The Sunday after Pascha St. Thomas Sunday John 20:19-31 The Apostles Commissioned 19 Then, the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst, and said to them, Peace be with you. 20 When He had said this, He showed them His hands and His side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. 21 So Jesus said to them again, Peace to you! As the Father has sent Me, I also send you. 22 And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them, Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained. Seeing and Believing 24 Now Thomas, called the Twin, one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. 25 The other disciples therefore said to him, We have seen the Lord. So he said to them, Unless I see in His hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and put my hand into His side, I will not believe. 26 And after eight days His disciples were again inside, and Thomas with them. Jesus came, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, Peace to you! 27 Then He said to Thomas, Reach your finger here, and look at My hands; and reach your hand here, and put it into My side. Do not be unbelieving, but believing. 28 And Thomas answered and said to Him, My Lord and my God! 29 Jesus said to him, Thomas, because you have seen Me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed. That You May Believe 30 And truly Jesus did many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book; 31 but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name. 5

Message from our Priests: There is a honest doubt that comes to someone who is uncertain, yet who admits that he/she may not have examined every side of the argument. Although this person expresses doubt, he still remains open to being proved wrong. He remains open to faith. He remains open to God s Holy Spirit. Yes, we may not be sure, but are we humble enough to learn, or to be corrected? In fact, do we hunger and desire to learn something new and grow in our faith? For example, do we want to use the opportunity and attend the lessons of the Catechetical school that are held in our church? In today s story, the Apostle Thomas doubt was surely of this type an honest doubt. He questioned the truth of Christ s Resurrection because he saw the gruesome death. Yet, he stayed open to being proved wrong. In fact, he wanted to be proven wrong. Remember, honest doubt can play an important role in increasing our faith! True faith rarely comes without questions, without struggles, without a sincere search and longing for truth. Honest doubt teaches us to stay humble, to learn and to grow. Without questions, we remain babies in our faith. The significance of St. Thomas doubt was that he remained open to God, and immediately changed his beliefs when proven wrong. Thomas didn t accept the witness of his friends, yet when he saw the Risen Christ a week later, he immediately believed and made the great profession of faith, My Lord and My God! His honest doubt opened the door to an increased faith, which led him to see his Master and teacher as his Lord and God! This revelation and renewed faith led the Apostle Thomas to travel as far as India in proclaiming the Good News of Christ s Resurrection and even die for that witness. Obviously, St. Thomas sincere and honest doubt led him to greater heights of faith. 6

The life of St. Apostle Thomas Thomas was one of the Twelve Apostles. Through his doubt in the Resurrection of Christ the Lord, a new proof was given of that wonderful and saving event. The resurrected Lord appeared to His disciples a second time, in order to convince Thomas. The Lord said to Thomas: Reach hither thy finger, and behold My hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into My side: and be not faithless, but believing. And Thomas replied: My Lord and my God (John 20:27-28). After the descent of the Holy Spirit, when the apostles cast lots to see where they would each go to preach, the lot fell to Thomas to go to India. He was a little saddened that he had to go so far away, but the Lord appeared to him and encouraged him. In India, St. Thomas converted many, both aristocrats and poor, to the Christian Faith, and established the Church there, appointing priests and bishops. Among others, Thomas converted two sisters to the Faith-Tertiana and Migdonia-both wives of Indian princes. Because of their faith, both sisters were ill-treated by their husbands, with whom they no longer wanted to live after their baptism. Eventually, they were allowed to go. Being freed of marriage, they lived God-pleasing lives until their repose. Dionysius and Pelagia were betrothed, but when they heard the apostolic preaching they did not marry, but devoted themselves to the ascetic life. Pelagia ended her life as a martyr for the Faith, and Dionysius was ordained a bishop by the apostle. Prince Mazdai, Tertiana's husband, whose son, Azan, was also baptized by Thomas, condemned the apostle to death. Mazdai sent five soldiers to kill Thomas. They ran him through with their five spears, and thus the Holy Apostle Thomas rendered his soul into the hands of Christ. Before his death, he and the other apostles were miraculously brought to Jerusalem for the burial of the Mostholy Theotokos. Arriving too late, he wept bitterly, and the tomb of the Holy Mostpure One was opened at his request. The Theotokos' body was not found in the tomb: the Lord had taken His Mother to His heavenly habitation. Thus, in his tardiness St. Thomas revealed to us the wondrous glorification of the Mother of God, just as he had once confirmed faith in the Resurrection of the Lord by his unbelief. He is commemorated on October 6/19 and on the Sunday after Easter. 7
