Integral Leadership Program 2016 Summer Leadership Series Our world calls for a new paradigm of leadership. At Esalen, we believe that leadership is about being of service to the world and helping humanity to realize its fuller potential. Esalen s Integral Leadership Program provides students with the opportunity to supplement university learning with an unparalleled immersion into the Esalen experience. This June, Esalen offers its annual ILP Summer Leadership Series, showcasing the talents of faculty from a diverse array of backgrounds, passions and disciplines. These include: Brad Lewis, Adam Wolpert, George Kohlrieser, Caroline Harvey, Peter Meyers, and Branan Freeman. We hold the firm belief that everyone is capable of the extraordinary, and that each of us is using only a small part of our innate, creative human potential in every day life. In our experience, profound and transformational change is sparked through development of all the dimensions of our natural human capacities: mind, body, spirit, heart, and community. Our ILP curriculum integrates those dimensions and focuses on critical skills for today s leaders: emotional intelligence, selfexpression, ecological awareness, conflict resolution. The livinglearning lab at Esalen is truly an experience unlike any other. This is our gift and our hope for the future. Esalen s integral, living-andlearning educational model combines classroom experiences and transformative practices with communal work and living, guided by the idea that the mental and physical dimensions of the self, other, and land are inextricably linked. The Integral Leadership Program is open to universityenrolled, college-bound, gap-year students, and recent graduates. Participants will receive a certificate upon completion. Many schools offer credit for the Integral Leadership Program. Speak to your professor or external studies department to see if you qualify.

Summer Leadership Series June 5-July 3, 2016 Embodied Leadership in a Disembodied with World Brad with Lewis Don Hanlon Johnson WORK STUDY PROGRAM: Bhagavad-Gita: Wisdom, Literature and Leadership The Bhagavad-Gita is the most popular and widely studied of the Hindu scriptures. Plus, it has become a classic of world literature, inspiring such diverse writers and artists as Ralph Waldo Emerson, Walt Whitman, T.S. Eliot, Phillip Glass, Anita Desai, and Chitra Divakaruni. Most recently, it has become an invaluable resource for developing cross-cultural principles of management, leadership, and positive psychology. Bradley Lewis, New York University cultural studies professor and practicing psychiatrist, leads this program. The month is devoted to an appreciative and critical study of the Gita s lessons. When you pick up a copy of the Gita, it is encouragingly slim and may seem like a quick read. But if you delve into its philosophy for living, wisdom, and meaning, you'll find that it is a most enriching companion and a lifelong friend worthy of careful and detailed study. As Mahatma Gandhi put it: When doubts haunt me, when disappointments stare me in the face, and I see no ray of hope on the horizon, I turn to the Bhagavad-Gita. Our Work Study program approaches the Bhagavad Gita through dialogic and participatory spirituality. It includes the following activities: Appreciative and critical reading and discussion focusing on personal, political, and philosophic dimensions of the text Spiritual and experiential exercises inspired by the Gita (yoga, meditation, chanting) Creative arts and expression inspired by the Gita (memoir, music, visual arts, opera, film) Engaged spiritual practice by applying wisdom gleaned from the Gita to larger work study activities Journal writing and journal sharing of our processes together 3

Esalen Summer Institute s Integral Leadership Leadership Program Series 2016 June 5-July 3, 2016 Collaborative Leadership, Ecological Consciousness and Creative Self-Expression with Adam Wolpert LEGACY PROGRAM: Skillful collaboration is facilitated by an open mind and heart, keen powers of observation of self and others, compassionate communication, a whole-systems view, and a willingness to witness and experience transformation. This program, led by artist and facilitator Adam Wolpert, will promote these qualities while enhancing leadership skills, self-awareness, and capacity to contribute to positive change at any scale. Participants will tap into their direct experience with creative practices and deepened ecological consciousness as sources of wisdom and guidance for group work. Under this guidance, they will learn a host of practical skills and useful perspectives that support collaborative participation in groups. Dynamic group exercises, presentation and deep dialogue will all be employed to facilitate comprehensive learning. Participants can expect to: Practice and learn from creative self-expression Learn to think in terms of whole systems Learn compassionate communication skills Cultivate ecological consciousness Be introduced to the fundamentals of permaculture as they relate to human collaboration Explore and understand group dynamics Connect with their own intuition, inspiration, and vision 4

