INTRODUCTION Please read the Romans 15:4 For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through endurance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope. To whom was the Old Testament written? Why was the Old Testament written? Old Testament events occurred to serve as types for us today to help us live a godly life. 1 Corinthians 10:6 As you read Revelation 21, there are many encouraging tidbits regarding heaven listed. But of interest to this study are verses 1-2, 10-13, and 21-27. What pictorially represents heaven in this passage? How many gates surrounded this heaven? What were the gates made of? What was inscribed on the gates? How shall anything, or anyone, enter into the New Jerusalem? So why study those 12 rascally sons of Jacob and the resulting 12 tribes of Israel? Looking at the genealogical chart, we see great granddad Abraham and Grandpa Isaac at the top of the hierarchy. But the father of the motley crew that we are going to study the next 13 weeks is Jacob. To get an exhaustive background check on Jacob it is best to read Genesis 25:19 Exodus 1:1 However without all the tangents and subplots, a thorough history can be had by reading Genesis 25:19-34; 27:1 35:26; 46:1 50:3 But for the purposes of simply getting a little history about Jacob, his two wives (Leah & Rachel) and his two concubines (almost like surrogate moms), Zilpah & Bilhah, each of whom are the parents of at least one of the 12 sons, read Genesis 29:15 30:24.

However, Jacob s death-bed scene where he gives the equivalent of his last will and testament will make up the most of our study over the next 13 weeks. Genesis 49 gives the account of Jacob gathering his sons to himself for two purposes: 1) in order to tell them what shall befall them (v. 1); and 2) to bless them (v. 28). As you read Genesis 49, we discover that only a redeeming God like ours would call Jacob s words a blessing. Make note of the words and phrases that would make you think of something other than happinesses! For example, you shall not excel v. 4. Or Cursed by their anger v. 7.

Started good, but made a poor choice at the end.) Exodus 2:11-25* Moses anger & protection seen (as you read this passage, note his hasty justice as well as his protective nature as demonstrated by his ancestor in Genesis 34.) Exodus 32 Godly zeal (consider the difference between the Genesis 34 incident with the Exodus 32 dealings. Why the difference assessments?) Numbers 2:10-34 Tabernacle Positions Numbers 3 4* Levites to be the Priests & particular duties required & their 1 st census

Numbers 16 Even the Priests went astray, & clearly Moses did not show favoritism to his beloved tribe! Interesting how this Old Testament passage seems to be expounding on the New Testament passage of Rev. 21:9-12) Luke 10:25-37 Levite not painted in the prettiest of pictures Acts 4:36; 9:26-27; 11:19-30* Barnabas (contrast Barnabas nature with how Jacob described the nature of Levites.) LEVI Small Group Questions As we read through the major points of Levi & the resulting tribes, was there any particular portion that spoke strongly of Christ to you? Or was there any insight on any contemporary issues? 1. Genesis 29:31-34 What were the circumstances surrounding Levi s birth? Was love or affection even mentioned or hoped for anymore? Perhaps her hopes and standards were lessening. Personal Discussion: Do you remember the circumstances around Leah and Jacob getting married (29:1-30)? Do you imagine the Leah was privy to the deceitful plan of her father? Have you ever had a scheme or plan cause more grief than it solved? 2. Revisit the incident of Genesis 34, especially noting Genesis 34:25. Then jump a few chapters to 49:5-7. Simeon and Levi were two peas in a pod. They were more than just blood brothers, they chose each other for best buds. In what ways did this friendship or brotherhood prove to be fatal? What did Jacob feel was the best extinguisher for the spark these two created when together? Personal Discussion: Jesus chose His friends carefully (take a gander at Luke 6:12-13 for an example). What kind of characteristics would be best for you to have in a friend? Is there a friend that may be provoking you to questionable schemes? (After all, it doesn t happen to just teenagers!) 3. Draw a family tree of Levi using Exodus 6:16-20; 15:20-21 & Numbers 26:59. From which branch of this family tree did high priests develop (Numbers 3:10)? Personal Discussion: What is your understanding of a priest in Old Testament times? How about in 2007? Read Hebrews 7:24 8:1; 9:11-14. Who is the High Priest being described in these passages? What consolation, if any, does that afford you? 4. From what tribe came John the Baptist (Luke 1:5-25, 27-66)? From what tribe came Jesus (Matthew 1:1-3)? Personal Discussion: John the Baptist may be considered the second fiddle and we all know that It takes more grace than tongue or pen can tell to play the second fiddle well! Is there a situation in life where others get credit for work you accomplished, or where you are more qualified, yet others are in charge? How do can you deal graciously with that? 5. As you read Numbers 3 4, to what position were the Levites called? What personal credentials or noble character qualified them for this privilege? Personal Discussion: What do you think of when serving God or a work for God is mentioned? What qualifications do you think are needed to serve as a priest for your neighbors, friends or spouse? Extra Credit Were you able to ascertain the meaning of the names of Levi s three sons and one daughter? How many cities were given to the Levites? (Numbers 35:7)

