the statuary, carvings and liturgical appointments. Even these were the creations of others, in consultation with our parishioners and seeking to execute their ideas in stone, wood, metal and glass. This truly is your house of worship. Along the way, through all the revisions, missteps, dead ends and sidebars, I came up with a maxim of my own: Challenge the experts and trust the artists. That s another story for another day. Beyond the construction of the building, there is the matter of building up the faith life of the parish, a task which goes on and on. You have been always been enthusiastic and responsive to the needs of others and to creating a sense of community, and these last few years have seen a real flourishing of ministries and programs, outreach and evangelization. You genuinely desire to be Catholics in the truest sense of the word, as evidenced by care you give catechesis, faith formation and study of Scripture. I say to you now what I said to the Filipino-American community at their latest Fiesta Night The pastoral lesson I learned here was the art of saying Yes. Yes to zeal and faith. Yes to commitment and capability. Yes to all the ways that the faithful can and should contribute to building up the Body of Christ, the Church. Thank you, thank you. Thank you. I may be moving to another assignment, but this will always be my parish. A SINCERE CORRECTION: A while ago, I wrote an essay assailing the unfounded and spurious criticism by fellow Catholics of Pope Francis, and penned an unfortunate line which stated that the Church has REAL enemies and persecutors in the world, like China, North Korea, Egypt and others. Naturally, this was not well received by people of Egyptian descent, and rightly so. The reason I included Egypt in that list was because I had recently read an article which described an alarming increase in the level of persecution of Christians by Islamic militants in that country. While I did not intend to suggest that the Egyptian government itself was complicit in the attacks, it certainly came across that way, and so I apologize to those who took offense. The endemic sectarian violence that continues to wrack that beleaguered region has generated a tragic diaspora of Christians and other religious minorities and reminds us once again just how uniquely blessed we are to live in a nation that was founded by immigrants fleeing religious persecution. The Founding Fathers had the wisdom and vision to constitute a nation in which religious freedom is guaranteed. May it ever be so. Fr. Bruce

Thank You Fr. Bruce The Fil-Am Ministry of St. Kilian would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude and thanks to St. Kilian parishioners and staff, all our members and donors for their support and effort to make the 2016 Philippine Fiesta Night successful. During the Fiesta, the FAMSK kids, their parents and some members of the FAMSK Choir showed their appreciation to Fr. Bruce with a song complete with signs showing their love for Fr. Bruce. FAMSK also handed Fr. Bruce a token appreciation for his service to St. Kilian parish and FAMSK. Fr. Bruce showed a moment of elation when he received the adulation from the kids and members and the token appreciation. In addition, the VITA program received recognition from United Way, State Legislature and O.C. Supervisors, making Fr. Bruce, Fil-Am ministry and St. Kilian Church proud of the voluntary service our members and more do for the community. Here are just some of Fr. Bruce s accomplishments in his six years with the parish of St. Kilian.
