A NEW YEAR IN ROME! Fr. Bruce Ludeke & Fr. Jerome Koutnik Pilgrimage to Rome, Friday, January 12 Saturday, January 20, 2018 $2,950 Itinerary Day 1: Friday, January 12, 2018: Depart Chicago O Hare Airport on flight to Rome Fiumicino Airport. The flight will have a brief layover through a major European City. Everyone is responsible for arriving at the airport on their own unless a bus is organized from the parish to O Hare. Day 2: Saturday, Jan. 13 th : Flight arrives in Rome in the morning hours. After going through customs and immigration, a professional guide and a comfortable coach bus will meet the group and head straight to the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls for a tour of this vast Basilica, where the remains of St. Paul the Apostle repose. The bus will then drop the group off directly in front of its hotel near St. Peter s Basilica. After a two hour break to get settled and refreshed the professional guide will lead the group to St. Peter s Basilica, the largest Church in the world. The goal of every pilgrimage to Rome is to pray at the tomb of the prince of the apostles, our first pope, as so many generations have done before us. The tour of this immense Basilica includes seeing Michelangelo s Pietá, praying at the tomb of Popes St. John Paull II and St. John XXIII, and absorbing the overwhelming beauty of every side altar, mosaic, and statue. After St. Peter s, your guide will lead you through the streets of Rome to see Castel Santangelo, Piazza Novona, the Church of San Luigi Francese and its paintings by Caravaggio, and the Pantheon. On the walk back to the hotel the group will enjoy a traditional Italian meal at a restaurant near the hotel.

Day 3: Sunday, Jan. 14 th : Breakfast at the hotel. Walk as a group to St. Peter s Basilica to give this structure its highest purpose praise and worship of God. The group will attend the concelebrated, multi lingual, 10:30 a.m. Mass at the altar of the Chair. The Angelus in St. Peter s Square with Pope Francis will follow at 12 noon. The group will then eat lunch together at a nice restaurant near St. Peter s. After lunch there will be free time for shopping in the many stores near the Vatican, to return to St. Peter s Basilica on your own, or to climb to the Cupola of the Basilica for some of the most amazing views in Rome. In the evening the group may attend solemn vespers at the North American College near the Vatican and/or have free time as the eternal city observes its Sunday rest. Dinner on your own. Day 4: Monday, Jan. 15 th : Breakfast at the hotel. Take the coach bus from the hotel to the Basilica of St. Mary Major for Mass in one of the beautiful side chapels. Your guide will provide a detailed tour of this ancient Basilica after the Mass. The group will then take a short walk to the nearby ancient minor Basilicas of St. Prassede and St. Pudenziana to see some of the oldest mosaics in Rome. The group will then walk to the Church of Saint Peter in Chains to see Michelangelo s sculpture of Moses and the very chains which tradition says held St. Peter bound in Rome. A group lunch will follow. The group will then have a guided tour of the incredible Colosseum and the Roman Forum. The forum was the center of daily life and business in Rome and the administrative center of the entire Roman Empire. After the forum and a full day of sightseeing, the pilgrims will be brought back to the hotel in their private coach bus. The evening will be free with dinner on your own. Day 5: Tuesday, Jan. 16 th : A day trip to Assisi. The bus will leave at about 8 a.m. for the approximately two and a half hour drive to Assisi. The group will begin its guided tour in the lower town at the church of Santa Maria degli Angeli, which played a significant role in St. Francis life. The bus will then take the group to the upper town for a guided tour of the extraordinary Basilica of St. Francis, full of artistically important frescos by the master Giotto. There will be a private Mass for the group in one of the Basilica s side chapels. Lunch on your own. After lunch the professional guide will lead the group on a visit to the Basilica of St. Clare, the family home of St. Francis, and other historic sites in Assisi. There will also be time for shopping in this historic and enchanting hill town. Depart for Rome at approximately 6 p.m. Dinner on your own.

