Supplications of the Hajj The supplications below are taken from the Book al-adhkâr by Imam al- Nawawi. Entering Ihrâm One should enter ihrâm after performing a ghusl, ritual bath with the adhkâr and supplications related to the acts of purification. The pilgrim then prays two ra ka of salâh reading Qul yâ ayuhal kâfirûn in the first and Qul huwallâhu Ahad in the second. One then intends to perform the Hajj by saying: نويت الحج وأحرمت به ه لل ع هزوجل I intend to perform the Hajj and have sanctified myself for it. It is also good if one says the following: الل ه هم لك أحرم نفسي وشعري وبشري ولحمي ودمي O Allah I have sanctified myself, my hair, my skin, my flesh and my blood. One then reads the talbiya, the call of response: لبيك الل ه هم ل هبيك ل هبيك ال شريك لك ل هبيك إن الحمد والنعمة لك والم ل ك ال شريك لك I am Yours O Allah, I am Yours, You have no partner, all praise is due to You, to You belongs everything and therein You have no partner. With the first call of the talbiya immediately after making intention one may say: ل هبيك الل ه هم بحجة ل هبيك ل هبيك ال شريك لك ل هبيك إن الحمد والنعمة لك والم ل ك ال شريك لك I am Yours O Allah, I am Yours coming to perform Hajj, You have no partner, all praise is due to You, to You belongs everything and therein You have no partner. One continues reading the talbiya call until one reaches the Ka ba, the Sacred House. It is sunna for a male to raise his voice when making talbiya. Both males and females should follow the third talbiya with salawât ala al-nabi, dua especially asking for Allah s pleasure (ridwân) and His garden (jannah). Entering Makka and seeing the Ka ba When the pilgrim enters the Sacred City, the pilgrim says: 1

O Allah, this is Your sanctuary and place of safety so sanctify me by preventing me from entering the Fire and make me safe from Your punishment on the Day on which You resurrect Your slaves and make me of Your friends and the people of Your obedience. Then one should supplicate for whatever one wishes. It is said that the heavens open when one sees the House of God for the first time. O Allah increase this house in honour, greatness, dignity and awe and increase whoever, among those who make pilgrimage to it, honours it and dignifies it in honour, dignity, greatness and righteousness. O Allah You are peace, from You is peace, enliven us with peace. And then one supplicates for whatever they want. The tawâf, circumambulation of the Ka ba One begins the tawâf at the Black Stone. One greets it saying: ب سم للا و للا أك ب ر الل ه م إيم انا ب ك و ت صد يقا ب ك تاب ك و و فاء ب ع ه د ك و ات باعا ل س ن ة ن ب ي ك صلى ه للا عليه وسلم In the name of Allah; Allah is greatest; O Allah, with faith in You, with belief in Your book, fulfilling Your covenant and following the way of Your Prophet, upon him be peace. One repeats this at the beginning of each circumambulation. It is sunna to say in the first three circumambulations: "الل ه م اج ع ل ه ح هجا م ب ر ورا وذن با م غ ف ورا و س ع يا م ش ك ورا " O Allah, make it an unblemished pilgrimage, with sins forgiven and a feat of gratitude. And in the last four to say: "الل ه م اغ ف ر و ار ح م و اع ف ع م ا ت ع ل م و أن ت األع ز األك ر م الل ه م ر ب نا آتنا في الد ن يا ح س ن ة وفي اآلخ رة ح س نة و ق نا ع ذ اب الن ار ". O Allah forgive and show mercy, pardon that which You know, You are the most mighty and most honourable. O Allah, our Lord, grant us goodness in 2

