The program included networking opportunities, welcome speeches, Vice Chancellor speech and Q/A session. The program started with the registration and networking session at 6:30 pm. The NEDEA Board members: Rashid Ahmed, Anees Ahmad, Syed Naeemuddin, Bilal Ahmad, and Syed Shahid Ali greeted all the guests. Anees Ahmad was the master of ceremony. He welcomed the Guest of Honor, Honorable Vice Chancellor of NED, Engineer Abul Kalam, his wife and son. He also welcomed all the distinguished guests and members. Khairulbashar Siddiqui recited a few verses from the Holy Quran. Rashid Ahmed mentioned in his speech that Engineer Abul Kalam has been the Vice Chancellor of NED since 1996 and in 15 years the growth of NED University has been phenomenal. The number of departments has grown from 4 to 24 and the number of graduating students has grown from 350 per year to over 1800 per year. This growth has happened because the VC Abul Kalam has the ability, has the commitment, and above all has the courage to stand up for the better future of NED. Khawaja Nizamuddin went over the mission statement of NEDEA and updated the audience about NEDEA activities. NEDEA has provided the platform to promote friendly relations and understanding among the NEDians. It also provided the networking and employment assistance for its members. It also arranges social and cultural programs and provides opportunity for family entertainment. It also provides a forum for business and professional development. Anis Paya went over the overview of NED Alumni Convention held in Chicago in July 2010. Anis introduced the Convention Steering Committee members comprised of Anis Paya, Khawaja Nizamuddin, Afzaal Hafeez, Tanweer Mallick, Khairulbashar Siddiqui, Rashid Ahmed, Imtiaz Rehman, Haroon Sheikh, Mohammed Yousuf and Nafis Hyder. Anis mentioned that it was a big undertaking for him, but with the great help of Steering Committee, the convention was a big success. 1
Tanweer Mallick updated the audience about NEDIAN NA activities. NEDIAN NA stands for NED International Alumni Network North America. Tanweer discussed the mission and vision statements of this umbrella organization. He mentioned that at the last convention this umbrella organization was founded and a declaration was signed by eight NED alumni associations from different cities of USA and Canada. Vice Chancellor, Abul Kalam, updated the audience about the current status of NED. He mentioned that now NED offers undergraduate degree in 24 disciplines. VC made a short speech and spent most of the time answering questions. He mentioned that many students at NED now work as interns while studying at NED to gain practical experience. NED is also providing consulting/research services to the industry and recently, NED has designed a water reclamation plant where 18,000 gallons of water are reclaimed every day. The Civil Engineering department is doing a lot of research in the Seismic area. The audience was very impressed with the achievements and leadership quality of Engineer Abul Kalam. After the speeches, a plaque award was given to VC Abul Kalam from NED Engineers Association of Chicago. Dinner was served at 9:00 pm. After dinner, Hashmat Sohail shared his humorous poetry in Urdu and Abdul Badruddin shared a few family jokes. The program ended around 11:00 pm. The attendees were greatly pleased with the well coordinated event. 2
