2. i. JESSE 2 TATOM, b. Bef. 1770, Sampson/Halifax County, NC; d. Bef. 1850, Bladen County, NC. 3. ii. JOSHUA TATOM. iii. LABAN TATOM. iv. RICHARD TATOM. 4. v. SUSANNAH TATOM. Generation No. 2 2. JESSE 2 TATOM (RICHARD 1 ) was born Bef. 1770 in Sampson/Halifax County, NC, and died Bef. 1850 in Bladen County, NC. He married CHARITY ELKINS in Sampson County, NC. She was born in Sampson County, NC. Notes for JESSE TATOM: Jesse Tatom was born in Halifax or Sampson County. He is the proven son of Richard Tatom. He moved and settled in NE Bladen County. He is proven to be the father of Olen Tatom through bible records. It is a certainty that Theophilus was also a son, since he and Olen are closely associated in many records. Also included in records with them were Clabourn, Owen, and Richard Tatom who were most likely children of Jesse also. Richard Tatom, Jesse' brother, was the only other Tatom in Bladen at the time and he did not live in the same area as Jesse. He lived on the other side of the Cape Fear near Robeson County. Therefore, it is fairly safe to assume that these 5 were Jesse's sons. Notes for CHARITY ELKINS: 1784-1800 Sampson County court minutes, page 117 15 February 1791 Child- Laban Tatum and William Blackburn having been heretofore bound in recognizance to indemnify the county and wardens thereof from the damage that may accrue for the maintenance of a child that Charity Elkins declares she is pregnant with, they come into court and acknowledge the same. Ordered that they, the said sureties, remain as such till the child is born. 10 May 1791 Child- Charity Elkins, being convened before this court on a charge of being delivered of a child and refused to declare the reputed father, whereof ordered she enter into bond in the sum of 100 pounds for the maintenance of said child. She tenders Jesse Tatum and John Vann as sureties who are approved. Ordered they enter into bond accordingly. Children of JESSE TATOM and CHARITY ELKINS are: 5. i. RICHARD 3 TATOM, b. Abt. 1800. ii. Notes for SUSAN ELIZABETH TATUM: From Lionel Melvin's book: Susan Elizabeth was a kindly lady who was always ready to help others in distress. Often, she was called upon by her cousin, Dr. Malcolm McInnis Tatum, to nurse his patients, and at one time was successful in saving a mother in childbirth when Dr. Tatum and Dr. Lyon had given up. This was Charity Armstrong, a cousin. More About SUSAN ELIZABETH TATUM: Burial: Luke Sykes Cemetery, Bladen County, NC Notes for JOHN WESLEY SYKES: Civil War record: Sikes, John Wesley, Corporal, Co. K, 18th Reg., born in Bladen County and was by occupation a farmer prior to enlisting in Bladen County at age 31, on May 13, 1861. Mustered in as Private and was promoted to Corporal on May 28, 1862. Present or accounted for until wounded in left arm/shoulder at Fredericksburg, Virginia, December 13, 1862. Report absent wounded until he was detailed for light duty in March - April, 1864. Reported absent on detail through February, 1865. From Lionel Melvin's book: John Wesley Sykes, like all three of his brothers served in the Confederate Army. He was wounded in the hard fought Battle of Fredericksburg and hospitalized in Richmond, Virginia, where his young wife, while expecting her first child, went and nursed him back to health. Years afterward, while attending a party in Chadbourn, NC, at the home of an old war comrade of his, his daughter Mae, was told by this comrade that in the thick of battle another comrade was wounded on the open battlefield and unable to seek safe cover, whereupon Sykes went out on the field and brought the wounded soldier back on his shoulders with enemy bullets in great numbers filling the air about him. In keeping with most war veterans, he seldom mentioned his battle experiences. He served 7 24 September 2008 9:55 AM

throughout the war, but after Fredericksburg, he was assigned to a troop in Bladen County to hunt down deserters and bandits who were terrorizing the countryside. At one time, he was on the firing squad which executed one of the criminals. After the war, he lived out his life on the part of the Salter-Sykes estate left him by his parents, which included the old home built by the Salters.
