INSTRUCTIONS or suggestions as to how to conduct this study. I can only suggest how this study was originally conducted and it was very successful. First of all, we tried to arrange a very informal atmosphere with the folks sitting in a loose circle. We would begin the session by having tea, or cokes and an informal time of fellowship. Then we would have a prayer time with everyone suggesting names of those for whom we should pray. It was also mentioned each session that we expected that each individual have at least one person for whom they would agree to pray for in regards to that person s salvation. To actually begin the study the entire chapter would be read aloud with each one willing to read, taking the number of verses and dividing it by the number of people present and each one reading a portion. Then the first one on the left (a habit of mine) would begin by reading the first question and giving their answer. The verse where their answer was found must also be given. Then the leader asks if everybody agrees. Let discussion carry on as necessary but not too long. Then go to the next question and the next person until all of the fifteen questions are answered. For the discussion questions (numbers 16-17-18) each person present should give their answer once again going from the first one on the left and so on. Answer one question at a time, with each person present giving their reasons for their answer to each question. Discussion can be long or short depending on how the group feels. Do not carry the class session on too long. Encourage each one to prepare his answers BEFORE the session begins if at all possible only because they will get more out of the discussion if they have thought about it. INTRODUCTION The word Deuteronomy actually means the second law. When the Children of Israel had wandered in the wilderness for 40 years, at the end of that time Moses gave his first speech. In it he reminded the people of God s goodness to them all through their journey in the desert, how God had led them out of Egypt and cared for them all this time. Moses s second speech was a summary of God s laws including the Ten Commandments. The conclusion of the book tells about the appointment of a leader to replace Moses and then tells about his death. Naturally Moses did NOT write about the last events.
DEUTERONOMY Chapter 01 1. Where were the Children of Israel when Moses made this first speech? 2. Who suggested the name of the leaders to help Moses with the heavy load of leadership? 3. What is the name of the first city that Moses names where they went through the desert? 4. Who did Moses say suggested the sending out of the 12 spies?. Verse 5. How long did Moses say they spent in Kadesh after the spies returned? 6. It takes 12 days to go from Horeb to Kadesh Barnea by the Mount Seir road. 7. The leaders chosen to help Moses were to judge cases between Israelites and aliens as well. 8. Moses reminded the people that only Caleb, Joshua, and himself would be allowed to enter the promised land of those 20 and over. 9. The people repented that they had rejected God and decided to go up and take the land. 10. God turned a deaf ear to the Israelites after they were defeated by the Amorites. 11. Had it been forty years exactly from the time they rejected God s plan and wandered in the wilderness and Moses made this speech? 12. Were they supposed to go as far as the great River Euphrates? 13. Did Moses realize that the load was too great for him to bear? 14. Did Moses tell the leaders that judgment belongs to him? 15. Did the Lord become angry with Moses also? 1

What did the Lord say about Sihon the Amonite king of Heshbon? 5. How many survivors were there among the Ammonites? Verse 6. The descendants of Esau were afraid of the Israelites. 7. The Emites used to live in Seir, but the descendants of Esau drove them out. 8. It took 36 years to journey from Kadesh Barnea until they crossed the Zered Valley by that time that generation of fighting men had died. 9. The Israelites were not to provoke anyone to go to war until they crossed the Arnon Gorge. 10. When the Israelites captured a city, they killed everyone, including children. How did God say he would bless them? 5. Why shouldn t these nations be destroyed all at one time? 6. The Israelites are called a treasured possession. 7. The Lord chose them because they were so many. 8. God s covenant is a covenant of faith. 9. God will eliminate even the survivors by poison snakes. 10. The golden idol is a detestable thing but the gold is not. 11. Are sacred stones, their altars and Asherah poles to be left as memorials? 12. Is God called faithful and awesome in this chapter? 13. Could wild animals be more of a threat than another nation? 14. Were they to utterly destroy ALL the people including children? 15. Were they to burn the images of their gods in the fire? 7