Day 6: Wednesday, Jan. 17 th : Breakfast at the hotel. Leave the hotel by 8:30 to attend the Papal Audience in St. Peter s Square at 10:00. After the audience the group will take a walking tour of the Trastevere neighborhood, including Mass in, and a guided tour of, one of the most ancient churches dedicated to Mary in Rome Santa Maria in Trastevere. Lunch on your own. After lunch your guide will lead you on a walking tour of some of the most significant and beautiful churches in the heart of the eternal city: Il Gesù, where St. Ignatius of Loyola is buried, San Andrea della Valle, San Lorenzo in Damaso, and Chiesa Nouva. Dinner on your own. Day 7: Thursday, Jan. 18 th : Breakfast at the hotel. A coach bus will take the group to the catacombs on the Appian Way for a guided visit, including Mass in a Church at the entrance of the catacombs. Lunch together near the Catacombs. After lunch the bus will transport the group to the town of Anzio, about forty minutes south of Rome on the Mediterranean. In Anzio is found the stunning American military cemetery where almost 9,000 American soldiers rest in peace beneath white marble crosses. These Americans died liberating Italy. After a visit to the cemetery and its museum, the coach will take the group to the nearby church of Saint Maria Goretti, where the remains of this child saint rest beneath the altar in the crypt. The bus will then transport the group back to its hotel. Dinner as a group at the hotel in the evening. Day 8: Friday, Jan. 19th: Breakfast at the hotel. Walk to the Vatican early for a private Mass in a chapel in the papal crypts beneath the Basilica. A guided tour of the Vatican Gardens will follow. At the conclusion of this approximately one hour tour the group will enter directly into the Vatican Museums for a guided tour of one of the greatest museums in the world and the storehouse of many of the world s most stunning artistic masterpieces. This tour includes the Sistine Chapel. After lunch on your own the group will be divided into smaller groups of fifteen for guided tours of the Scavi excavations under St. Peter Basilica. The Scavi necropolis houses the tomb of St. Peter himself and is one of the most sought after tours in Rome. If the Scavi tour is not available, it will be replaced by another activity. After this long day of touring the group will return to the hotel. The last evening in Rome is largely free but will include a final group dinner. Day 9: Saturday, Jan. 20th: Departure from the hotel early to make check-in on a flight to Chicago. Arrive at O Hare in the afternoon.

Questions and Answers How much does the trip cost? The cost is $2,950 U.S. dollars per person if paid by check or cash. This cost presupposes double occupancy. A single room supplement will increase the cost of the trip by $300. Single rooms should be requested as soon as possible. Triple rooms are also available. When is payment due? A deposit of $1,000 per person is due to confirm registration. The final trip payment must be received by Friday, December 8, 2017 at 5:00 p.m. Please make checks payable to Finis Terra Tours Ltd. and send checks to PO Box 31551, Chicago IL, 60631-0551. Please do not send your check via certified mail. Regular First Class mail is sufficient. Can I pay with a credit card? Finis Terra Tours Ltd. cannot directly process a credit card payment over the phone or online. A pilgrim can, however, use a credit card through Paypal. Using Paypal will add 2.9% to the cost of the trip. Paypal also allows payments directly from bank accounts. What does the cost include? Round trip flight Chicago - Rome, all airline taxes and fuel surcharges, bus transfer to and from airport to hotel, coach bus to and from Assisi, to and from Anzio, and per itinerary for trips inside Rome; clean, private bath, 3 star or better hotel room; all museum entrance fees; audio headsets; all guides; tips; six breakfasts; three lunches; and two dinners per itinerary. What does the cost not include? City occupancy taxes levied per person (not per room) per night for hotel stays in Rome. These taxes will total approximately 40 Euros per person for the entire trip. The tax must be paid upon hotel departure by each guest, along with any incidental costs such as mini bar, room service, or laundry. Also not covered: meals not specified in the itinerary, taxi fares, any museum visits not on the itinerary, items of a personal nature, personal gratuities for the priests, and the carrying of luggage from the airport baggage claim area to the bus, and to and from the bus to the hotel. Although most transport on the pilgrimage will be by bus, we recommend bringing about $40 - $50 for taxis and always sharing taxi rides. If the exchange rate of the Eurodollar to the U.S. dollar increases by more than 20% from November 10, 2017 to January 10, 2018, a surcharge may be added to the cost of the trip. Such an increase is unlikely and would be no more than $75. What is the cancellation policy? All cancellations must be made in writing by the same person(s) who registered for the trip. The following penalties are applicable: From November 1 st to December 8, 2017 $900 is non-refundable, but transferable to a person replacing the person cancelling, for the same tour and dates.

