SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME 3 Dear Family of faith, 2nd Sunday in Ordinary Time / Segundo Domingo de Tiempo Ordinario Today s readings remind us today of our unique vocation to holiness of life. All of us are called by God in a particular way for a particular purpose in life. In our first reading, we are reminded of the calling of Samuel. Here I am, cries aloud to Eli. After three times, Eli recognizes that Samuel may be called by the Lord; and so he instructs Samuel how to respond to God should he call him through his heart. Eli encourages Samuel to say, Speak Lord for your servant is listening. At times, all of us do not know how to recognize God s gentle call in directing our lives. Sometimes, we say, Listen Lord, for your servant is speaking! Too many times in prayer we speak, give praise and petitions to God for our needs; to give praise, thanks and ask for help is indeed good prayer and should be done. However, another aspect of daily prayer is simply to be present to God and listen to Him in quiet adoration. It is in the silence of the depths of our soul that prayer is born! Blessings, Fr. Tim Gadziala, JCL / Bendiciones, Padre Tim Gadziala, JCL Annual Mass Unborn The Archdiocese of Atlanta will celebrate the 29th Annual Mass Unborn on Monday, January 22 at 10:00am at the Cathedral of Christ the King, followed by the Stand For Life from 11:30am to 12:00pm and extends ½ mile along Peachtree Road. St. Peter s Catholic Church, LaGrange, Georgia 4 January 14, 2018 This Week At St. Peter s View our parish master calendar online at our website, or in our mobile app! You ve Got Questions? Why do we have a liturgical season called ordinary time? Can you explain? Ordinary time is the longest season of the liturgical year. It begins the Monday after January 6, the Epiphany, and goes until the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent. That period can last anywhere from five to eight weeks, depending on when Easter is celebrated. Ordinary time picks up again the Monday after Pentecost Sunday and lasts from twenty-three to twenty-seven weeks, until the end of the liturgical year, the Saturday before Advent begins. Why the name ordinary? "Ordinary" is not in contrast to "extraordinary" or "special" but rather stresses the Latin language notion of "ordinal" or numbered Sundays. The Latin title season, "tempus ordinarium," conveys the sense that this time of the year is measured or numbered time. Measured time can allude simply to the numbered Sundays, or the notion that these Sundays are a "measured" time to deepen and immerse ourselves completely in the realities of Jesus' incarnation, ministry, passion, death, and resurrection. Ordinary time offers us the measured opportunity to connect the ordinary lived experiences of our lives with those of Jesus, who modeled for us how to live a truly human existence. As we experience the season of ordinary time, let us immerse ourselves in the extraordinary task of deepening our relationship with Christ in the ordinary events of life. This year the theme of the Archbishop s Annual Appeal is Go, therefore, and make disciples. One way we can show our love to our brothers and sisters in faith is to generously respond to the Archbishop s request for a pledge to the 2018 Appeal. While much of the Church s ministry takes place in our parishes, we also come together as an archdiocesan Church to carry out critical services and ministries that have impact beyond any one parish. Your support of the Archbishop s Annual Appeal helps bring the spiritual and corporal works of mercy to live in your parish as a part of our overall effort to spread and deepen faith in the Merciful Lord throughout the archdiocese. Through your generous gifts we can continue the work we were called to do as Christians: educate our seminarians, support our retired priests, provide catechesis to our children, and protect the rights of the unborn. Commitment weekend will be February 3rd-4th. Please be generous in your response. For more information, or to donate online, go to appeal.archatl.com. Join us for donuts and coffee each Sunday morning following the 8:00am Mass in the Parish Hall. Conviva con nosotros con donas y café todos los domingo por la mañana después de la Misa de 8:00 am en el Salón Parroquial.

SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME 5 Calendar Planning Meeting We will have our semi-annual calendar planning meeting on Monday, January 22, in the Parish Hall following the Mass. All ministry heads with scheduled events should attend. Pope Francis Monthly Prayer Intention Each year, the Holy Father asks for our prayers for a specific intention each month. You are invited to answer the Holy Father s request and to join with the many people worldwide in praying for his intentions. This month we pray with Pope Francis that Christians, and other religious minorities in Asian countries, may be able to practice their faith in full freedom. Women s Retreat: Sitting With God Blessed Trinity Shrine Retreat in Fort Mitchell, Alabama is offering a Women s Retreat on January 19-21, 2018 entitled, Sitting with God: Touching the Real Divine. The retreat begins at 7:00pm (Eastern Time) on Friday, January 19 and concludes with dinner at noon on Sunday. For registration information call (334) 855-4474. Young Adult Ministry Are you looking to grow in your faith while connecting with other young adults in our parish? Our Young Adult Ministry meets once a month to bring together young adult Catholics from Heard, Troup, and Meriwether counties to share in faith, service, and fun. This month s gathering will take place on Friday, January 19th at 7:30pm. We will meet at Wild Leap Brew, 308 Main Street in LaGrange. Please join us for fun, food, and fellowship! First Reconciliation Time passes very quickly and our First Reconciliation sessions have already begun. If your child is due to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation, we are meeting each Sunday from January 7th through Janaury 28th during PREP, 9:30am to 10:45am. It is important that your child knows the following prayers: Sign of the Cross, Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be, and the Act of Contrition. Your child's attendance is mandatory in order to receive the sacrament this year. First Reconciliation will take place on Saturday, February 3rd, 2018 at 11:00am. Our catechists are very excited and ready to ensure your child is ready to receive the graces bestowed by God through this sacrament. Thank you for giving us the opportunity to share the joy of God's love, mercy, and forgiveness with your child. If you have any questions, please contact DRE Michael Barrett in the office.
