OFFICE OF WORSHIP NOTATIONS ON THE LITURGICAL CALENDAR for the ARCHDIOCESE OF SAINT PAUL & MINNEAPOLIS 2018 Prepared by the Office of Worship for use in the Archdiocese of Saint Paul & Minneapolis Revised August 20, 2017 777 Forest Street Saint Paul, MN 55106-3857 T: 651.251.7727 F: 651. 290.1629 www.archspm.org irwinl@archspm.org

HOLY DAYS OF OBLIGATIONS: The Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord has been permanently transferred to the following Sunday. (This year, the Ascension will be celebrated on Sunday, May 10, 2018). The other holy days of obligation are: Wednesday August 15, 2018 The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Thursday November 1, 2018 All Saints Saturday December 8, 2018 The Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary CHRISTMAS VIGIL MASSES: May not be celebrated earlier than 4:00 pm on December 24. This is a policy of the Archdiocese that was enacted in 2009. For more information go to www.archspm.org, go to the Resources tab, click on Policies tab and scroll down to the document titled Christmas Eve Times for Vigil Masses. THE EASTER VIGIL: The first Mass of Easter, the Easter Vigil, is celebrated between nightfall on Holy Saturday, March 31, 2018 and daybreak of Easter Sunday, April 1, 2018. The General Norms for the Liturgical Year and the Calendar, no 21, states: The Easter Vigil, during the holy night when Christ rose from the dead, ranks as the mother of all vigils. Keeping watch, the church awaits Christ s resurrection and celebrated it in the sacraments. Accordingly, the entire celebration of this vigil should take place at night, that is, it should either begin after nightfall or end before the dawn of Sunday. Individual parishes can check the following website to determine the time of nightfall on Saturday, March 31, 2018: http://www.usno.navy.mil/usno click on the USNO icon on the left of the page click Astronomical Applications click Data Service and go to Complete Sun and Moon Data for one day. On this website, nightfall is listed as end of civil twilight which is at 8:09 pm on March 31, 2018.

RITUAL MASSES: Ritual Masses are prohibited on the Sundays of Advent, Lent and the Easter season, on all solemnities including the days within the Octave of Easter, on the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed (All Souls), on Ash Wednesday, and during Holy Week. In addition, the norms in the ritual books or in the Masses themselves also apply (General Instruction of the Roman Missal (2011), no. 352 ff). Order of Matrimony Weekend wedding Masses are normally to be celebrated prior to any Saturday evening Masses of anticipation. For exceptional Saturday night or Sunday wedding Masses, consult the Missal for the appropriate prayers and readings. (Ritual Masses, IV, I) If the marriage is celebrated on a Sunday or solemnity, the Mass of the day is used with the nuptial blessing and the special final blessing according to the circumstances. When the wedding Mass may not be held, one of the readings from the texts provided for the marriage celebration (nos. 67-105) may be chosen, except from Holy Thursday to Easter, on the solemnities of Epiphany, Ascension, Pentecost, or the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, or on holy days of obligation. However, the Rite of Marriage outside Mass may be celebrated on the above Days except during the Easter Triduum. On the Sundays of the Christmas season and in Ordinary Time, the entire Wedding Mass may be used in Masses that are not parish Masses. If a Marriage is celebrated on a day having a penitential character, especially during Lent, the pastor is to counsel the spouses to take into account the special nature of that day. The celebration of Marriage on Friday of the Passion of the Lord and Holy Saturday is to be avoided altogether. (The Order of Celebrating Matrimony, no. 32). Funeral Masses Funeral Masses are not permitted on solemnities that are holy days of Obligation, Holy Thursday, The Easter Triduum, and the Sundays of Advent, Lent and the Easter season, (General Instruction of the Roman Missal, no. 380).
