UNIT 19 Session 2 Use Week of: 2 Mary Praised God BIBLE PASSAGE: Luke 1:26-56 MAIN POINT: Jesus mother was Mary. KEY PASSAGE: 1 Timothy 1:15 BIG PICTURE QUESTION: What makes Jesus different? Jesus is God s One and Only Son. Then one day, Gabriel an angel of the Lord told a man that his wife, Elizabeth, was going to have a baby. The baby s name would be John. Then the angel Gabriel appeared to Mary and told her that she would have a baby, and her baby would be God s Son. Mary and Elizabeth were relatives. Elizabeth was old and barren; she and her husband, Zechariah, had no children. Mary was a young girl likely in her early teens. She was a virgin, engaged to be married to Joseph. The announcements of these pregnancies were miraculous for both women. Both babies had been foretold by the prophet 18 Preschool Leader Guide Unit 19 Session 2

Isaiah John in Isaiah 40:3 and Jesus in Isaiah 7:14. The angel Gabriel told Mary that Elizabeth was pregnant too, and Mary hurried to see her. The journey would not have been easy. Mary traveled nearly one hundred miles to see Elizabeth, and her arrival brought great joy to both Elizabeth and Elizabeth s unborn baby. In the presence of the unborn Messiah, John leaped in Elizabeth s womb. Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit, and she said, Mary, you are blessed! 2 The story of Mary s visit with Elizabeth gives us a remarkable picture of women living by faith. Being a young, unwed pregnant woman could have caused Mary to worry. Instead, her response is marked by her trust in God. Mary s song reflects her knowledge of God s Word and her understanding of who God is. Mary worshiped God because the coming of the promised Savior was good news! As you teach, remind preschoolers that people had been waiting hundreds of years for the Messiah. Being the mother of Jesus would be no small task, but Mary trusted that God was in charge. The BIBLE STORY Bible Storytelling Tips Act it out: Invite three small group leaders or preschoolers to pantomime the story as Mary, Elizabeth, and Gabriel while you read it aloud. Tell a monologue: Invite a teenager to class to dress up as Mary and tell the story as a monologue from Mary s perspective. Mary Praised God Luke 1:26-56 One day God sent an angel named Gabriel to a town in Galilee called Nazareth. The angel went to visit a young woman named Mary. She was engaged to be married to Joseph. The angel said to Mary, Be happy! God is happy with you. He is with you. Mary was afraid and did not understand. Why would God be happy with her? She hadn t done anything special. The angel said, Do not be afraid, Mary. He said that Mary was going to have a very special baby. The baby s name would be Jesus. The baby will be very important, the angel said. He will be a king! Mary asked the angel, How can that happen? The angel said, God will be the father of the baby. The baby will be God s Son. The angel Gabriel told Mary that her relative Elizabeth was going to have a baby, even though she was old and had never had any children. The angel said, God can do anything! Mary said, May everything you said happen. I am God s servant. Then the angel left. Mary hurried to Elizabeth s house. The baby in Elizabeth s belly leaped for joy! God s Spirit was with Elizabeth, and she said, God has blessed you, Mary! And He will bless your baby too. Mary was so happy. She praised God with a song about how great He is. God was going to do big things through Jesus. God 20 Preschool Leader Guide Unit 19 Session 2

would keep His promise to bless the whole world. Mary stayed with Elizabeth about three months, and then she went back home. Christ Connection: Mary wanted to do God s plan. Being Jesus mother would be hard, but she wanted God to be praised. Jesus also brought praise to His Father. He gave up His life and died on the cross to rescue people from sin. WANT TO DISCOVER GOD S WORD? GET MORE! Invite preschoolers to check out this week s devotionals to discover that Mary praised God for keeping His promise to send a Savior. Tell preschoolers that your class will fill the boxes with new diapers with help from the people in your church. Invite preschoolers to use markers and stickers to decorate the boxes. Place a sign on each box so church members will know its purpose. Lead preschoolers as you place the boxes in different areas around the church. Consider composing and distributing a flier, email, or social media update to let church members know about the project. SAY Being a mother is a tough job. Jesus mother was Mary. Snack Play the countdown video to signal the end of activities. Guide preschoolers to clean their areas. Take a restroom break and wash hands. Gather preschoolers for snack time. Thank God for the snack. Serve O-shaped cereal for snack. Explain that O-shaped cereal is a common snack for babies because they cannot chew other foods. Ask preschoolers to think about Jesus leaving His Father in heaven and coming down to earth, not even able to chew. Jesus brought praise to His Father in an even greater way than Mary did. He gave up His life and died on the cross to rescue people from sin. Transition When a child finishes her snack, guide her to throw away any trash. She may select a book or puzzle to examine, play quietly with play dough or a favorite toy, or color the Bible story coloring page. Mary was so happy that God planned to use her to keep His promise to bless the whole world. Pray for the children. SAY God, thank for You sending Jesus, Your One and Only Son to save us.