this world and goodness in the next and keep us from the punishment of the Fire. Hasan al-basri says that the last supplication is recommended in at least fifteen places in the pilgrimage, including the Sai, Mina, Arafat, Muzdalifa and when stoning the jamarât. Imam al-shâfi says the last supplication should be read throughout the pilgrimage. He also said that it is preferable to read Quran in the tawâf. After the tawâf, the pilgrim should pray two raka of prayer and make the following supplication: "الل ه م أ ن ا ع ب د ك و اب ن ع ب د ك أت ي ت ك ب ذ ن وب ك ث ير ة وأع مال س ي ئ ة و ه ذ ا م ق ام العائ ذ ب ك م ن الن ار فاغ ف ر لي إن ك أن ت الغ ف ور الر ح يم ". O Allah, I am Your slave, the child of Your slave, I have come with many sins and bad actions and this is the station that lifts from the Fire, so forgive me for You are the All-forgiving, All-merciful. If it is possible the pilgrim should go to the Hijr of Ismail and pray and supplicate and to supplicate at the Multazim which is between the Black Stone and the door of the Ka ba. The Sai The Sai is performed by moving between the foot of the hill of Safâ and the foot of the hill of Marwâ. One starts at Safâ and ends at Marwâ after moving between the two hills seven times. It is sunna to prolong the standing at Safâ and at Marwâ, glorify Allah and say: " للا أك ب ر للا أك ب ر للا أك ب ر و لل الح م د للا أك ب ر على ما ه د انا والح م د لل على ما أوالنا ال إ له إ ال للا و ح د ه ال ش ر يك ل ه ل ه الم ل ك و ل ه الح م د ي ح ي ي وي م يت ب ي د ه الخ ي ر و ه و على ك هل ش ي ء ق د ير ال إ له إ ال للا أنج ز و ع د ه و ن ص ر ع ب د ه و ه ز م األح ز اب و ح د ه ال إ ل ه إ ال للا و ال ن ع ب د إ ال إي اه م خ ل ص ين ل ه ال هدين و ل و ك ر ه الكاف ر ون الل ه م إ ن ك ق ل ت : اد ع ون ي أس ت ج ب ل ك م و إ ن ك ال ت خ ل ف الم يعاد وإن ي أسأل ك كما ه د ي ت ني ل إل س الم أن ال ت ن ز ع ه م ن ي حت ى ت ت و ف اني وأن ا م س ل م ". Allah is greatest! Allah is greatest! Allah is greatest! To Allah belongs all praise. Allah is greatest in that He guided us, all praise is to Allah over what He has entrusted us. There is no god but Allah alone without partner. To Him belongs the whole dominion and all praise. He brings to life and causes death. Goodness is in His Hands and He is over all things powerful. There is no god but Allah. He fulfilled his promise, assisted His slave and destroyed the parties alone. There is no god but Allah and we worship not but He, sincerely with the entire religion belonging to Him even if the disbelievers abhor it. O Allah You said and your words are true call me and I will answer you and surely You would not break your promise. So I therefore ask You to, just as You guided us to Islam, to not take it from me so that it remains in tact and I die as a Muslim. 3

ق 4 When one is moving between the two hills one should read: ر هب اغ ف ر و ار ح م و تجاو ز ع م ا ت ع ل م إن ك أن ت األع ز األك ر م الل ه م آت نا في الد ن يا ح س ن ة وف ي اآلخ ر ة ح س ن ة و ق ن ا ع ذ اب الن ا ر O Lord, forgive! Show mercy! Overlook that which You certainly know for You are the Most Mighty yet Most generous. O Allah, grant us goodnessin this world and in the goodness in the next and keep us from the punishment of the Fire. One of the supplications of the Sai which is appropriate in every place is: O Allah, O Turner of Hearts, make my heart firm upon Your religion. O Allah, I ask you those things that necessitate Your mercy and lead to Your forgiveness and safety from every sin and the prize of the Garden and deliverance from the Fire. O Allah, I ask You for guidance, righteousness, purity and wealth. O Allah, assist me in Your remembrance, expression of gratitude to You and Your worship. O Allah, I ask you for every good that which I know of and that which I do not! And I seek refuge in You from all evil that which I know of and that I do not! And I ask You for the Garden and all words and deeds which bring me close to it. And I seek refuge in You from the Fire and all words and deeds which bring me close to it. After completing the Sai, one leaves the state of Ihram by cutting one s hair or shaving in the case of men. This completes the Umra. If one is only performing the Hajj, one does not have to perform the Sai as the tawâf will be sufficient. One should leave Makka on the 8 th of Dhul Hijja and travel to Mina. When leaving for Mina, one should say: الل ه م إي اك أر ج و و ل ك أد ع و ف ب ل غ ن ي ص ال ح أم ل ي واغ ف ر ل ي ذ ن وب ي و ام ن ن ع لي ب ما م ن ن ت ب ه على أه ل طاع ت ك إن ك على ك هل ش ي ء ق د ير O Allah, in You I place my hope and upon You, I call. Allow me to fulfil my righteous aspirations. Forgive my sins. Bless me as You blessed the people of Your obedience. You have power over all things. When leaving for Arafât from Mina, one should say: 4

