WE REJOICE IN OUR DUAL CITIZENSHIP July 2, 2017 WELCOME TO ST. JOHN S We re thrilled that you are here today. Please sign the Friendship Register at the end of your pew so that we have a record of your visit. And please come and worship with us again. Please also introduce yourself to Pastor Maglietto. He would love to meet you and to serve you in whatever way he can. OUR FACILITIES Our restrooms are located to the right as you leave the sanctuary in the Mother s Room and downstairs next to the exit. The members of St. John s believe that families should be encouraged to worship together. (Church, like much of life, needs to be taught to young children.) If your young one needs some time out, we have an audio-equipped Mother s Room just outside the sanctuary to your right. If you need anything during the service, please feel free to ask an usher. THOUGHT FOR THE DAY America's moral decay is perhaps not so surprising in a world dominated by sin. We are tempted to become discouraged and to seek solutions in mere human beings. Yet the one true God is still the Lord of all. His Word still works on sin-hardened hearts. His church will endure. We have his promise! PRAYER BEFORE WORSHIP Lord, keep this nation under your care. Bless the leaders of our land that we may be a people at peace among ourselves and a blessing to other nations of the earth. Help us elect trustworthy leaders, contribute to wise decisions for the general welfare, and serve you faithfully in our generation to the honor of your holy name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. 1

INVOCATION M: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: In God we trust! Amen. CONFESSION OF SINS M: Jesus said, If you continue in my word you are truly my disciples; and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free. C: It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. M: Yet, we have not always lived in the freedom that Christ gives us. We have too often remained slaves to sin. Let us confess our sins to the Lord. C: Merciful God, you have blessed us so greatly through your Son and through this great nation. And yet, we take your blessings and use them to sin. We allow the wealth you give us to distract us from what is truly needful. We are poor caretakers of your bounty, wasteful and careless. We use the freedoms you grant us as license to do whatever we please. M: We have no right to live this way, King of Nations, for we are people under your rule, and you have commanded us to be holy. Forgive us, Lord, for the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ. C: Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner. ABSOLUTION M: Be at peace. The Lord declares you righteous, forgiven of all your sins. His son, Jesus Christ, battled and defeated the enemy and paid the price so that you might be free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery. C: The truth has made us free! 3

SONG America, the Beautiful O beautiful for spacious skies, for amber waves of grain, For purple mountain majesties above the fruited plain. America! America! God shed his grace on thee And crown thy good, with brotherhood from sea to shining sea! O beautiful for pilgrim feet, whose stern, impassioned stress, A thoroughfare for freedom beat across the wilderness America! America! God mend thine every flaw, Confirm the soul in self-control, thy liberty in law. O beautiful for glorious tale of liberating strife, When valiantly for men's avail, Christ gave his sinless life. America! America! May God our hearts refine, Till all success be righteousness and ev'ry action shine. PRAYER OF THE DAY M: The Lord be with you M: Let us pray. Lord, keep this nation under your care. Bless the leaders of our land that we may be people at peace among ourselves and a blessing to other nations of the earth. Help us elect trustworthy leaders, contribute to wise decisions for the general welfare, and serve you faithfully in our generation to the honor of your holy name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. 4

VBS SONGS Let your light shine in the nighttime. Let it shine all the day through. Shine for Jesus. Let it shine, shine on you. Let Your Light & Trust in the Lord I was walkin alone in the nighttime I did not know, which way to go Then the Lord, He turned the light on. He saved my life, and he saved my soul. So REFRAIN Now I m livin, for just one purpose; To let the Lord, shine through me. May his light, shine on others. May his Spirit set them free. So REFRAIN Trust in the Lord and do good and he will make your righteousness shine like the dawn. Delight yourself in the Lord and he will make your righteousness shine like the dawn. Commit your way to the Lord and he will make your righteousness shine like the dawn Trust in the Lord and do good and he will make your righteousness shine like the dawn. GOSPEL Matthew 22:15-21 15 Then the Pharisees went out and laid plans to trap him in his words. 16 They sent their disciples to him along with the Herodians. Teacher, they said, we know you are a man of integrity and that you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. You aren t swayed by men, because you pay no attention to who they are. 17 Tell us then, what is your opinion? Is it right to pay taxes to Caesar or not? 18 But Jesus, knowing their evil intent, said, You hypocrites, why are you trying to trap me? 19 Show me the coin used for paying the tax. They brought him a denarius, 20 and he asked them, Whose portrait is this? And whose inscription? 21 Caesar s, they replied. Then he said to them, Give to Caesar what is Caesar s, and to God what is God s. (NIV84) 5