DEUTERONOMY Chapter 08 1. Why did Moses say that God led them in the wilderness for 40 years? 2. If man does not live on bread alone, what else does he live on?. Verse 3. What did Moses say could be dug out of the hills?. Verse 4. Who is it that gives the ability to produce wealth?. Verse 5. What did God promise if they followed other gods? 6. Their clothing did not wear out for 40 years. 7. God disciplined them as a mother does a daughter. 8. When they have eaten and are satisfied they are to praise their leader Moses. 9. God has given to them strength and power to subdue the land. 10. To forget the Lord and follow other gods will lead to their own destruction. 11. Is EVERY command to be followed? 12. Is it good for a father to discipline a son? 13. Will iron be found in the land? 14. Were there scorpions in the desert? 15. Is getting wealth a confirmation of God s covenant? 8
DEUTERONOMY Chapter 09 1. Describe the Anakites. 2. What was the reason that the Lord gave for having the Israelites drive out the inhabitants of the land across the Jordan?. Verse 3. Where was the Lord s anger against the Israelites to great that he almost destroyed them? 4. What were the two stone tablets given to Moses called? 5. Where else had they made the Lord angry? 6. Moses called his people stiff-necked. 7. The Lord gave Moses the two stone tablets on which the law was written. 8. The Lord also called these people stiff-necked indeed. 9. Moses also prayed for Aaron when the Lord was angry enough with him to destroy him. 10. Moses prayed to the Lord for forty days and forty nights so that He would not destroy a people who were stubborn, wicked and sinful. 11. Would it be the strength of the army of Israel that would win the land? 12. Did Moses either eat or drink as he prayed forty days and nights for the people of Israel? 13. Was Aaron guilty before the Lord because he made the golden calf? 14. Where were the people when they rebelled against the command of the Lord? 15. DEUTERONOMY Chapter 10 1. Why was Moses commanded to make two more stone tablets, and why make a chest of wood?. Verse 2. Who died at Moserah and who took his place?. Verse 3. Where were they when the Lord set apart the tribe of Levi?. Verse 4. List all the names of God in this chapter. 5. Why were the Children of Israel to love the alien? 6. Moses made two new tablets of stone and wrote the tem commandments on them. 7. Since the Levites did not have a share of the land, the Lord was to be their inheritance. 8. DEUTERONOMY Chapter 12 1. What were they to do with the sacred stones in the land? 2. Where were the Israelites to offer their sacrifices? 3. Who may eat meat anywhere in the land?. Verse 4. What were they commanded to do with the blood from animals killed anywhere in the land?. Verse 5. What was to happen to the blood of the sacrifices? 6. The Israelites were to worship the Lord in only one place selected by the Lord. 7. At the writing of this chapter everyone was doing as he saw fit. 8. The first fruits of their crops were to be eaten only at their own homes. 9. It is the Lord who will cut off the nations now living in the land. 10. The people in the land did detestable things when they worshiped. 11. Were they promised that they would live long if they obeyed the Lord s commands? 12. Is the land on the other side of the Jordan called the Good Land? 13. Are the Israelites commanded to love the Lord God with all their heart and soul? 14. Were the nations that lived in the land before them stronger than they were? 15. Did the inhabitants sacrifice their children to their gods? 12
DEUTERONOMY Chapter 13 1. How will God test his people? 2. Who are the ones who might entice a person to worship other gods? 3. What are they to do with people who try to get them to worship other gods? 4. What should they do to a town that follows other gods? 5. If a town is guilty of following other gods how long is it to remain condemned and not rebuilt?. Verse 6. If a prophet, even if his prophecy comes true, teaches that the people should follow other gods, he must be put to death. 7. The purpose of putting to death anyone who tries to get the people to follow other gods is to purge the evil from among them. 8. If a member of your own family tries to get you to follow other gods, that is all right. 9. By putting to death the guilty party all Israel would be afraid and not do it again. 10. Even the plunder of a town guilty of worshiping other gods must be burned. 11. Is trying to get people to worship other gods treason against God? 12. If a person from your own family tries to get you to worship other gods, is it your duty to be the first to throw a stone to kill that person? 13. Are all accusations against people worshiping other gods to be thoroughly investigated? 14. If they cleanse from their midst those who seek to lead others astray will God show them mercy? 15. Did God make an oath to their forefathers? 13
