Stewardship in the parish Fifth Sunday of lent STEWARDSHIP Masses on March 26, 2017 Fourth Sunday of Lent Offertory: $7,140.77 Mercedarian Sisters: $5.00 E-Giving: $1,812.00 Burkina Faso: $25.00 Poor Box: $235.26 E-Giving Student Center: $240.00 Catholic Student Center (CSC): $52.24 Capital Campaign: $85.00 Sanctuary & Altar R&M: $10.00 Specified for Reserve: $200.00 STEWARDSHIP SPOTLIGHT - THE FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT The theme of this fifth Sunday of Lent in Year A is new life. All three readings focus on this. The first reading from Ezekiel is one of the most beautiful from the Old Testament, O my people, I will open your graves and have you rise from them I will put my spirit in you that you may live. The Jews at that time probably interpreted this as a promise to return to their land from their exile. However, we Christians see a greater meaning in terms of everlasting life and not earthly life. In the letter to the Romans, Paul says that If Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the spirit is alive because of righteousness, and If the Spirit of the one who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, the one who raised Christ from the dead will give life to your mortal bodies also, through his Spirit dwelling in you. The key to these readings is the Spirit of the Father (and Jesus) being with us and giving us life. Is this only eternal life? I believe that God is promising us real life now. I don t believe this is a promise of pain-free life, but a life that is worth living by loving and serving God. We all probably know people whose main goal is a life of pleasure and wealth with no pain and with no service to anyone but themselves. That is not our call. Through these last two weeks of Lent, let us read God s word, meditate on its meaning, and pray for guidance and strength to do God s will. What is God s will? Jesus said that the first commandment is to love God and the second is to love our neighbor. The Gospel story of the raising of Lazarus can be a challenge. At face value, Jesus raises his friend from the dead to reveal who he is, and his power and love. Some may ask, why good and holy people die today. To me, quite simply, if we do not die to this life, we cannot have the greater eternal life. There are many people who seem to have led only tragic, painful lives, and/or short lives. However, we cannot judge them or God s will from our human viewpoint. To me, the question is if the Spirit was with them and they did God s will in their difficult circumstances. The same is true for all of us, whether we live comfortable or painful lives. Do we truly surrender ourselves completely to the Father, as Jesus did, so that his Spirit in us gives our lives meaning and hope? Paul A. Gulig Chair, Stewardship Committee and Parish Council 4