NICENE CREED We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary, and became fully human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. SERMON 1 Peter 2:13-17 Good Christians are Good Citizens 13 Submit yourselves for the Lord s sake to every authority instituted among men: whether to the king, as the supreme authority, 14 or to governors, who are sent by him to punish those who do wrong and to commend those who do right. 15 For it is God s will that by doing good you should silence the ignorant talk of foolish men. 16 Live as free men, but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil; live as servants of God. 17 Show proper respect to everyone: Love the brotherhood of believers, fear God, honor the king. (NIV84) PLEASE STAND CREATE IN ME Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from your presence, and take not your Holy Spirit from me. Restore unto me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with your free Spirit. Amen. PLEASE BE SEATED THANK OFFERING 8

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH M: Almighty God, we acknowledge with thanks that all we have and enjoy is a gift from your gracious hand. We come before you today in heartfelt appreciation for our nation and its people. C: We thank you for enabling us to worship you in freedom and to serve you without fear. M: You have enriched us with the bounties of farm and factory, the beauty of forest and mountain, and the marvels of medicine and science. C: For all these blessings, we praise and glorify you. M: Look with favor upon our nation, and preserve our cherished liberties. Enable our leaders to govern with wisdom, honesty, courage, and justice. Protect those who serve in the armed forces and those who maintain peace and safety in our communities. C: Give us willingness to obey our nation s laws and to work for the common good. M: Keep our financial institutions secure and our economy strong. Bless our fields that they may produce abundant harvests. Guard us from calamities of nature and accident, and spare our land from the ravages of disease and epidemic. C: Teach us not to worry but to cast all our cares on you. M: Strengthen the homes of our nation. By your Spirit lead husbands and wives to love each other, parents to nurture their children, young adults to assume responsibility, and children to show respect. Special prayers and intercessions may follow. M: To you, O Lord, we bring our thanks and our requests. C: Hear our prayers for Jesus sake. Amen. LORD S PRAYER Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen. 9

Our Congregation practices the biblical practice of Close Communion. The Bible teaches that communing together signifies a oneness in faith, life, and worship. Reception of the Lord s Supper by Christians not fully united with us would imply a oneness that does not exist. Therefore, we kindly ask that if you are not a member of St. John s or a sister WELS or ELS congregation, that you do not commune with us today. If you have any questions, please speak with the pastor and he will be happy answer them. THE SACRAMENT PREFACE M: The Lord be with you. M: Lift up your hearts. M: Let us give thanks to the Lord, our God. M: It is truly good and right that we should at all times and in all places give you thanks, O Lord, holy Father, almighty and everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who promised that wherever two or three come together in his name, there he is with them to shepherd his flock till he comes again in glory. Therefore, with all the saints on earth and hosts of heaven, we praise your holy name and join their glorious song: 10

HOLY, HOLY, HOLY (Sanctus) 11

WORDS OF INSTITUTION M: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night he was betrayed, took bread; and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take and eat; this is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me. Then he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink from it, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for you for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me. The peace of the Lord be with you always. CHRIST, LAMB OF GOD (Agnus Dei) 12

DISTRIBUTION HYMN O, Lord of Nations Christian Worship Supplement, 785 13

PLEASE STAND THANKSGIVING SONG OF SIMEON (Nunc Dimittis) M: O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good. 14

PRAYER O God the Father, source of all goodness, in your loving kindness you sent your Son to share our humanity. We thank you that through him you have given us pardon and peace in this sacrament. We also pray that you will not forsake us but will rule our hearts and minds by your Holy Spirit so that we willingly serve you day after day, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. BLESSING M: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look on you with favor and (+) give you peace. 15
