The Resurrection of our Lord, Easter Day Is THIS the best the world can do for us as we celebrate the power of Easter in our lives? This exemplifies the heartbreak of a hollow easter bunny in the easter basket. Looks good, shiny, pleasing to the eye, but it isn t what it claims to be. You think you have been gifted with something really great. Yet it is hollow. I do not want to dig too far into the relatively pagan celebration of the Resurrection holiday so as to give it any credence. We cannot even celebrate the holiday well. Nor can the world. It offers a hollow bunny for us to consume this Easter season, with the wonderful veneer of being solid, but that first bite on those ears or that tail will certainly break your heart as a child. Unless we completely lose the celebration of the real meaning of Easter in all of the pastel colors and cute decorations, we need to be reminded that the first Easter was celebrated in a cemetery. Decaying bones surround our personal pain of the loss of our dear Lord on the Good Friday cross. It is not pretty. It is a grief filled moment we cannot get around. No amount of fancy decorations from the modern world can somehow silence man s attempt to stifle God s grace by killing the messenger. Perhaps the world wants to clean up the distastefulness of the cross. Maybe it is too distressing and we need to spin a new story. Maybe we are not willing to confront our sin to realize why Jesus had to die in the first place. Maybe we are not willing to give up control on our lives to the risen Lord. Maybe we have 1000 other excuses. Remember, Jesus was not passing out chocolate bunnies graveside. He hid no Easter eggs in the cemetery. His death and now the Empty Tomb gives new life to those who believe. Let s make certain we know exactly what we celebrate this beautiful Easter morning. Certainly not a hollow bunny! Pastor Jonathon Kosec

GATHERING AND MEDITATION TIME Pre-Service Music CONFESSIONAL PRAYER OUR WORSHIP TODAY This blessed Easter season is our celebration of the great work that Jesus had accomplish while here on earth. His care and concern for the lost, the disenfranchised, and the neglected of society points our attention to what Jesus truly felt important as He shared the good news that the Kingdom of God was made manifest in His work, His suffering, His death on the cross, and now, His resurrection. We allow too many things to distract our attention away from what Christ brought that first Easter, and all of the subsequent Easters we celebrate. For that, and for the many other times we let our Lord down, we make our confession this day. Most merciful God, we confess that we are in bondage to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by the things we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen ABSOLUTION Pastor: Almighty God, in His mercy, has given His Son to die for us, and for His sake, and by His promise, forgives us all our sin. Therefore on His behalf, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Triune God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Go and sin no more, that the rest of your life might be pure and holy and modeled after our Lord Jesus in all we say and all we do, we pray in His Holy Name, Amen HYMN 183 Jesus Christ is Risen Today 1,2,3,4 THE PRAYER OF THE DAY (Unison): God of mercy, we no longer look for Jesus among the dead, for he is alive and has become the Lord of life. Increase in our minds and hearts the risen life we share with Christ, and help us to grow as your people toward the fullness of eternal life with you, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. Alleluia. Christ, our paschal lamb, has been sacrificed. Therefore, let us keep the feast. Alleluia.

THE FIRST LESSON: Acts 10:34-43 Then Peter replied, I see very clearly that God shows no favoritism. In every nation he accepts those who fear him and do what is right. This is the message of Good News for the people of Israel that there is peace with God through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all. You know what happened throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee, after John began preaching his message of baptism. And you know that God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. Then Jesus went around doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. And we apostles are witnesses of all he did throughout Judea and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a cross, but God raised him to life on the third day. Then God allowed him to appear, not to the general public, but to us whom God had chosen in advance to be his witnesses. We were those who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. And he ordered us to preach everywhere and to testify that Jesus is the one appointed by God to be the judge of all the living and the dead. He is the one all the prophets testified about, saying that everyone who believes in him will have their sins forgiven through his name. THE SECOND LESSON: Colossians 3:1-4 Since you have been raised to new life with Christ, set your sights on the realities of heaven, where Christ sits in the place of honor at God s right hand Think about the things of heaven, not the things of earth. For you died to this life, and your real life is hidden with Christ in God. And when Christ, who is your life, is revealed to the whole world, you will share in all his glory. The Holy Gospel: Matthew 28:1-10 Early on Sunday morning, as the new day was dawning, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went out to visit the tomb. Suddenly there was a great earthquake! For an angel of the Lord came down from heaven, rolled aside the stone, and sat on it. His face shone like lightning, and his clothing was as white as snow. The guards shook with fear when they saw him, and they fell into a dead faint. Then the angel spoke to the women. Don t be afraid! he said. I know you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He isn t here! He is risen from the dead, just as he said would happen. Come, see where his body was lying. And now, go quickly and tell his

disciples that he has risen from the dead, and he is going ahead of you to Galilee. You will see him there. Remember what I have told you. The women ran quickly from the tomb. They were very frightened but also filled with great joy, and they rushed to give the disciples the angel s message. And as they went, Jesus met them and greeted them. And they ran to him, grasped his feet, and worshiped him. Then Jesus said to them, Don t be afraid! Go tell my brothers to leave for Galilee, and they will see me there. The Gospel of our Lord. PRAISE TO YOU, O CHRIST. SERMON A Hollow Bunny, Really? Pastor Jonathon Kosec SERMON HYMN: 188 Thine Be the Glory 1,2,3 OUR CONFESSION OF FAITH: The Apostles Creed (C) I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day He rose again. He ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. THE OFFERING: After the consecration of the Offering, we will sing the Doxology: Praise God, from whom all blessings flow, Praise him, all creatures here below, Praise him above, Ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.
