OFFICE OF THE BISHOP To: All Priests and Deacons From: Bishop Nickless Date: 29 August 2017 Re: Hurricane Irma Relief Collection Dear brothers, As you are aware, Hurricane Harvey s destruction in Texas and Louisiana has now been followed by Hurricane Irma s trek through the Caribbean, Florida, and Southeast states. Once again, the damage is extensive, especially in such places as the US Virgin Islands and the Florida Keys. It would again be most charitable for us to offer our assistance to those affected. Following Cardinal DiNardo s request to all bishops, a collection will therefore be taken up at all Sunday Masses, including vigil Masses, on September 23-24. It is my understanding that this collection will be shared between Catholic Charities USA (and distributed in the US dioceses affected by the storm through those Catholic Charities offices), and CRS (for relief and rebuilding programs in non-us dioceses and locations). Please note this in your bulletins, announcements, and other forms of communicating with your parishioners in the coming week. My letter to parishioners in support of this collection is attached, requesting their prayers and donations. Donations may also be made directly to Catholic Charities or to CRS at their websites, www.catholiccharitiesusa.org, and www.crs.org. For Sioux City area parishes taking the Holy Spirit collection on Sept 23-24, you may choose either to hold both collections on the same day, or to postpone the Irma collection to the following weekend. Please remit your collections to the Diocese in the usual way, and no later than October 6, so that we can forward our contribution all together in a timely way. Once again, many thanks for all your prayers and support for those affected by this latest natural disaster. My continuing prayers and blessings on all your ministry. DIOCESE OF SIOUX CITY 1821 JACKSON STREET SIOUX CITY, IOWA 51105 (712) 233-7555 FAX: (712) 233-7557

15 September 2017 OFFICE OF THE BISHOP Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, Following the damage and extensive flooding wrought in Texas and Louisiana by Hurricane Harvey three weeks ago, the even stronger Hurricane Irma has now struck the Caribbean and Florida, and produced heavy rain and flooding throughout the Southeast. Praise God that, once again, notice of the storm and good planning saved many thousands of lives. But damage to homes and other buildings in many areas is scarcely believable. On some Caribbean islands exposed to Irma at its strongest, there is hardly a building left standing. In the Florida Keys, 90% of homes sustained damage, including 25% destroyed outright. Irma s wake is littered with great human need. Accordingly, I and all my brother bishops throughout the country are asking again for your assistance. Cardinal DiNardo writes, I am aware that this call comes on the heels of the emergency collection for Hurricane Harvey... Likewise, Hurricane Irma has been devastating, and our brothers and sisters in the Caribbean, especially the Diocese of St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands, and the southern US need our help. The Church is a channel for grace and solidarity in the wake of natural disasters, as it offers solace and support in their aftermath. However, as is so often the case, the Church itself in these regions... is now in need of tremendous assistance itself. So many of the Church s structures have been damaged and their resources depleted, which makes it even more challenging to provide assistance and pastoral outreach to those in need. In that spirit of solidarity, I ask you especially to pray fervently for all those affected by this second severe hurricane. And if you are able, please give further charitable aid through the special collection for Irma assistance in your parish, or directly to Catholic Charities (for immediate relief and rebuilding in US dioceses) or to CRS (for aid to non-us dioceses and locations) at their websites, www.catholiccharitiesusa.org, and www.crs.org. Please be as generous as you can. May God reward you for your charity, and may He hear and grant all our prayers for those harmed by Hurricane Irma. Your brother in Christ, Most Reverend R. Walker Nickless Bishop of Sioux City

Office of Human Resources To: Priests in Active Ministry From: Margaret Fuentes Director, Human Resources RE: Flu Shot Clinic at Priests Convocation in October Date: September 19, 2017 I am happy to announce that in conjunction with the Priests Convocation in October, we have arranged to have an on-site flu shot clinic. Dickinson County Public Health Department will have two nurses at Arrowhead Resort during the lunch break on Tuesday, October 17 th to administer this vaccination for those that choose to participate. The cost will be covered by the Priest Health Insurance Fund. Please keep in mind that the medical staff prefer to administer the shot in the upper arm, so clothing that accommodates access to your arm will be very helpful. If you have any questions prior to the Convocation, please let me know. I will also be on-site that day to assist and be available for questions. Thank you & stay healthy! Diocese of Sioux City AMDG Memo To: All Priests From: Fr. Shane Deman, Vocation Director Vocations Retreat for Hispanic Families On Saturday, October 14, the Vocations Office and the Cathedral Parish will sponsor a family-focused retreat for Hispanics on the topic of vocations. The retreat is scheduled from 3:00-8:00 pm at the Cathedral. It will include talks given by priests and religious, a Holy Hour for Vocations, Saturday evening Mass, and then a meal. Young Hispanics know that their career goals and vocational discernment are often linked to their personal family situation. Thus the goal of this retreat is to help Hispanic families better understand their general vocation to holiness, but also the possibility that the Lord might be calling their son or daughter to pursue a religious vocation. Hopefully in knowing the needs of the local Church and what possibilities are available for seminary studies and religious formation, young Hispanics as well as their parents and grandparents will consider such vocations more deeply. Please encourage your Hispanic families to consider attending this mini-retreat. Should you have any questions, do not hesitate to let me or Fr. Lingle know. Below is a flyer that can be advertised throughout your parish/school.
