From the Desk of Fr. Mike Dear Friends, I can t stop thinking about our parish s mission trip to Rockport. The hands and heart of St. Joe and St Vincent extend even to Texas. Our trip was not disaster tourism. We worked hard. By God s grace, our trip transformed the community there in some ways houses have roofs and walls that had gaping holes before, messes were cleaned up, and some people have an extra dose of hope that things will be okay. Talk about transformation! But the trip also transformed those of us who went. I am especially proud of the high schoolers. There were about ten. They worked hard. They didn t go to get Confirmation hours, or because they were forced to. They went because they want to serve. In that they offer us an important example. We will be sharing some of our reflections in the bulletins to come. I will share one here in this space now. It dawned on me during our trip: we never feel closer to other people than when we have a common mission. Our group had a blast together. I enjoyed praying and laughing and working along some wonderful people from our parishes here, from OLG, and from Texas. We felt truly this reality: we are the body of Christ. We are one. Folks never get any closer than when we are on a common mission. I pray this for our parishes as a whole. Our mission here it is to be Jesus. We were baptized into Jesus and that mission came with the deal. If we are all true to our mission, we grow closer to Jesus, but in so doing, we grow closer to each other. Imagine a circle. Jesus is in the middle, and we all form the edge of the circle. The closer we walk towards Jesus, the closer we get to each other. Friends: this is my dream for us all here for our families, our ministries, our parishes. My prayers and love! Fr. Mike Electronic Online Giving If you are signed up to give electronically online at St. Joseph, please check to make sure your electronic giving donation is still active and has not expired. It may need to be renewed. Thank you! Please call Rebecca at the Parish Office, 317-398-8227, if you have any questions. Catechesis Corner by Fr. Mike Confession Tip #5: It s All About Love! Some of us were taught a rule-based Christianity. But folks, Jesus wants our hearts! He wants a relationship! The rules, of course, are here to help. Read Psalm 119 it s all about how wonderful God is that he has given us rules to live by. But the rules are the end all. The rules help us to have a good relationship with Jesus! Confession is about restoring that relationship when we have messed it up. We mess it up by sinning, by choosing something else other than God. Confession is about restoring and refreshing that relationship. That s why we call it Reconciliation! There was a woman who converted to the Faith several years ago. After she went to confession for the first time and heard the Church s words of absolution for the first time being prayed over her, she said, I ve been waiting my whole life to hear those words. It s about relationship. More tips to come! Peace! Fr. St. Vincent News Sr. Joan s Corner Dear Parishioners, In this Sunday s readings, God is speaking and people are listening. God calls Samuel four times. Samuel gets help from Eli before he realizes that it is God who is calling him and is able to answer God with the response, Speak, Lord, your servant is listening. It isn t always easy to realize that God is calling. One has to be willing to listen. The Gospel is about another call, the call of the apostles. Jesus challenges the two disciples with the question, What are you looking for? This week as you take time to pray, spend most of your time listening to God rather than speaking. Begin your time with the phrase, Speak, Lord, your servant is listening? and you may hear an answer to the question, what are you looking for in your life? It may take several days or times of listening before you get an answer. Second Collection We will have a Second Collection at St. Joseph and St. Vincent Churches on Saturday, January 27th and Sunday, January 28th for the Propagation of the Faith Sunday. St. Joseph 150th Year History Even though Rev. Adelrich Kaelin, the first resident pastor of St. Joseph s guided the spiritual and material destiny of St. Joseph s parish for 31 years, records show it was under the administration of Father William Doyle from 1867 to the fall of 1869 that the first Catholic Church in Shelbyville was built. There were 35 families in the parish. The new church was blessed in June of 1868 and Mass was offered for the first time, although the building was not entirely completed. It seems the lack of funds and a debt of $2,800 halted completion of the structure. An old church record tells that Father Doyle succeeded in putting up walls, floors, windows, and roof, but was not able to complete the church for lack of funds. Ultimately, the church was sold by Sheriff s sale on February 19, 1873, and bought by the Rev. Father Rudolph, who was appointed pastor of the congregation on March 20, 1870. Under his pastorate, all debts were paid, the building completed, and a steeple added. With the growth of the parish to 50 families, the church became too small, so an addition was added. ---Information from Father Adelrick Kaelin s yearbook of 1903. Texas Mission Trip Photos and Reflections In the coming weeks, we will be sharing reflections and pictures from the St. Joe & St. Vincent Mission trip to Rockport, Texas to help with hurricane relief. This week, here is a group photo of most of the participants in front of St. Peter s, and a short reflection by Ethan Apsley. From Ethan Apsley (age 14): This trip changed my life. It was a real eye-opener for me. I have never seen this kind of destruction in person, and to think that the hurricane hit 6 months ago. One of my favorite parts of the trip was learning about the Vietnamese culture. One example was Mrs. Number Six, and that she was called that because she was sixth in the line of birth in her family. I also helped clean out the upper loft of the parish hall which was where all of St. Peter s Vietnamese New Year items were stored. Seeing all of the flags, banners, lanterns, and dragon costumes showed such a stark difference between our New Years fireworks and confetti. I also had the pleasure of spending time and becoming friends with Father Tran, the priest at St. Peter s. He is the most joyful person I have ever met, even after all the devastation to his church. He taught me a lot about love and one of the things he told me was that In love, the more you give, the more you receive which could not be more true for this trip. The last thing I said to him before we left was tạm biệt, goodbye in Vietnamese. Above: Stay tuned to GIANT FM...some members of the group shared their experience! Below: Ethan