JUDAH Small Group Questions As we read through the major points of the major tribe of Judah, was there any particular portion that spoke strongly of Christ to you? Or was there any insight on any contemporary issues? 1. Genesis 29:31-35 What were the circumstances surrounding Judah s birth? Was love or affection even mentioned or hoped for anymore? What was Leah s focus? Personal Discussion: What is the difference between resignation and yielding? Was Leah merely resigning to the fact she would not be favored by Jacob, or did she really come to understand that yielding her expectations to God was where true contentment was found? Give a basis for your answer. Have you discovered the freedom of yielding? 2. Did Judah s brothers listen to him in Genesis 37:12-30? Did Jacob listen to Judah in Genesis 42:35-43:15? Did Joseph listen to Judah in Genesis 44:14-34? Personal Discussion: Can you think of someone in your life whose words you would stake your life on? Are you living the kind of life and speaking the sort of words that people would pay heed to your counsel? What area of your speech needs to be yielded (surrendered) to the Holy Spirit? 3. Lion is an animal that keeps getting associated with Judah. Just as a reference: 1) Jacob s blessing in Genesis 49:8-12; & 2) meaning of Othniel; & 3) 1 Samuel 17; & 4) 2 Samuel 23:20; & 5) Daniel 6 & 6) Revelation 5:5. How does the fact that Jesus is the Lion of the Tribe of Judah affect your life and heart? 4. Revisit the story of the 12 spies sent into Canaan (the Promised Land) found in Numbers 13 14. What spy was from the tribe of Judah? What does his name mean? And how did he respond to the situation? Personal Discussion: Can you recall a time in your life where the promises of God were so clear to you that nothing, or no one, could persuade you otherwise? Have you ever stood for what is right despite overt peer pressure? How does one remain bold in the face of fear and solitude? 5. Daniel 6 tells the heroic story of Daniel and lions. How is Daniel described? What provoked the satraps to begrudge Daniel? What did Daniel knowingly do to earn himself in the lair of the lions? ISSACHAR Small Group Questions As we read through the major points of the tribe of Issachar, was there any particular portion that spoke strongly of Christ to you? Or was there any insight on any contemporary issues? 1. The circumstances regarding Issachar s birth (and thus his name) are given in Genesis 30:14-18. What does his name mean? What is Leah s mindset as she names Issachar? Is her theology right at this point? Personal Discussion: The importance of a name Leah and Rachel named most of their children in relation to their envy towards one another. Names can be prophetic. What is your name? What names do you call yourself when you screw up or fail? What names do you think the Lord uses to refer to you? (Isaiah 62:1-6) 2. What animal is metaphorically used to depict Issachar in Jacob s blessing (Genesis 49:14-15)? How does Naboth, a man from the tribe of Issachar, demonstrate donkey-likeness in 1 Kings 21:1-16? Personal Discussion: Has there been characteristics in your life that God has harnessed and use for His glory? Or is there a trait you possess that you would love to see God transform into good? In what ways would you want to have the attributes of a donkey? 3. Judges 10:1-2 tells of a man from Issachar. Let s glean a few thoughts from these two verses. 1) After whose reign did he come on the scene? Judges 9:54-56 indicates what kind of reign the previous judge had? 2) What was the name of this man from Issachar? What does it mean? How does that compare with Jacob s blessing? Would you expect a man of that name to be a judge? 3) How did he become judge? Who do you think raised him up? 4) Three words summarize the tenor of his reign what are they? 5) How long did he reign? Personal Discussion: Only two verses were spent on the retelling of this man s 23-year long peaceful reign compared to the 57 verses on the wicked judge prior to him. Do you ever feel insufficiently appreciated for work you do? Do we spend more time discussing good news or bad? Why? 4. As David gathered supporters from the tribes, what is said of the men of Issachar? (1 Chronicles 12:32) Personal Discussion: The men of Issachar were marked with discernment. In what areas of your life is discernment desired? According to Hebrews 4:12 what can help us distinguish the best choice? 5. Two miracles of similar nature were done in the territory given to Issachar. 2 Kings 4:8-37 & Luke 7:11-16 give the details. What are the miracles? Personal Discussion: I often think of these resurrection incidents more of restoration accounts. Have you experienced restoration in your life? How can we participate in this kind of ministry to those around us?

