The Word Became Flesh The Book of John Lesson 18 Christ Promises the Holy Spirit and Predicts His Death and Resurrection John 15:26-16:33 REFLECTION Review John 15:1-25. How have your thoughts changed towards your relationship with Jesus? What decisions have you made in regards to abiding in Jesus, loving one another, or the hatred the world has for you as a believer? FOCUS VERSE And when He [the Holy Spirit] has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness and of judgment (John 16:8). SECTION 1 Jesus Promises the Holy Spirit Read John 15:26-16:4. 1. Who did Jesus say will be coming (vs. 26)? 1 Where did He come from? What did He do when He came? 2. What did Jesus say His disciples would be enabled to do (vs. 27)? Why? 3. What persecutions was Jesus preparing His disciples for (John 16:1-3)? Why did Jesus say these things would be done to them (See also John 15:21)? 1 Helper/Spirit of truth: names for the third Person of the Godhead.

4. Why did the Lord wait to tell His disciples these things (John 16:4)? LOOK DEEPER Relate how the apostle Paul persecuted the Church in the name of God before his conversion. Acts 26:1-11 I Corinthians 15:9 Galatians 1:13, 14 Read 2 Corinthians 4:7-11. How do Paul s words strengthen you in the midst of persecutions? SECTION 2 The Work of the Holy Spirit Read John 16:5-15. 1. What impending fact did Jesus remind His disciples of (vs. 5)? PERSONAL Why do you think Jesus said, sorrow has filled your heart (vs. 6)? What fills your heart with sorrow? 2

2. Why was it advantageous for Jesus to leave (vs. 7)? LOOK DEEPER What did the prophets in the Old Testament prophecy regarding the Holy Spirit and His work? Isaiah 44:3, 4 Ezekiel 36:26, 27 Joel 2:28, 29 Zechariah 4:6 How and when were these Scriptures fulfilled? Acts 1:1-8 2 3 Acts 2:1-4 4 5 6 Acts 10:44-46 7 2 power: force, miraculous power, ability abundance, might. 3 witnesses: martyrs; church tradition tells us that all of the disciples were martyrs (John died in exile). 4 divided tongues of fire: visual manifestation of God. Fire indicates the presence of God. God is a Consuming Fire (Deuteronomy 4:24). 5 tongues: the spiritual gift of speaking in a known language; foreign dialects. 6 Spirit gave... utterance: the Spirit enabled the disciples to speak languages unknown to them. 3

PERSONAL The disciples had the personal privilege of knowing and fellowshipping with Jesus. How has the Holy Spirit revealed Jesus Christ to your heart and throughout the world? 3. What is the work of the Helper and the reason for His work (John 16:8-11)? 1. 2. 3. 8 9 10 11 How has the Holy Spirit convinced you of: sin? righteousness? judgment? 4. Why couldn t the disciples bear any more of Christ s teachings at this time (vs. 16:12-15)? How would the Holy Spirit empower them? 7 Gentiles: anyone that is not a Jew; they were called dogs (Matthew 15:26) and unclean (Matthew 10:14). 8 convict: convince, reprove the world of sin. 9 sin: full payment that Christ made for all the sin of mankind. 10 righteousness: convince of the righteousness imparted to believers, brought about by Christ s sacrificial death on the cross for man s sin (Romans 1:17). 11 judgment: the defeat of Satan. 4

PERSONAL Have you received the Holy Spirit in your life? If you have not, ask Him to come upon you and empower you to serve Him. SECTION 3 Sorrow Will Turn to Joy Read John 16:16-33. 1. When would they see Jesus again (vs. 16-19)? 12 2. Why would the disciples be sorrowful (vs. 20-22)? How did Jesus illustrate the sorrow the disciples would soon go through? 3. What did Jesus then promise the disciples (vs. 23-28)? Why (See also John 15:11, John 17:13)? PERSONAL How have you experienced the fullness of joy even in the midst of intense sorrow? 12 a little while: Jesus was predicting His death. Also, He was prophesying of His resurrection and ministry among the disciples before His ascension to the Father, and after His ascension, through the work of the Holy Spirit. 5

What do you think were the emotions of Jesus at this time when He spoke to His disciples? 4. How did the disciples respond to Jesus words as He prepared them for His death (John 16:29, 31)? 5. Who was with Jesus when the disciples scattered and He was left alone (vs. 32)? How does this encourage you? PERSONAL Share how Jesus promise in verse 33 has helped and comforted you in an overwhelming situation? These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world. John 16:33 6