To You I direct my face and Your Noble Countenance is what I want. Make my sins forgiven and my Hajj a blessed one. Show me Mercy and do not leave me empty handed. You have power over all things. The most important supplication on Arafât is: ال إ له إ ال للا و ح د ه ال ش ر يك ل ه ل ه الم ل ك و ل ه الح م د و ه و على ك هل ش ي ء ق د ير There is not god but Allah alone without partner. To Him belongs the dominion and all praise and He has power over all things. It has also been narrated that the prayer that the Prophet, upon him be peace made most on Arafât was: "الل ه م ل ك الحمد كالذي نقول وخيرا مما نقول الل ه م ل ك ص الت ي و ن س ك ي و م ح ياي و م م ات ي وإل ي ك مآل ي و ل ك ر ب ت ر اثي الل ه م إني أع وذ ب ك م ن ع ذ اب الق ب ر و و س و س ة الص د ر و ش تات األم ر الل ه م إ ني أع وذ ب ك م ن ش هر ما تجيء به ال هريح ". O Allah, to You is all praise I make and better than the praise I offer. To You belongs my prayer and my sacrifice. From You, O my Lord, is my legacy. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the grave and whisperings of the breast and the disintegration of the affair. O Allah I seek refuge with You from all evil that comes with the wind. One should busy oneself with supplication on Arafât. Among the prayers that should be read in all places in the Hajj is: "الل ه م آت نا في الد ن يا ح س ن ة وف ي اآلخ ر ة ح س ن ة و ق نا ع ذ اب الن ار ". O Allah grant me goodness in this world and goodness in the next.. Allah says about these days: }فإذا أفض ت م م ن ع رفات فاذ ك ر وا للا ع ن د الم ش ع ر الح ر ام واذ ك ر وه كما ه داك م وإن ك ن ت م م ن ق ب له ل م ن الض ال ين ثم أفيض وا م ن ح ي ث أفاض الن اس واس ت غ ف ر وا ه للا إن ه للا غ ف ور ر حيم } 5

Then when ye pour down from (Mount) Arafat, celebrate the praises of Allah at the Sacred Monument, and celebrate His praises as He has directed you, even though, before this, ye went astray. (al-baqara 2:198) This verse refers to flowing from Arafât towards Muzdalifa where one spends the night in worship and then moving to the hill known as al-mash ar al-harâm in the morning. When leaving Arafât and during the rest of the night, it is recommended to read the talbiya, Quran and to supplicate and make remembrance Allah. This is the night prior to Eid and it is recommended that one spends it in worship and remembrance of Allah. The duas recommended above should be read here, especially: }ر ب ن ا آت نا ف ي الد ن يا ح س ضن ة وفي اآلخ رة ح س ن ة و ق نا ع ذاب الن ار } O my Lord grant me goodness in this world and goodness in the next. The following supplication has been narrated from the scholars: الل ه م إني أسأل ك أن ت ر ز ق ن ي في ه ذ ا الم كان ج وام ع الخ ي ر ك ل ه وأن ت ص ل ح شأن ي ك ل ه وأن ت ص ر ف ع ن ي الش ر ك ل ه فإن ه ال ي ف ع ل ذلك غ ي ر ك و ال ي ج ود ب ه إ ال أن ت O Allah, surely I ask you to provide for me, in this [sacred] place, the gathering together of all goodness and to put right my affair and repel from me all harm. For surely no one can do that other than You. And no one shows that generosity except You. It is sunna to pray the fajr prayer early and then to move to the hill known as al-mash ar al-harâm if this is possible. One may climb the hill or supplicate at the foot, saying: : الل ه م كما و ق ف ت نا ف يه وأر ي ت نا إ هياه ف و ف ق نا لذ ك ر ك كما ه د ي ت نا و اغ ف ر ل نا و ار ح من ا كما و ع د ت نا ب ق و ل ك و ق و ل ك الح هق: }فإذا أفض ت م م ن ع رفات فاذ ك ر وا للا ع ن د الم ش ع ر الح ر ام واذ ك ر وه كما ه داك م وإن ك ن ت م م ن ق ب له ل م ن الض ال ين ثم أفيض وا م ن ح ي ث أفاض الن اس واس ت غ ف ر وا ه للا إن ه للا غ ف ور ر حيم } O Allah, just as You enabled us to this and enabled us to remember You and how You guided us, forgive us and show us mercy as You promised us through Your words and Your words are true Then when ye pour down from (Mount) Arafat, celebrate the praises of Allah at the Sacred Monument, and celebrate His praises as He has directed you, even though, before this, ye went astray. 6