Revelation 7:1-8* Who of Jacob s children are missing from this list As you read the passages involving Dan and his descendants, ask yourself 1) Do I see Jesus anywhere in this portion? 2) Does this passage speak to my life? 3) Is there topic in this account that is contemporary or pertinent to today? 4) Are there any characteristics that can be observed about Dan?

DAN Small Group Questions As we read through the major points of the tribe of Dan, was there any particular portion that spoke strongly of Christ to you? Or was there any insight on any contemporary issues? 1. The circumstances regarding Dan s birth are given in Genesis 30:1-6. What frame of mind was Rachel in when she came up with this scheme? What seems to be the most prominent emotion? How did Rachel interpret the circumstances of Dan s birth? Personal Discussion: Are there instances you recall where you've made decisions in a poor emotional frame of mind? How about times where you wanted something so bad that it sorely clouded your reason? As you look back on those decisions, how do you think you could have dealt differently with them? How does Proverbs 3:5-6 say we ought to make decisions? 2. Jacob s blessing to Dan starts out okay. But as he continues to talk about his serpent like qualities and the harm it will cause, even Jacob himself gets discouraged. How does he encourage himself in the midst of this bad news in Genesis 49:18 (16-18)? Personal Discussion: When in the midst of adverse circumstances or troubling thoughts, how can sanity be maintained? Three passages gives some insight as to what can help our anxious thoughts subside: Psalm 94:17-19; Philippians 4:4-7; & 1 Peter 5:7. Please take the challenge to commit one of these passages to memory. 3. Exodus tells of a man gifted by God to help in the work for the tabernacle (31:1-6; 35:34; 36:1-2; 38:23). What was his name and with whom did he work? What contrasts can be made in this pairing? How does Moses describe him? Personal Discussion: The phrases and words used to describe this artist are very encouraging. Can you think of anyone in your life that seems to fit this bill? What legacy would you desire to leave for those who follow after? 4. We have two stories of a mixed-religion marriage. Leviticus 24:11-23 & 2 Chronicles 2:11-18. Who were they, what was their parental heritage and what kind of legacy did they leave? Personal Discussion: Are there events in your background that haunt you or a parental heritage that you fear will define you? Are you afraid that your sins will be visited on your own children? These two men had the same background. One was a blasphemer and the other a beautifier of the Temple. It displays that background does not disqualify us, nor do the sins of our parents we can seek after Him no matter what we came from. 5. Amos 8:11-14 describes a different kind of famine. What is it? Personal Discussion: Are you feeling a famine in your life right now? For how long? How do you propose to address this hunger? Does Matthew 5:6; Isaiah 55:1-11 & Revelation 22:17, etc. give us hope?

GAD Small Group Questions As we read through the major points of the tribe of Gad, was there any particular portion that spoke strongly of Christ to you? Or was there any insight on any contemporary issues? 1. Jacob blesses (or prophesies) over Gad in Genesis 49:19. Why do you suppose he was blessed prior to his older brother, Naphtali? Personal Discussion: Have you ever experienced the prophecy regarding Gad in your own life? When have you had to go through much hardship before final triumph? 2. Gad seems to be separated from his fellow bond-brothers in Numbers 2 & 10. How is he different than the other 3 brothers, and why? What was particularly special about his position around the tabernacle? Personal Discussion: In what ways have you broken away from bad company or overcome a bondage in your life? How is the Lord using you now in the lives of your family and friends? 3. As you read Numbers 32, note particularly the order of Gad and Reuben in verses 1, 2, 6, 25, 29, 31, 33, 34/37. What peculiar pattern do you see in relation to these two tribes? Personal Discussion: Sometimes we may not be born with, or given, a particularly useful gift. But having friends who excel in areas different than you can be helpful. Name a few friends who have helped you overcome one problem or another by using their talents on your behalf. 4. Enlarge (open wide) is a key word found in Moses blessing of Gad (Deuteronomy 33:20-21). Consider the word for you in light of 1 Chronicles 4:10; Psalm 119:32; Psalm 81:10; 2 Corinthians 6:11-13; Personal Discussion: In what areas of your life do you desire to see God enlarge your borders, or your heart, or your mouth? 5. Mark 5:1-20 gives an incredible account of Jesus power over demons. How did the man from demoniac respond to being delivered? How did his fellow Gadites respond to Jesus? Personal Discussion: Leviticus 11:7 & Deuteronomy 14:8 gave instructions to the Israelites that pigs are an unclean animal and are not to be eaten or touched. What were the Gadites doing with 2,000 of them? And why did they seem to cherish the pigs more than the deliverance of a fellow brother of theirs? Is there something in our life that we value more than the deliverance of mankind?