DEUTERONOMY Chapter 14 1. Who did God call his people? 2. Name the animals that they were allowed to eat. _ 3. Why could the people not eat fish with no scales?. Verse 4. What were they to do if the place was too far to carry their tithe of first fruits of the flock of the field?. Verse 5. How were the people to care for the Levites? 6. The people were told they could NOT cut themselves or shave the front of their heads for the dead? 7. The rabbit was designated a good food for the Israelites. 8. If they could not eat the meat they could not even touch the animal s carcasses. 9. If a clean animal was found dead, the people could eat it with pleasure. 10. The people were prohibited to cook a young goat in its mother s milk. 11. Did God feel that these people were special? 12. Did God say that pork is good for you if it is thoroughly cooked? 13. If the Israelite was prohibited from eating the meat of a dead animal was anyone else allowed to eat it? 14. If the designated place was too far, could they eat their tithe in their own home town? 15. Were the Levites, the aliens, and the fatherless and the widows all treated the same concerning the tithe set aside for them? 14
DEUTERONOMY Chapter 15 1. What was to happen to ALL debts every seven years? 2. What does God say about the poor in this chapter? 3. Why did God command that a slave be freed after seven years? 4. If a slave does not want to leave you after serving six years what are you to do with him or her?. Verse 5. What were they to do with the first born of their herds and flocks? 6. The Israelites could lend to other nations but not borrow from them. 7. They were to freely lend to a needy brother even though he was poor. 8. If they freed a slave they were to give him liberally from the flock and threshing floor and winepress. 9. The service of a slave for six years was worth only half that of someone hired. 10. If a firstborn lamb had a defect it could be eaten at home. 11. Were they told to forgive a debt of a foreigner? 12. Were blessings promised if they treated the poor in a good manner? 13. Were both the male and female slave to be treated the same if they chose to stay rather than be set free? 14. Would the freeing of a slave become a hardship to the owner? 15. Were they allowed to eat the blood of a sacrifice? 15
DEUTERONOMY Chapter 16 1. Why were they told to observe the Passover and when? 2. What kind of bread were they to eat during the celebration of the Passover and for how long? 3. How were they to use the meat that was left over on the next day after they had celebrated the Passover?. Verse 4. When were they to celebrate the Feast of Weeks?. Verse 5. What were all the men of Israel to do 3 times a year and when were they to do it? 6. The Israelites could observe the Passover in every city that they had been given in this new land. 7. A freewill offering was to be given by every person at the Feast of Weeks. 8. Only the Levites were required to celebrate the Feast of Tabernacles. 9. Judges were to be appointed in every city and they were not to accept a bribe. 10. God hates a wooden Asherah pole. 11. Was the unleavened bread called the bread of affliction? 12. Was Aaron to pick the city where these feasts were to be held? 13; Were all men required to celebrate all 3 of these feasts every year? 14. Was it allowed for a man to come before the Lord empty handed? 15. Was a judge to be allowed to show partiality in his judgement? 16
DEUTERONOMY Chapter 17 1. If a man or a woman is found bowing down to any other god what is to be done with him or her?. Verse 2. If the local judge in a city cannot decide a difficult case where must the case be taken to be settled?. Verse 3. Under what circumstance are people to be put to death in this chapter? _ 4. When they entered the land, who was going to choose a king to be over them? 5. What is to be taken by the king and read all the days of his life?. Verse 6. Even if a man or woman is guilty he cannot be put to death on the testimony of just 1 witness. 7. When someone is to be stoned anyone can throw the first stone. 8. The priests are the last court of appeal for them in difficult decisions. 9. The Lord knew that the people would demand a king to be over them. 10. The king was to be allowed as many wives as he wanted. 11. Were the people prohibited to worship the sun, moon and stars? 12. Did the Lord call worshiping another god, evil? 13. Were 3 kinds of cases to be brought before the judges? 14. Could a non Israelite ever be king over them? 15. Was greed on the part of the king to be allowed? 17