When leaving the Mash ar al-harâm, one should continue supplicating and reading the talbiya as this the last opportunity to make the talbiya in the Hajj. When one arrives in Mina, it is recommended to read: "الح م د لل ال ذي ب ل غ ن يها سال ما م عاف ى الل ه م ه ذ ه م ن ى ق د أت ي ت ها وأنا ع ب د ك وفي ق ب ض ت ك أسأل ك أن ت م ن ع لي ب م ا م ن ن ت به على أوليائ ك الل ه م إني أع وذ ب ك م ن الح ر مان و الم ص يب ة في د ين ي يا أر ح م الر اح م ين!" All praise is to Allah who allowed us to reach it safely and in a good state. O Allah this is Mina we have indeed come and I am Your slave in Your grasp I ask you to bestow blessings on me as you bestowed blessings on Your friends. O Allah I seek refuge in You from rejection and tribulations in my religion. O Most Merciful of Merciful Ones. At Mina, one stones the Jamara at Aqaba. It is not sunna to stand to supplicate. If you slaughter your sacrifice yourself, you should say: "ب س م للا و للا أك ب ر الل ه م ص ل على م ح م د وعلى آل ه وس لهم الل ه م م ن ك و إ ل ي ك ت ق ب ل م ن ي" In the name of Allah. Allah is greatest. O Allah send prayers and salutations upon Muhammad and his family. O Allah [everything] is from You and returns to You and so accept this from me. One should exit from ihrâm saying: الح م د ه لل على ما ه د انا والح م د لل على ما أن ع م ب ه ع ل ي نا الل ه م ه ذ ه ن اص ي تي ف ت ق ب ل م ن ي و اغ ف ر لي ذ ن وبي الل ه م اغ ف ر لي ولل م ح ل ق ين والم ق ص ر ين يا و اس ع الم غ ف ر ة! All praise is to Allah for the way He has guided us. All praise is to Allah or what he has bestowed upon us. O Allah this is my forelock accept it from me and forgive me my sins. O Allah forgiven those who shaved their heads and those who cut their hair O You who is generous in forgiveness. And after shaving one s head, one should say: : الح م د لل الذي ق ض ى ع ن ا ن س ك نا الل ه م ز د نا إيم انا و ي ق ينا و ت و ف يقا و ع ونا و اغ ف ر ل ن ا وآلبائ نا وأ م هات نا والم س ل مين أج م ع ين. 7

All praise is to Allah who completed for us the rites. O Allah, increase us in faith and certainty and enablement and divine assistance. Forgive us and our forefathers and foremothers and all Muslims. After leaving ihram one travels to Makka to do the tawâf and sai. The supplications for this have been discussed above. This only leaves the final days of the Hajj, which are called the Days of Tashrîq where the nights should be spent in Mina and the jamarât should be stoned on each of these days. Imâm al-nawawi says that these days should be spent in remembrance of Allah and he says the best of these is recitation of Quran. When stoning the jamarât it is sunna to face Makka and praise Allah, glorify Him and state His oneness and then supplicate at each of the first two pillars but not at the third. Before leaving Makka, one must circumambulate the Ka ba with the intention of tawâf al-wada (farewell tawaf). This should be your last act of worship in Makka and should be delayed as long as possible. After it one should supplicate with the following prayer "الل ه م الب ي ت ب ي ت ك و الع ب د ع ب د ك و اب ن ع بد ك واب ن أم ت ك ح م ل ت ن ي على ما س خ ر ت لي م ن خ ل ق ك حت ى س ي ر ت ني ف ي ب الد ك و ب ل غ ت ن ي ب ن ع م ت ك حت ى أع ن ت ن ي على ق ض اء م ناس ك ك فإن ك ن ت ر ض يت ع ن ي فاز د د عني ر ضا و إ ال ف م ن اآلن ق ب ل أن ي نأى ع ن ب ي ت ك د ار ي ه ذ ا أو ان ان ص ر افي إن أذ ن ت لي غ ي ر م س ت ب د ل ب ك و ال ب ب ي ت ك و ال ر اغ ب ع ن ك و ال ع ن ب ي ت ك الل ه م فأص ح ب ن ي العاف ي ة في ب د ن ي و الع ص م ة في د ين ي وأح س ن م ن ق ل ب ي و ار ز ق ن ي طاع ت ك ما أب ق ي ت ن ي واج م ع لي خ ي ر ي اآلخ رة والد ن يا إن ك على ك هل ش ي ء قد ير " O Allah! The House is Your House. The slave is Your slave and the son of Your slave. You brought me here by making subservient elements of Your creation so that I could travel to Your land. You made me reach Your favours and took care of me so I could complete Your rites. So, if You are pleased with me, increase that contentment with me and bless me now before my home calls me away from Your House and do not allow me departure if You allow me to leave a case of turning my back on You or on Your House or a desire for anything but You or Your House. O Allah! Provide me well being in my body and protection in my religion and make all turns of events good for me and provide me with [opportunities for] worshiping You for what remains of my life and gather for me the goodness of this world and the next for surely You have power over all things. May Allah accept your pilgrimage and that of all the Muslims. Âmîn. This completes the Hajj and after this one should visit the Prophet in Madina if you did not do this prior to the pilgrimage. 8
