Key Passage: 1 Samuel 3:10B 3:45 4:00 CHECK IN / SNACKS / GAMES: One teacher take control of sign-in: One tag will go on the child, another will go on the clipboard, and one will be used for checkout. Just place the Pick Up sticker on the clipboard to check the child out. If someone is new to the church or not in our database they can fill out a guest tag. One teacher lead orderly free play. 4:00 4:10 ACTIVITY SHEET / ARRIVING ACTIVITY: Activity Sheet: Distribute activity pages and instruct the kids to complete the challenge. (On the back of the coloring sheet) Arriving ACTIVITY: Option 1: Who called you? Choose a volunteer to sit in a chair with her back to the rest of the class and close her eyes. Silently point to another kid to call out the volunteer s name twice. The volunteer must guess who called her name. If she is correct, the person who called her name will be the new volunteer. If she guesses incorrectly, he must call out her name again. Play as time allows, giving each kid a chance to call out a name or guess who said it. Say: In our Bible story today, a young boy named Samuel heard someone calling his name. He thought it was Eli the priest, but it was actually someone else. We will find out more in the Bible story. 4:10 4:15 CLEAN UP / GO OVER RULES & CONSEQUENCES: Rules are on the wall by the door 4:15 4:50 KIDS LIVE: Have the kids sit together. 5:10 5:20 REVIEW & APPLICATION QUESTIONS 4pm: 1 st 4 th Grade Classroom Schedule Review Questions: Family Feud Style Game (Items Needed: Buzzer) Divide the group into two teams and have one person from each team come to Check-In desk with the buzzer on it. Tell them to put their hands behind their back until you ask the question. The first person to hit the buzzer gets to answer the question. Award team 10 points if the person answers correctly, if incorrect then the other team can steal the points. Pick new people each question. Why was Hannah sad? (She did not have any children.) What did Hannah promise to do if God gave her a son? (give him to God to serve Him) Who called out to Samuel? (God) What did Samuel say to God? (Speak, for Your servant is listening.) What did God tell Samuel? (God was going to punish Eli s family for disobeying Him.) Say: We can listen to God and obey. Discussion Questions: Small Group Time The Goal is to get them talking about the lesson. Split the room up into 2 groups and each leader ask the questions giving time for a few kids to answer. 1. What did you learn about God from today s story? 2. What did you learn about people/yourself? 3. What is one thing you learned from this lesson that you can apply this week? Say: We can listen to God and obey. 5:20 5:25 UNIT MEMORY VERSE: Review with the entire group. *Use the Memory Verse sheet located in the teacher aid section of the bin. 5:25 ENDING ACTIVITY / PARENT ARRIVAL: As the parents arrive Ending Activity: Play the telephone game Invite the kids to sit in a circle. If the message is incorrect, say, Listen again, and repeat the sentence into the ear of the first kid. Continue playing as time allows. Say: In today s Bible story, God gave Samuel an important message to give to Eli. Samuel listened to God and obeyed. We can listen to God and obey. Gospel Project Unit 9.6

MAIN POINT: GOD CALLED SAMUEL TO SHARE GOD S PLAN. Eli and Boy Samuel 1 Samuel 1 3 26

Write a few sentences as a prayer to God, asking Him for something you desire. Eli and Boy Samuel 1 Samuel 1 3 FOLD MAIN POINT: GOD CALLED SAMUEL TO SHARE GOD S PLAN. FAMILY DISCUSSION STARTERS Does God always give us everything we desire? Why or why not? What did Hannah promise God? (See 1 Samuel 1:9-11.) Are you willing to listen for God and tell others about Him? A man named Elkanah lived with his wife Hannah. Hannah was very sad because she did not have any children. Every year, Elkanah went to the tabernacle to make sacrifices to God and to worship Him. Hannah went with him. Hannah prayed to God, Lord, if You give me a son, I will dedicate him to You. He will serve You all of his life. A priest named Eli was sitting near the doorpost of the tabernacle. Eli watched Hannah pray. Eli thought there was something wrong with Hannah. Hannah explained, I ve been pouring out my heart before the Lord. Eli replied, Go in peace. May God answer your prayers. God did answer her prayers. After some time, Hannah gave birth to a son. She named him Samuel. When Samuel was no longer a baby, Hannah took him to Eli at the tabernacle. Hannah returned home and left Samuel with Eli to serve God. Samuel grew older and found favor with God and with men. One night, Eli was in his bed and Samuel was lying in the tabernacle when Samuel heard someone speak to him. Here I am, Samuel replied. He ran to Eli. Here I am; you called me. God called Samuel three times, and each time Samuel ran to Eli. Here I am, he said. Eli finally understood that God was calling to Samuel. He told Samuel how to respond. Samuel went back to his place, and God called, Samuel, Samuel! Speak, for Your servant is listening, Samuel replied. God told Samuel that He was going to judge Eli s family for their sin. The next day, Samuel was afraid to tell Eli what God had said. Eli asked Samuel to tell him what God said, so Samuel did. As Samuel grew, God was with him. God used Samuel to share His plan with the nation of Israel. Christ Connection: Samuel used God s words to tell the people what God is like. John 1:1 says that Jesus is the Word. Jesus showed the world what God is like, and He told people to turn away from their sin. Jesus ultimately freed people from the power of sin by dying on the cross and rising again. 25

Who Said That? Speak, for Your servant is listening. (1 Samuel 3:10) Match each saying to the person who said it. Look up the Scripture references in your Bible to check your answers! We must go up and take possession of the land because we can certainly conquer it! (Numbers 13:30) Am I my brother s guardian? (Genesis 4:9) You planned evil against me; God planned it for good. (Genesis 50:20) Who is Yahweh that I should obey Him? (Exodus 5:2) How Does He Do It? Copy the words from the puzzle pieces into their correct places. Complete the puzzle to answer the big picture question: How does God accomplish His plan? 26

Memory Verse: 1 Samuel 3:10B Lesson: Go over Classroom Rules: Play the Intro-Video Timeline View: Have you ever wanted something really, really badly? In our Bible story today, a woman named Hannah wanted a baby. Hannah wanted a baby so badly that she cried and would not eat. Hannah prayed and told God how she felt. We will hear how God answered Hannah s prayer in today s Bible story. Main Point: That leads us to our main point: We can listen to God and obey. Show the MainPoint Everyone say that with me (Have them repeat the MAIN Point) Very interesting! Let s take a look at how he did this! Bible Story: Play the Bible Story Video: Hannah wanted a baby boy, so she prayed. God heard her prayers and gave her a son, Samuel. God gave Samuel a special job. God spoke to Samuel and told Him what He was going to do. God chose Samuel to be His messenger to God s people, Israel. Show MainPoint (Have them repeat the MAIN Point!) Application: Let s watch our discussion starter video and see what it might have to do with our story. Play the Discussion Starter Video: Hannah wanted a son very badly. The amazing thing is that Hannah promised God that if He gave her a son, she would give him right back to God! God answered her prayer, and God gave her a son. Hannah named her son Samuel, and she kept her promise to give Samuel to the Lord. Hannah took Samuel to the tabernacle and left him there under Eli s care. Can you imagine how exciting it must have been for Samuel to hear God s voice? At first, Samuel thought he heard Eli calling his name. At this time in the Bible story, there were not many prophets who received messages from God. But even though Samuel was young, God called Samuel to share God s plan Unit Memory Verse: Isn t it amazing how God worked out His plan to take care of Ruth and Naomi? God showed that He will save those who trust in Him.