As of December 9, 2017 100% of the tour price is non-refundable and non-transferable per person. Is there a registration form? There is no registration form. Finis Terra tries to make registration as easy as possible. To register for the trip send an e-mail to finisterratoursltd@gmail.com with the name, address, phone, and e-mail for each pilgrim who would like to go. Please indicate the parents or legal guardians of minor travelers. You will be officially notified of your registration via e-mail the day your check is deposited. After sending your check please allow 10 business days for us to confirm your registration via e-mail. Do I need a passport? Yes, you will need a passport to travel to Italy. Passports are required for everyone, even children and infants. The expiration date of the passport must be beyond six months after the date of re-entry into the U.S. A copy of the ID page of that passport must be received by Finis Terra Tours Ltd. at PO Box 31551, Chicago IL, 60631-0551 prior to the final payment registration and payment deadline of December 8, 2017. Or scan the passport and send it to finisterrratoursltd@gmail.com. The copy of the passport and its information will be shared with no one. All documentary or digital traces of the copy of the passport will be destroyed at the conclusion of the tour. Please consult the official website of the U.S. State Department for further information. Do I need to obtain a visa? U.S. citizens do not need a visa to enter Italy for fewer than 90 days. Non U.S. citizens must verify with an Italian consulate if they need a visa to enter Italy, and with the U.S. State Department regarding their ability to re-enter the U.S. Is there any chance the trip would be cancelled? In the remote possibility that the trip is cancelled due to a lack of sufficient numbers, the entire cost of the trip will be reimbursed. An extraordinary event such as an airline strike, weather event, act of God (e.g. an earthquake) or international incident will not necessarily cause the trip to be cancelled. Trip insurance would provide total protection against such unlikely eventualities. I d like to go, but I don t have a roommate to share the cost. What can I do? You can either pay the single occupancy supplement of $300 or be willing to be assigned a roommate if one is available. That will depend, of course, on the number of solo travelers of the same sex, but Finis Terra will keep track of who needs roommates and coordinate as needed. If a roommate is available but is refused, the traveler will be required to pay the single supplement. And if no roommate can be found for a single traveler, the single supplement must also be paid. If non spouses or non family members would like to share a room with another pilgrim they must each communicate said intent to Finis Terra in an e-mail. Finis Terra will not place non sacramentally married, non family members of the opposite sex in the same hotel room.

Can I reserve a place even though I have not paid in full? You can reserve your place on the trip by making a deposit of $1,000, or by paying the full amount. The balance must be received by Friday, December 8, 2017. What about travel insurance? Finis Terra Tours Ltd. does not offer travel insurance. But for the protection of our pilgrims we recommend they purchase travel insurance. Information is readily available online. Recommendations can be e-mailed once a deposit is made. These recommendations are not an endorsement of any company but only the result of prior travelers experiences. Every pilgrim must either provide Finis Terra proof of the purchase of insurance or sign the bottom portion of the general waiver. The bottom portion indicates someone declining to purchase travel insurance. Why would I want travel insurance? Insurance is a good idea for those who have an unpredictable medical condition and for those who have a family member whose ill health, or even death, may preclude going on the pilgrimage. Travel insurance must normally be purchased shortly after registering for the trip. It normally cannot be purchased close to the date of departure, or it may be priced exorbitantly. Can I use airline miles or points? As of November 1, 2017 pilgrims not flying with the group can register for the trip. Finis Terra prefers that all pilgrims fly together both to and from their destination and arrive at, and leave from, their hotel together. Our experience is that solo travelers require special transport and communication needs, miss meals and tours, and otherwise compromise the quality of the trip for themselves and others. Nonetheless, Finis Terra will allow experienced travelers to purchase their own airline tickets, or to use airline miles or points, after November 1, 2017. To find out the cost of the ground portion of the trip contact Finis Terra on November 1 st or later. Solo pilgrims may miss visiting the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls, will be responsible for arriving at the hotel on their own, and must initiate contact with the group leaders at the hotel. Where can I exchange U.S. dollars for Eurodollars? Talk to your local bank to see if they offer that service. Otherwise you can change money at O Hare airport or in Rome. ATM machines in Italy also accept Visa and Mastercard credit cards and dispense Eurodollars. To use a credit card at an ATM in Italy will require a PIN. Almost all American banks charge a fixed fee for foreign ATM withdrawals and/or a percentage of the amount withdrawn. ATM s in Italy will normally not accept debit cards from regional banks. How many people can go on this trip? The limit is 50 people. What about travelers with special needs? Any pilgrim with special needs or dietary restrictions must inform Finis Terra at the time of registration. There will be

considerable walking on the tour so being physically able to stand for long periods and to walk long distances is presumed upon registering. A physically capable companion must accompany travelers who need assistance. Coach buses are not equipped with ramps, so all travelers must be able to mount steps into a bus. European buildings are also less handicap accessible than American buildings. Can anyone go on the trip? Although this will be a Catholic focused pilgrimage, non Catholics are welcome to come. Minors are welcome provided they travel with family. In order to ensure a rewarding, positive, and faith filled experience for all pilgrims, Finis Terra reserves the right to reject any guest, either before or during the trip, whose comportment contradicts or is otherwise harmful to the interests of the group. Will there be a pre-trip meeting? There will be a non-mandatory pre-trip meeting with the date and time to be determined. At that meeting there will be a discussion about the possibility of group transport from the parish to O Hare and back. What if I have more questions? Most questions about this pilgrimage can be answered through this information sheet or by contacting your pastor. If Father Ludeke or Fr. Koutnik cannot answer your questions, please e-mail finisterratoursltd@gmail.com.
