SUNDAY, AUGUST 30, 2015 8:45 & 11 AM Sanctuary The 8:45 AM worship service is broadcast via 15-minute delay from 9-10 AM Sundays on WAPI-1070 AM. SERMON Rev. Brian Erickson MUSIC 8:45 & 11 AM Trinity Orchestra, Scott Brooks, Sanctuary Choir MINISTER ON CALL Bobby Scales, 746-4547 8:45 & 11:00 AM WESLEY HALL Rev. Nathan Carden AUGUST 16 - ATTENDANCE 1,491 Total Worship Attendance 969 Traditional 398 Contact 124 Nursery 749 Sunday School Attendance As a new member of the Trinity staff and congregational family, I have a few initial reactions I would like to share with each of you. Did you know that meeting and knowing the collective you is overwhelming? This is not because there are many of you, although that is a bit intimidating since I am not as freakishly good at remembering names as Brian. The truly overwhelming thing is the generosity that lives and grows within this family. There are entire non-profit agencies that focus completely on just one aspect of what this church does on a daily basis. Here are just a few examples: our ministry to support and love people who have earned the right to be called old or elder, providing children and youth a safe space to learn and grow, creating small spaces for people to share joys and challenges, delving into the complexities of providing financial assistance to those in our community who cannot pay this month s utility bill, and filling backpacks with food so that children can overcome obstacles and know that they are loved. To top it all off, despite the many different streams there does not seem to be dry spots or stagnant water, instead there is clearly one united river that has a strong current. That is overwhelming. PERSONAL WORD My first Sunday on staff was the day Jen Hatmaker spoke. I did not know who she was and I certainly did not anticipate the response you would have to the Backpack Ministry (which was launched that day). Since April 12, we have raised $27,831.00 for this ministry and we have gathered 45 committed volunteers. As you may recall, through the Weekender program at the Community Food Bank, it costs $4.50 to pay for one student to have a 5 pound grocery bag of food for the weekend. A family meal is also included, if the child is hungry how hungry do you think mom/ dad/grandparents will be (the ones who will not eat so that others can)? In May Homewood City School counselors informed us that we should expect to provide food for 56 students. So you do the math, I will give you a hint, the answer is overwhelming generosity. In response, we began to pray and discuss expanding to include another area where food insecurity is much more prevalent. We then learned about Hemphill Elementary School, which is located in the West End community, on the same block as Urban Ministry. Last year the Community Food Bank provided food for 65 Hemphill students K-5th. So we once again discovered, we can do this and have some left over. This sounds like Loaves and Fishes kind of stuff, doesn t it? Hemphill is excited to partner with us, and the Food Bank is floored by the generosity of the people of Trinity. Especially since they are now able to provide food to other students in another community that was not previously a part of their program. If you would like to contribute monetarily to this project, or if you would like to volunteer your time, please contact me at 879-1737 or kwalker@trinitybirmingham.com. Loaves and Fishes until every neighbor is fed! Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God s grace in its various forms. 1 Peter 4:10 I want you to know that Trinity s partnership with Panama is a wonderful thing. God is changing lives by the teams we send each year. And let me be clear about this, it has nothing to do with any of the individuals that we send but EVERYTHING about what GOD is DOING through us. We simply get to be a part of His plan and what a wonderful plan it is. My prayer is that Trinity will continue to partner with the people of Panama. All 10 of our team members were moved during our time spent there with our brothers and sisters in Christ. 4 Julie Adams, Internatinal Mission Coordinator jadams@trinitybirmingham.com September 16 4:45-6:15 pm Fellowship Hall September 16 Hamburgers, all the fixin s, Fries & Ranch Baked Beans, Fountain Drinks, Ice Cream Sundaes (Children & Adults) $20.00 Family Max.