Summer Leadership Series July 3 July 31, 2016 High Performance Embodied Leadership: Leadership in a Your Disembodied Full Potential, World with with George Don Hanlon Kohlrieser Johnson How to Unleash WORK STUDY PROGRAM: Why do some leaders overcome impossible barriers, go beyond unbearable pressure and frustration, and persevere in order to achieve extraordinary outcomes in situations where others would give up? The answer to that question has never been clearer. Through their desire for relentless improvement, leaders at the edge can unlock the highest levels of performance from themselves and others, making work a more exciting place to be for themselves and those around them. Leading at the edge enables people to "play to win" rather than simply "playing not to lose." It is a profound process of leading oneself and others. People are facing intense pressure like never before. There are so many complex changes and challenges today, which create the necessity for high levels of engagement to reach high performance. Drawing on research on high performance from the world of sports, business, medicine, music, theater, military, and hostage negotiation, George Kohlrieser will lead participants through mini theory presentations, action learning, group process, role playing, and action planning designed to foster cutting-edge leadership skills, including how to take appropriate risk, inspire trust, drive change, and create opportunities to foster success for themselves, their teams, and their organizations. Summer Leadership Series July 3-31, 2016 Tongue and Pen: Spoken Word at the Edge of Poetic Experience, with Caroline Harvey LEGACY PROGRAM: There are truths bellowing from our bones, stories nudging up from the root and into the mouth, Caroline Harvey writes. We cradle these stories under our tongues, aching to communicate authentically, longing for vibrant engagement with our beloved world. But we ve received mixed messages: maybe we were told to stay quiet, that we were too much ; maybe our stories are traumatic, so we locked them away. Doubts emerge: Is my truth welcome? Can I say this aloud? This course invites safe vulnerability, encouraging a confidence that yes, your voice counts, and yes, no matter what came before, there s a community that welcomes your honest word. We ll pursue critical leadership skills including creative expression, compassion, cultural competency, and more. To do this, we ll address our silencing mechanisms, discover our urgent stories, and sculpt conscious dialog. We ll examine traditional and contemporary poetry; investigate Guerilla Theater; explore writing prompts and mindfulness; and create original Spoken Word. You ll have a tremendous opportunity to embody new conviction as a leader, and be better equipped to communicate, wherever you are. 6

Summer Leadership Series July 31-August 28, 2016 Performance Embodied Theater, Leadership with in a Peter Meyers Disembodied World with Don Hanlon WORK STUDY PROGRAM: Johnson To create lasting transformation in any environment, we need to first transform our ideas of leadership and performance. Luckily, the latest discoveries in technology, nature, and systems theory give us an entirely new model of both performance and leadership a model that is not dependent on the decisions of a single charismatic leader but the collective wisdom that picks up and follows the pulse of the group. As in jazz improvisation, this new model involves a constant giving and taking, a process in which everyone contributes and the dross falls away. When we find the connections between one another and follow what is present, the interdependence of all things guides us. It is in those moments of responsiveness, agility, and generosity that a unique bond of trust is formed and the creative contributions of the group emerge sometimes as chaos and sometimes as sublime. Nowhere is this more evident than in the performing arts, where the principles of ensemble-theater (working as a group) have been practiced, developed, and demonstrated on stages for centuries. What can the theater teach us about ways to channel the collective wisdom of the group for new ideas and breakthrough performance? The program will focus on developing presence, creativity and leadership. Recommended reading: Meyers, As We Speak: How to Make Your Point and Have it Stick. 7

Esalen Summer Institute s Integral Leadership Leadership Program Series 2016 July 31-August 28, 2016 Exploring Symbol and Personal Meaning through Artistic Expression, with Branan Freeman LEGACY PROGRAM: During this month-long artistic journey led by Branan Freeman, you will immerse yourself in the stunning Big Sur landscape as you explore personal connections to symbols and archetypal imagery related to nature, animals, and organic and geometric shapes. As you uncover and create meaning based on the images most potent to you, you can develop your own personal mythology by discovering and reflecting aspects of yourself through your creations. This art practice will be a form of mindfulness as the group engages in a variety of approaches and media, including printmaking, drawing and painting, nature-journaling, and collage. You will explore key conscious leadership skills, including self-expression, compassion, and ecological awareness, throughout the art-making process. You will come together each session for hands-on studio art time and will also take time as a group during the month for shared discussion about your art and art-making experience and a final group project. All experience levels are welcome. No art background is necessary, and the course embraces beginner s mind as all participants learn through observation, practice, and artistic risk taking in a supportive environment. The group will work indoors and outdoors and will explore the farm, garden and local landscape for inspiration, thus broadening our ecological awareness and enhancing our creations.
