Today is the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ. At one time, this day was called Corpus Christi, the Latin words for the Body of Christ. In the most recent revision of our liturgical rites, the name for this day is expanded to be a more complete reflection of our Eucharistic theology. The Gospel for today reminds us that the Eucharist is a memorial of Christ's sacrifice on the cross. We believe that Jesus is truly present to us in the elements of bread and wine. Each time we celebrate this sacrament, we prepare for the Kingdom of God. This celebration, as the Second Vatican Council taught us, is the source and summit of the Christian life Loyola Press Parish Office email: churchoffice@stveronicassf.com

From the Pastor's Desk Dear St. Veronica Parishioners, Changes on the Finance Committee: Please welcome Tammi Grigg (27 years in finance and tax certified) and Roberto Nazario (25 years in financial services, Series 7, 24, 63 and IAR registrations ) who are joining the Finance Committee. I thank them for their spirit of availability and generosity. Their willingness to serve on this committee is indeed an expression of their love and appreciation for our parish. The outgoing Finance Committee members are Bill Gainey and Robert Vallecorse. I thank them for their time and talents in advising me about our finances. It is the responsibility of this committee to take a close monthly look at the finances of the school and parish and make the recommendations to provide for the various needs of the parish. While we seek first the things of the Kingdom of God, we have to provide for the maintenance of the parish property, run our ministries and organizations, pay the utility, cleaning, and repair bills, and pay the salaries & benefits of the parish employees. The whole parish community counts on your continued support and generosity through your weekly donations to help provide for the needs of our parish community. Q & A on Your Survey Feedback: I would like to draw your attention to the Questions and Answers on the back cover of this weekend s bulletin. These are comments from some of you about our parish property pavement project in our recent survey and the answers given to you in consultation with the Stewardship Committee, which includes the Finance Committee. Thank you for demonstrating your interest in our parish and its needs by bringing these questions to our notice. Capital Campaign Leaders: It is my pleasure to announce the names of three talented women who will be running the capital campaign for our pavement project: Tammi Grigg, Terri Ciardella, and Sharon Oosterman. Longtime parishioners, they educated their children in our parish school. Their faith, energy, charm, and persuasive powers are well known. They are excited about leading this campaign because they love this parish; they see clearly that we have to provide for the deferred maintenance needs of our parish; they are convinced, as we all are, that this campaign would be a powerful way we could bring people together in friendship and collaboration. Tammi, Sharon, and Terri will work closely with the stewardship committee and me. Let s give them our fullest possible support and make this campaign a big success. When this campaign is over, when the pavement is done, when we have addressed the needs of our physical plant, it would signal the message even more clearly that we are a positive, united, capable, talented, faith-filled, joyful, sharing community at St. Veronica parish. We care about who we are in this community. God bless our parish and keep us always in the hollow of His hand. Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ: When we attend the First Communion of the Second Graders, we become aware of their excitement, sense of wonder and awe, their faith and innocence, their love for being in communion with Jesus. These are the sentiments and insights we can recapture for ourselves as we celebrate the Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ, traditionally known as Corpus Christi. If we believe sincerely that Jesus is truly, really, and substantially present in the Eucharist, maybe we need to decide that we would go to this Eucharist week after week to be nourished by this most beautiful and fundamental sacrament. Maybe, we need to rearrange our lives and priorities to accommodate the Eucharist each weekend. Also, because of this Eucharistic meal, we the followers of Christ are all made into the body of Christ, with implications that we need to tend the community of believers by caring for their needs. The sharing of the body of Christ will lead us to the sharing of bread for the hungry of the world. The powerful words of St. John Chrysostom remind us of this caring for those out there who are longing for the ordinary, simple blessings: Do you want to honor Christ s body? Then do not scorn him in his nakedness, nor honor him here in the church with silken garments while neglecting him outside where he is cold and naked. For he who said: This is my body, and made it so by his words, also said: You saw me hungry and did not feed me, and inasmuch as you did not do it for one of these, the least of my brothers, you did not do it for me (Mat 25:34ff). What we do here in the church requires a pure heart, not special garments; what we do outside requires great dedication. Because of Jesus who becomes food for us, who becomes our Eucharistic meal, let s think about how we can in our turn become eucharist for one another. What would it mean? What forms of service and love would that entail? Your Friend and Pastor, Father Charles Puthota

Deferred Maintenance In-Pew Questions and Answers Q. How much is this project going to cost? The paving project is projected at $500,000 which allows for improvements to signage, overall grounds updating and unforeseen costs with regard to permits, fees, etc. To help keep costs down, the Archdiocese has identified areas that will not need to be fully excavated. Any excess funds would be used to address other deferred maintenance issues as identified by the recent Facility Condition Assessment Report. Q. Can the outstanding Parish Center loan be refinanced? The pros and cons of refinancing have been looked into. As only seven years remain on the 20-year loan, it is not fiscally prudent to refinance as there will be no significant savings and refinancing would only extend the life of the loan. Q. Can the Archdiocese help pay for this project? No. The Archdiocese is not in a position to assist as it has 90 parishes to oversee, most of which are addressing deferred maintenance projects. (See Catholic San Francisco issue of May 18, 2012, page 3 for more information). Keep in mind the AAA covers only 40% of the Archdiocese s operating costs. They too have had to make drastic cuts, now working with 40 less people on staff. This in the end affects services available to the Parishes throughout the Archdiocese. Q. Are only a select few helping to raise funds or will it be a community/parish wide effort? Everyone in the St. Veronica community is a stakeholder and is asked to actively participate in making this dream a reality. We have a team to lead the charge who will certainly be seeking volunteers to serve in various committees. The more the merrier! Q. Can the monies collected in the Second Collection for parish maintenance cover this cost? Unfortunately, the funds collected for parish maintenance barely cover the needs to address maintenance issues. All monies received from the collection are transferred into a separate maintenance account. Those funds are held until needed for repairs, maintenance, and upgrades throughout the parish. These funds do not go into the normal day-to-day operations of the parish. During 2011, $38,470 was collected for parish maintenance. When looking at a $500,000 expenditure, this won t go very far after necessary repairs are addressed. Q. Can the school now contribute the funds assigned for the roof repair which was donated? As a result of the recent generous donation, those funds can now be reallocated toward other school-related maintenance projects, which have been identified by the Archdiocese. Q. Can parish or school staff be reduced to afford this expenditure? Both the school and parish are operating with the staff necessary to address current needs. Reduction of staff would affect the quality of educational programs and parish services offered. Q. Can the Festival proceeds help fund this project? The proceeds from the Festival are factored into the operating budgets of both the Parish and the School. Also, the profitability of the Festival would not have a significant impact on this size project. It would be best to keep it in the operating budgets. Q. Can this project be done in sections (phases)? Absolutely! The recommendation of the Archdiocese is that the project be completed in phases so the overall financial impact is more manageable. The Committee is using that guideline in making its decisions. Phases will commence as soon as sufficient funds are collected to defray the cost. Thank you for taking the time to share your questions and concerns surrounding the deferred pavement project. We will continue to keep you appraised of significant news as it develops.
